Aerial gamma ray and magnetic survey: Mississippi and Florida airborne survey, Fort Smith quadrangle, Oklahoma, and Arkansas. Final report

Description: The Fort Smith quadrangle in western Arkansas and eastern Oklahoma overlies thick Paleozoic sediments of the Arkoma Basin. These Paleozoics dominate surface exposure except where covered by Quaternary Alluvial materials. Examination of available literature shows no known uranium deposits (or occurrences) within the quadrangle. Seventy-five groups of uranium samples were defined as anomalies and are discussed briefly. Potential for efficient frequency conversion at high average power using solid state nonlinear optical materials

Description: High-average-power frequency conversion using solid state nonlinear materials is discussed. Recent laboratory experience and new developments in design concepts show that current technology, a few tens of watts, may be extended by several orders of magnitude. Phosphate-bonded glass cements for geothermal wells. Final report

Description: Calcium aluminosilicate glasses were found to react with phosphoric acid in three ways depending upon silica content. Above 55% SiO/sub 2/ they are insoluble while below 50% they dissolve readily. The transition compositions release calcium and aluminum ions and a silica gel phase replaces the glass. X-ray measurements of stresses and defects in EFG and large grained polycrystalline silicon ribbons. First quarterly report

Description: The first model of a modified Bond goniometer has been built and tested for the precision measurement of interplanar spacings in Si-single crystals. A change in interplanar spacing ..delta..d/d approximately = to +- 10/sup -5/ can be detected which corresponds to surface stresses of the order of +- 1000 psi. A second version of the goniometer is being assembled incorporating a removable microscope for precision alignment of the Si-strip into the primary X-ray beam.

Biological Production of Ethanol From Coal

Description: The fermentation pH has been observed to be the key parameter affecting the ratio of ethanol to acetate produced by Clostridium ljungdahlii. The effects of controlled pH on cell growth and product formation by C. ljungdahlii were measured. It was found that cell concentration and acetate concentration increased with pH, while the ethanol concentration was highest at the lower pH.
