Cryopump, neutral-beam compatibility test

Description: The design and performance testing plan for a cryopump to be used on the TFTR neutral beams injectors are briefly discussed. The cryopump consists of an outer envelope at liquid nitrogen temperature, and an inner envelope at liquid helium temperature. In the cryopanel-chevron structure to be tested, a deuterium condensation rate of 2.5 x 10/sup 4/ liters/s is predicted. A three phase test plan for performance testing at both LBL and LLL is delineated. (RME)

Bolometer for measurements on high-temperature plasmas

Description: A bolometer has been developed, based on a thin, die-cut platinum grid. It can survive high temperatures and the neutron and gamma radiation expected in the Toroidal Fusion Test Factor (TFTR). The platinum resistance is measured with a square-wave carrier system to minimize sensitivity to ambient electromagnetic interference. Electrical power fed back to the sensor holds its temperature constant and provides an output directly proportional to absorbed radiation power. With a bandwidth of 50 Hz … more

Meson and baryon correlation studies using the PEP-TPC/2. gamma. Facility

Description: Results on vector meson, and strange and charmed-baryon production are presented for data taken during the period 1982--1986 using the TPC/2{gamma} detector at PEP. Vector mesons ({rho}{sup 0}, K{sup *} and {phi}) with 0, 1 and 2 strange quarks are used to obtain redundant measures of strange-quark suppression and of the vector to pseudoscalar ratio in hadronization. Measurements of the production rates of {Lambda}, {Xi}{sup {minus}}, {Omega} and {Xi}{sup *0} hyperons and for the {Lambda}{sub c… more

Laser-generated shock-wave experiments in metals above 1 TPa

Description: Some initial experiments are described which form part of a new program aimed at significantly extending the range of high pressures and densities which may be explored in laboratory equation-of-state (EOS) experiments. These experiments will utilize high-energy lasers, such as those employed in the Laser Fusion Program at Lawrence Livermore Laboratory (LLL), to generate intense shock waves in materials of interest.

Correlation and spectral measurements of fluctuating pressures and velocities in annular turbulent flow. [PWR; BWR]

Description: An experimental study of the fluctuating velocity field, the fluctuating static wall pressure and the in-stream fluctuating static pressure in an annular turbulent air flow system with a radius ratio of 4.314 has been conducted. The study included direct measurements of the mean velocity profile, turbulent velocity field; fluctuating static wall pressure and in-stream fluctuating static pressure from which the statistical values of the turbulent intensity levels, power spectral densities of the… more

Third quarterly report on Development of processes for the production of solar grade silicon from halides and alkali metals, April 1-June 30, 1980

Description: This program is directed toward the development of processes involving high temperature reactions of silicon halides with alkali metals for the production of solar grade silicon in volume at low cost. Experiments are performed to evaluate product separation and collection processes, measure heat release parameters for scaling purposes, determine the effects of reactants and/or products on materials of reactor construction, and make preliminary engineering and economic analyses of a scaled-up pr… more

NMR measurements in SSC dipole D00001

Description: The first 16.5 m long SSC dipole magnet (D00001) had its field intensity measured as a function of position with a custom made NMR magnetometer. A short description of the probe is presented. The data obtained (most of it near 2 T spaced apart by one inch) shows an average transfer function of 1.02830 T/KA with position dependent values deviating from the average by up to .00130 T/KA revealing contruction inhomogeneities that were measured with a sensitivity of 25 ppM.

Chiral Lagrangians and the SSC

Description: In the event that the SSC does not observe any resonances such as a Higgs boson or a techni-rho meson, we would like to know if the SSC can still discover something about the nature of the electroweak symmetry breaking. We will use chiral Lagrangian techniques to address this question and analyze their utility for studying events containing W and Z gauge bosons at the SSC. 20 refs., 4 figs.

Measurement of soil properties in-situ. Present methods: their applicability and potential

Description: The measurement of soil properties in-situ offers the advantages of minimal disturbance, retention of the in-situ state of stress, temperature, chemical, and biological environments, and cost effectiveness relative to many types of laboratory tests for evaluation of undisturbed soil properties. This report is concerned with techniques for in-situ measurement of permeability, strength, stress-deformation properties, and volume change properties; property classes which are of interest in most geo… more

Cross sections for the Cu(n,xn) and Cu(n,x. gamma. ) reactions between 1 and 20 MeV

Description: Differential cross sections for the production of secondary neutrons and gamma rays from neutron interactions in natural copper have been measured at 130/sup 0/ (lab) for incident neutron energies in the range 1 to 20 MeV. An electron linac was used as a pulsed, white neutron source. Incident neutron energies were determined using time-of-flight techniques for a source-to-sample distance of 48 m. Secondary spectra were determined by unfolding the pulse-height distributions observed in a NE-213 … more

Immobilization of radioactive waste in glass matrices

Description: A promising process for long-term management of high-level radioactive waste is to immobilize the waste in a borosilicate glass matrix. Among the most important criteria characterizing the integrity of the large-scale glass-waste forms are that they possess good chemical stability (including low leachability), thermal stability, mechanical integrity, and high radiation stability. Fulfillment of these criteria ensures the maximum margin of safety of glass-waste products, following solidification… more

Development of process evaluation of improved Fischer-Tropsch slurry catalysts

Description: The objective of this contract is to develop a consistent technical data base on the use of iron-based catalysts in Fischer-Tropsch (FT) synthesis reactions. This data base will be developed to allow the unambiguous comparison of the performance of these catalysts with each other and with state-of-the-art iron catalyst compositions. Particular attention will be devoted to generating reproducible kinetic and selectivity data and to developing reproducible improved catalyst compositions.

Reactor Materials Study. Research and Development of Metal Hydrides. Quarterly Report No. 4 for July 1, 1959 to September 30, 1959

Description: Activities during the period were directed primarily toward determination of the engineering properties of hydrided materials. The tensile strength and elongation, thermal expansion, thermal conductivity, and heat capacity of ZrH were determined as functions of temperature and H content. Preliminary results of Ti-base material studies indicate that these materials can be used for shielding and structural materials with the incorporation of rare earth hydrides. A summary of the work from Oct. l9… more

Fast neutron gauging feasibility study. Final report

Description: A study was conducted to determine the ability of a collimated neutron beam to locate defects in polyurethane foam encapsulated between sintered-iron and stainless-steel jackets. Test results indicate that although a source can be used, an iron-filtered neutron beam provides the greatest sensitivity. Voids having a diameter of 0.2 cm, an effective area of 1 cm/sup 2/, and a volume of 0.14 cm/sup 3/ were successfully detected.
