Alloying and heat treatment optimization of Fe/Cr/C steels for improved mechanical properties

Description: The effects of alloying elements and heat treatments on the microstructural changes and strength-toughness properties were investigated in optimization of vacuum melted Fe/Cr/C base steels. The structure of the steels in the as-quenched conditions consisted of highly dislocated autotempered lath martensite (strong phase) and thin continuous interlath films of retained austenite (tough phase). It has been emphasized again that the mechanical properties of the steels are sensitive to the amount a… more

Assembly, operation and disassembly manual for the Battelle Large Volume Water Sampler (BLVWS)

Description: Assembly, operation and disassembly of the Battelle Large Volume Water Sampler (BLVWS) are described in detail. Step by step instructions of assembly, general operation and disassembly are provided to allow an operator completely unfamiliar with the sampler to successfully apply the BLVWS to his research sampling needs. The sampler permits concentration of both particulate and dissolved radionuclides from large volumes of ocean and fresh water. The water sample passes through a filtration secti… more

High power, high frequency lasertron rf sources

Description: High power rf sources have historically been limited to frequencies at which intense electron beams could be efficiently modulated. We have been exploring the power, frequency and efficiency limitations associated with the use of lasertrons for generating modulated beams and using these beams as high power microwave sources. This effort is an extension of wake field accelerator development, and will proceed as part of the Argonne Wakefield Accelerator construction and use. In the lasertron the … more

Resonance production in two-photon interactions

Description: Resonance production in two-photon interactions is studied using data collected with the ASP detector at the PEP e/sup +/e/sup /minus// storage ring located at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center. The ASP detector is a non-magnetic lead-glass calorimeter constructed from 632 lead-glass bars. It covers 94% of 4..pi.. in solid angle, extending to within 20/degree/ of the beamline. Lead-scintillator calorimeters extend the coverage to within 21 mr of the beamline on both sides. Energy resolutio… more

Impact of an apparent radiation embrittlement rate on the life expectancy of PWR (pressurized-water-reactor) vessel supports

Description: Recent data from the HFIR vessel surveillance program indicate a substantial radiation embrittlement rate effect at low irradiation temperatures (/approximately/120/degree/F) for A212-B, A350-LF3, A105-II and corresponding welds. PWR vessel supports are fabricated of similar materials and are subjected to the same low temperatures and fast neutron fluxes (10/sup 8/ /minus/ 10/sup 9/ n/cm/sup 2//center dot/s, E > 1.0 MeV) as those in the HFIR vessel. Thus, the embrittlement rate of these structu… more

One-dimensional model for transient boilup of volume-heated pools for LMFBR transition phase analysis

Description: An analytical model is presented which describes the transient dispersion characteristics of fuel-steel boiling pool systems under decay heating conditions, with boundary heat losses. The spatial distribution of steel vapor (void fraction) and molten fluid is computed, together with the pressure--temperature histories of boiling pool systems. Local heat losses and sensible heating are included in the model for the vapor generation rate in the material balance equations. Model calculations are p… more

Cascade Inertial-Confinement-Fusion Power Plant

Description: The Cascade reactor is double-cone shaped with a maximum radius of 5 m. It rotates at 50 rpm. The average temperature of a three-material flowing granular blanket leaving the reactor is 1440 K. Heat from the blanket is transferred to helium gas in a shell- and ceramic-tube-type heat exchanger that has a separate region for each blanket material. Diffusion of tritium from the blanket granules through the heat exchanger is only 25 Ci/d, so no intermediate loop is needed for isolation. We selected… more

Turbulent sweeping flow mixing model for wire wrapped LMFBR assemblies

Description: A physical model is proposed to derive the sweeping flow for LMFBR triangular array wire-wrapped assemblies under the turbulent flow condition. Two correlations are suggested for the sweeping flow through two different types of gaps between subchannels, the gap between the interior subchannels and the gap between the wall subchannels. These two sweeping flow correlations are evolved by calibrating the constants in the proposed model against the available experimental data. Agreement between the… more

The cask system will consist of the heavily shielded cask, the cask transport vehicle (truck trailer or railcar), and any associated ancillary equipment (covers, impact limiters, lifting devices, etc.). The cask and certain parts of the cask system must be operated within the limits imposed by a … more

Linearization algorithms for line transfer

Description: Complete linearization is a very powerful technique for solving multi-line transfer problems that can be used efficiently with a variety of transfer formalisms. The linearization algorithm we describe is computationally very similar to ETLA, but allows an effective treatment of strongly-interacting lines. This algorithm has been implemented (in several codes) with two different transfer formalisms in all three one-dimensional geometries. We also describe a variation of the algorithm that handle… more

Radiation effects and micromechanics of SiC/SiC composites

Description: The development and use of SiC/SiC composite structures will achieve the following benefits to the fusion program: improved high-temperature energy conversion in the blanket modules, resulting in improved cost of electricity; enhanced feasibility for passive safety features in case of operational or intentional accidents; and reduced amount of radioactivity and beneficially changed decay characteristics. We report here our progress made on fundamental understanding of displacement damage in SiC… more

Photodisintegration of the deuteron with polarized photons from LEGS

Description: An experiment is described which will measure the d(..gamma..,p) reaction with polarized photon beams from LEGS ranging in energy from 50 MeV to 530 MeV. The data will yield a new high-resolution high-statistics determination of the total unpolarized cross section, will isolate for the first time the polarization dependent part of the reaction, and will measure the photon-beam asymmetry with much higher resolution and accuracy than available from existing data. These will provide one of the mos… more

Thermodynamics of copper-nickel alloys containing aluminum, silicon, titanium, and chromium relative to their use in ceramic brazing

Description: By varying the copper-to-nickel ratio the activity coefficients of Al, Si, Ti, and Cr can be varied over a wide range. Thus to a degree one can tailor the behavior of such alloys for usefulness in brazing ceramics. Further, considerable amounts of these active elements can be present while the ability of carbon to reduce the surface oxide film in a high-vacuum system is retained. The critical aluminum concentrations required to prevent the formation of SiO/sub 2/, TiO, or Cr/sub 2/O/sub 3/ by r… more
