Vilcabamba Uranium Deposits, Cuzco Department, Peru

Description: Abstract: In 1957 uranium was discovered in the Vilcabamba district on the north flank of the Cordillera Vilcabamba, part of the Cordillera Oriental. This district contains principally small copper-nickel veins. Small lenses of uraninite occur in calcite veins cutting Permian Copacabana limestone. Uranium is most abundant marginal to centers of strongest copper-nickel mineralization. Leaching and oxidation are virtually absent because of Pleistocene glaciation. Four separate areas in which uranium has been identified are Huamanapi, Calderon, Minasmayo, and Negrillas. The Puntarayoc area, near Pampaconas, is considered a separate district. The deposits have been tested by trenching, drilling, and sampling concurrently with geologic reconnaissance mapping of the surrounding region.

Reconnaissance for Radioactive Minerals in the Southern Part of Brazil

Description: From introduction: This report describes the results of reconnaissance for radioactivity of rocks, exclusive of coal, in the States of Rio de Janeiro, Sao Paulo, Parana, Santa Catarina and Rio Grande do Sul during the years 195 through 1956. Reports on reconnaissance and detailed studies of uraniferous coal are being prepared for publication. This report concerns work performed by the Brazilian National Nuclear Energy Commission and the United States Geological Survey (on behalf of the United States Atomic Energy Commission), and it is published with the permission of these agencies.

Uraniferous Coal and Carbonaceous Shale in Northeast Paraná, Brazil

Description: From abstract: Uraniferous coal has been found in northeast Parana', Brazil, in the Rio Bonito formation of Pennsylvanian age. In the majority of coal samples taken the uranium oxide content ranges from 0.005 to 0.030 percent, but selected screened samples have contained as much as 0.45 percent uranium oxide. The sampled thickness of the coal seam ranges from 17 to 54 centimeters and averages 31 centimeters. Channel samples across the entire thickness of the coal zone were taken in two places. All other samples were taken as grab samples from either mine waste dumps or coal zones that had high radioactivity.

Magnesite Deposits of Central Ceará, Brazil

Description: From introduction: The purpose of this study was to investigate the quantity and quality of [Central Ceara, Brazil] magnesite, and the writer concludes that this group of deposits constitutes one of the major reserves of high-grade magnesite in the Western Hemisphere. The ore could be used in the production of any commercial grade of magnesia with little or no beneficiation. Soil and alluvial overburden is thin between widespread outcrops, so all the deposits could be mined from open pits.

Tungsten Investigations in the Republic of Argentina, 1942-43

Description: From foreword: This is a progress report describing four tungsten mines in the Republic of Argentina that were examined between October 1942 and May 1943. The work leading to this report was carried on by the Geological Survey, United States Department of the Interior, and Direcci6n de Minas y Geologia, Ministerio de Agricultura de la Republica Argentina. This work was part of a larger cooperative program sponsored by the Interdepartmental Committee on Scientific and Cultural Cooperation and was carried on under the auspices of the United States Department of State. It is hoped that this cooperative work will be continued, for it is not only of direct practical use to miners but of high scientific interest.
