Nuclear Data for Basic and Applied Science, Vol. 1

Description: We have performed the coincidence experiments (..cap alpha..,..cap alpha..'f) and (..cap alpha..,..cap alpha..'nf) on /sup 238/U for a beam energy E/sub ..cap alpha../ = 120 MeV and for ..cap alpha..-scattering angles theta/sub ..cap alpha..'/ = 9/sup 0/, 15/sup 0/, and 17/sup 0/. The 9/sup 0/ and 17/sup 0/ data correspond to maxima in the angular distribution for the isoscalar giant quadrupole resonance, whereas the 15/sup 0/ data lie close to a minimum. Using a set of fission counters which c… more

Sources for proportional tube gain variation: What to do about it

Description: In the high-energy domain systematic uncertainties become a substantial fraction of attainable energy resolution of a proportional tube electromagnetic calorimeter. Sources of nonuniformity and fluctuation of calorimeter response are discussed and test data on the magnitude of the effects are presented. Possible ways of maintaining these effects under control are discussed and test data are discussed which demonstrated that such effects could in fact be monitored and corrected to less than 1%.

SLAC Scanner Processor applications in the data acquisition system for the upgraded Mark II detector

Description: The SLAC Scanner Processor is a general purpose, programmable FASTBUS crate/cable master/slave module. This device plays a central role in the readout, buffering and pre-processing of data from the upgraded Mark II detector's new central drift chamber. In addition to data readout, the SSPs assist in a variety of other services, such as detector calibration, FASTBUS system management, FASTBUS system initialization and verification, and FASTBUS module testing. 9 refs., 1 fig., 2 tabs.

Effects of rod worth and drop speed on the BWR off-center rod drop accident

Description: BWR off-center RDA calculations have been performed for selected rod worths and drop speeds. While in all cases the peak fuel enthalpy was well below the 280 cal/g fuel criterion, a substantial sensitivity to control rod worth and rod drop speed was observed.

Experimental and analytical study of loss-of-flow transients in EBR-II occurring at decay power levels

Description: A series of eight loss-of-flow (LOF) tests have been conducted in EBR-II to study the transition between forced and natural convective flows following a variety of loss-of-primary-pumping power conditions from decay heat levels. Comparisons of measurements and pretest/posttest predictions were made on a selected test. Good agreements between measurements and predictions was found prior to and just after the flow reaching its minimum, but the agreement is not as good after that point. The temper… more

Ion beam characterization of multi-layer dielectric reflectors

Description: Energetic ion beams were used to characterize multilayer dielectric reflectors. Alpha-particle beams with beam spot sizes between 10 microns and a few millimeters were scattered from reflectors consisting of 32-layer SiO/sub 2//HfO/sub 2/ and 38-layer MgF/sub 2//ThF/sub 4/. The RBS spectra reveal the nature of the laser damage processes by providing information on diffusion, mixing, and loss of material in the coatings. The particle-induced x-ray emission (PIXE) technique gave complimentary res… more

Chaotic iteration and parallel divergence

Description: Parallelization of standard multigroup methods used to solve the linear (Boltzmann) transport equation in the discrete ordinates (S/sub n/) representation, coupled chaotic iteration scheme, and convergence are the focus of this analysis. On the Denelcor HEP, we investigate the parallel extension of two serial iteration schemes, categorize speedup, and perform some numerical experiments in chaotic iteration.

Ultimate Safe (US) Reactor

Description: The Ultimate Safe (US) Reactor is a reactor that eliminates the traditional safety concerns of nuclear fission reactors. The US reactor has an insignificant source term and no reasonable criticality accident. Furthermore, the negligible residual after-heat in the reactor renders its shutdown capability comparable or superior to conventional power sources. Fission products are continuously removed at the rate they are produced. The reactor is operated with no excess criticality, hence no critica… more

Present Status of Hot Dry Rock Technology

Description: The field experiments have been conducted principally at Fenton Hill, New Mexico. The completed phase I confirmed the technical feasibility of the HDR concept by creating a small hydraulically fractured reservoir and extracting heat from it for over a year at rates up to 5 megawatts. The second phase extends the technology to the creation and operation of an industrial-scale HDR system that will produce heat at a temperature and rate suitable for producing electricity, with thermal drawdown of … more

Reactor vessel cladding separate effects studies

Description: The existence of a layer of tough weld overlay cladding on the interior of a light-water reactor pressure vessel could mitigate damage caused during certain overcooling transients. The potential benefit of the cladding is that it could keep a short surface flaw, which would otherwise become long, from growing either by impeding crack initiation or by arresting a running crack. Two aspects critical to cladding behavior will be reported: irradiation effects on cladding toughness and the response … more

Overheating in silicon during pulsed-laser irradiation

Description: Nanosecond resolution time-resolved x-ray diffraction measurements of thermal strain have been used to measure the interface temperatures in silicon during pulsed-laser irradiation. The pulsed-time-structure of the Cornell High Energy Synchrotron Source (CHESS) was used to measure the temperature of the liquid-solid interface of <111> silicon during melting with an interface velocity of 11 m/s, at a time of near zero velocity, and at a regrowth velocity of 6 m/s. The results of these measuremen… more

Doubly differential cross sections of collision-produced forward electron emission

Description: The velocity space distribution of electrons emitted near the forward direction from collisions involving fast, highly stripped oxygen ions with gaseous and solid targets is presented and described in terms of multipole moments of the ejected charge distribution, which permits direct comparison with recent theory. The results are from a novel apparatus permitting rapid and efficient data acquisition by employing position-sensitive electron detection to combine angle definition with conventional… more

Los Alamos racquetball contamination incident

Description: Several employees of the Los Alamos Plutonium Facility were found to have low levels of radioactivity on their hands and clothing when they arrived for work one morning. The initial concern was that the stringent contamination or material controls at the facility had failed, and that one or more of the employees had either accidentally or intentionally removed plutonium from the Laboratory premises. Fortunately, however, an investigation revealed that the source of the radioactivity was radon d… more

Late biological effects from internal and external exposure

Description: Information on late biological effects of radiation was obtained from the long-term medical followup of a small population of Marshallese accidentally exposed to radioactive fallout from a thermonuclear test in 1954. Endocrine data are compatible with a sequence of nonstochastic radiation effects. The ingestion of radioisotopes of iodine produced clinical thyroid hypofunction in children, biochemical evidence of thyroid dysfunction in some adults, thyroid adenomatous module formation, and, as a… more
