Tetragonal Structure of Indium

Description: It is shown that the tetragonal stricter of indium may be accounted for on the basis of the electron theory of metals by demonstrating that, with suitable assumptions concerning effective masses of overlap electrons and other parameters, the total energy of the metal crystal is less for the observe red c/a ratio that for a c/a ration of unity, volume being preserved in the change of c/a ratio. No increase in the energy is found with further increases in c/a ratio. The effect of holes in the fir… more

Prescoping Optimization for Selection of Enriched Uranium Gas-Cooled Power Reactor Design

Description: A preliminary set of performance calculations were made for enriched reactor cores based on five cylindrical vessel designs ranging from13 to 36 feet in diameter. The capital costs per kilowatt of electrical plant output as shown in Table II indicate than an economic optimum selection of pressure vessel size should be either the 25 foot or the 36 foot vessel.

The Proton Component of the Primary Cosmic Radiation

Description: The proton component has been extensively studied at high altitudes on a series of 6 Skyhook balloon flights at various latitudes using the Čerenkov-scintillation counter technique. The intensity of primary protons has been measured at 4°, 41°, 53°, and 55° geomagnetic latitude. The proton differential energy spectrum has been measured directly in the region 250-750 Mev. It is observed that primary alphas and protons have the same form of rigidity spectrum from 1 Bv to 17 Bv. A series of cutoff… more

Field Emission from Metal Whiskers

Description: Vapor grown single crystal whiskers were produced from Al, Cu, Fe, Ni, Si, Mo, and C. The technique is described, and it is pointed out that it enlarges the scope of field and ion microscopy. Involatile imparities can be eliminated making it possible to grow clean emitters of almost any material in high vacuum.

Thermoelectric Properties of the Plasma Diode

Description: It is well known that thermionic emission into vacuum is accompanied by a Peltier cooling of the vacuum metal interface. The interface may be thought of as a junction between two conductors: the metal, and an electron gas whose distribution is determined primarily by space charge. The addition of a small amount of easily ionized gas to the vacuum region does not affect the Peltier cooling of the interface, but is does squeeze the space charge region to about one micron and replaces most of the … more

Polarography in Organic Analysis

Description: The discussion attempts to summarize present trends and future possibilities. After consideration of the areas of analytical applicability of polarography of organic compounds with stress on the use of chemical treatment to convert polarographically inert species to active ones, the importance of the composition of the test solution is discussed from the viewpoint of the effects of pH, buffer composition and concentration, ionic strength, solvent nature and additives. The critical factors in th… more

Calculation of the G Factor for Gas Scattering Experiments

Description: The "G factor'' relating the yield to the beam intensity, target density, and scattering cross section is calculated for several types of aperture boundaries. The case of a front aperture composed of two parallel edges of infinite height with a rear aperture of any shape is calculated up to terms in the fourth derivative of the cross section. (W.D.M.)

Initial Start-Up and Low Power Operation. Test Results DL-S-161 (T-550127). Special Procedure Section 1

Description: The purpose of the test was to determine the Reactor Plant Systems operating characteristics during start-up and in the low power range. The Decay Heat Removal Valve, instead of operating for one hour as called for in the Test Procedure, operated for only six minutes. This was due to the fact that the turbine room basement became filled with steam when the Decay Heat Removal Valve opened. Due to the fact that the valve operated only once, the data therefore includes information for only one loa… more

Reactor Coolant Loop Outage Test. Section I. Second Performance. Test Results DL-S-170 (T-554928-A)

Description: The purpose of this test was to determine the temperature transient experiences as a result of the loss of an operating loop during power operations when the main coolant hydraulic stop valves remain open. Also to determine the effectiveness of the operating procedure for removing a loop from service when the reactor is critical. The conclusions were the temperature transients experienced in the 1C loop as a result of keeping the hydraulic valves open after the 1C Main Coolant pump had been sto… more

Governor Performance Tests. Section IV. Second Performance. Test Results DL-S-174

Description: The purpose of this test was to determine the load at which each of the governor valves opens with a primary plant T(avg) of 500 F. Conclusions: It was found that the No. 2 valve opened at a generator load of 16.6 mw, the No. 3 valve opened at a generator load of 33.6 mw and the No. 4 valve opened at a generator load of 48.4 mw.

Flow Distribution Across the Core. Test Results DL-S-182 (T-550097). Section II

Description: The purpose of the test was to determine the flow mixing characteristics of the lower plenum. Conclusion: Mixing appears to be quite small. The temperature indicated by the thermocouple nearest the cold loop decreased approximately 15 F. The cold loop temperature was 15 below the initial reactor coolant average temperature when the cold loop was places in services. The thermocouple furthest from the cold loop showed little or no change in temperature. The rate of change of reactor coolant tempe… more

Results of Parallel Flow Oscillator Studies. Progress Report No. 2

Description: From the results of the tests it is clear that changing from series to parallel flow effects little or no change i the nature of the reactivity feedback. The physical processes which characterize the magnitude and time dependence of the negative power coefficient of reactivity are apparently identical in both instances. Accordingly, it is reasonable to infer that the conclusions reached as he result of the series flow studies are still valid. These are :(1) the overall power (temperature) coeff… more

Oscillation Results in EBR-I, Mark III with Fuel Rods Loose: Steady State Temperatures for Low Power Parallel Flow Runs. Progress Report No. 3

Description: Oscillator and flow change tests carried out the the fuel rods loosened in two of the seven core assemblies failed to reveal the existence of a significant positive temperature coefficient of reactivity. However, fuel rod positioning was not the same in the test as in Mark II.

Technical Report No. 6

Description: The original melting apparatus has been converted from a one-zone to a six zone operation. Another one-zone refiner has been constructed. The experiments that have been performed to date with these two refiners are discussed in the firs two sections of this report. It is pointed out that it appears that zone melting has a limited application for the refinement of KCl and KBr. We are exploring two other means of purification: 1) ion exchange, and 2) distillation. Work on the analysis of the salt… more

Collection and Analysis of Radioactive Material from Sibley Quarry

Description: Samples of various media were collected at several points in southwestern Michigan, Ohio, and Ontario during 1958 and analyzed for radioactivity as part of a general pre-operational radiological survey of the environment of the Enrico Fermi Nuclear Power Reactor. Media sampled included earth, dust, rain, surface water, underground water, surface sediment, benthos, fish, vegetation, and mammals. Data provide an indication of the existing levels of radioactivity present in environmental media in … more

14-Year 113Cd

Description: The half lives of Cd/sup 113m/ and Cd/sup 115m/ have been redetermined to be 14 sintering time 2 years and 44.2 sintering time 0.5 days, respectively. The ratio of Cd/sup 113m/Cd/sup 115m/ yields from thermal-neutron fission of U/sup 235/ is 0.27 sintering time 0.03, and the ratio of (n, ) formation cross sections is 0.31 sintering time 0.03. Combination of these ratios with literature values for the Cd/sup 115m/ fission yield and (n, ) formation cross section gives (1.9 sintering time 0.2) x 1… more
