Synthesis of Polyaldehydes

Description: Part one of this thesis concerns the polymerizability of some α,β-unsaturated monaldehydes and also relates the synthesis of some new polyaldehydes which have not been reported in the literature. Part two concerns the polymerization of glyoxal, the simplest dialdehyde, and the structure elucidation of this new polymer.

High Temperature Enthalpies of the Lead Halides: Enthalpies and Entropies of Fusion

Description: The objectives of this investigation were: 1. To establish calorimetrically the transition temperature for the orthorhombic to cubic transition exhibited by PbF₂ and to determine the enthalpy of this transition. 2. To determine if the solid-solid phase transitions claimed in the literature for PbCl₂, PbF₂, PbBr₂, and PbI₂ were of thermodynamic importance, and if so, to determine the enthalpies of transition. 3. To determine if the discontinuous thermal expansions reported by Hsu for the lead halides were of thermodynamic importance. 4. To obtain reliable heat content data for the lead halides in both the solid and liquid states.

Synthesis and Infrared Spectra of Substituted Phthalimidines

Description: A number of N-substituted-3-hydroxy-3-phenylphthal-imidines and some of the isomeric amides have been prepared in order to study changes in the infrared spectra of these compounds due to structural changes in the molecule, particularly with reference to a hydroxyl band at 3.0µ and a carbonyl band at 5.75µ.

Oxovanadium(IV) Complexes of Substituted N-(2-Thiophenyl)Salicylideneimine

Description: In an effort to study the spectral, magnetic, and stereochemical properties of vanadyl complexes, both a new series of vanadyl complexes derived from type (VII) ligands with subnormal magnetic moment and from type (VIII) ligands with normal magnetic moment are synthesized and characterized.

ESR Studies of Group IV Substituted Anilines

Description: The purpose of the investigation described herein was to investigate the degree of delocalization of the unpaired electron in ion radicals formed in the oxidation process of compounds with aromatic rings connected by means of various groups and atoms not entering the ring; then, to establish the relationship of coupling constants in radical cations with substituent σ values. The parent cation radical, in which the co-planar ion was derived from N,N-dimethylaniline, was selected in order to maximize the substituent effects on coupling constants and to obtain couplings at several positions (specifically, CH3, N, and ring protons).

Nitrogen Derivatives of Naphthoquinone

Description: A series of nitrogen derivatives of 1,4-naphthoquinone, which are structurally similar to the compounds of Hall, has been prepared by this worker. In general, the amido groups are those of the long-chain, fatty acids, and it is believed they will have increased physiological activity. These compounds are to be tested for medicinal activity by Parke-Davis and Company.

Cycloadditions of Dichloroketene

Description: An investigation of the cycloaddition behavior of dichloroketene with various types of olefins seemed in order to determine if dichloroketene behaved similarly to dialkylketenes. It was anticipated that a study of this type would indicate the reactivity of dichloroketene to various types of olefinic compounds and thus establish if the ease of cycloaddition with dichloroketene parallels the nucleophilicity of the olefin as it does in dialkylketenes.

Base Effects on the Thermal Decomposition of Sec-butyllithium Solutions

Description: The pyrolysis of sec-butyllithium in solution was studied in an attempt to understand the loss of stereo-specificity and the atypical kinetics that have been reported. Additionally, the effect of added lithium alkoxides was studied to determine their effects on the highly reactive sec-butyllithium substrate.

Synthesis of Selected 2-imidazolines

Description: Since Djerassi and Scholz found that 2-(aryloxy-methyl)imidazolines and their hydrochloride salts exhibit vasoconstrictive properties, the 1,2-(I) 1,3-(II) and 1,4-bis-(2-imidazolinylmethoxy) benzene (III) analogs (Fig. 1, p.2) were chosen for synthesis in order to test them for their effective vasoconstrictive characteristics and for whatever other physiological properties they might exhibit.

Self-diffusion of Pb210 and Cl36 in Molten PbCl2-KCl Mixtures in the Region of the Compound 2PbCl2-KCl

Description: The specific goal of the investigation was the measurement, as a function of temperature, of the self-diffusion coefficients of Pb210 and Cl36 in PbCl2-KCl compositions in the region of the first compound, and to calculate from these data the activation energy necessary for the diffusion of these ions.

Quantitative Chemical Analysis of the Soils of Erath County, Texas

Description: A chemical analysis of representative samples of Windthorst sand, Denton sand, and Denton clay has been made, and this analysis shows that their composition has a strict correlation with respect to their geological origins. The analyses of the different soils have shown the Windthorst sand to be highly deficient in all of the essential elements, whereas the Denton sand is deficient in only one; namely, phosphorus. The analysis of the Denton clay showed it to be highly fertile. From the consideration of the pH and the lime content, it has been determined to some extent what crops will grow in each of the soils.
