Description: Abstract: "The investigation reported herein describes surface and subsurface horizontal and vertical control, sampling, testing, laboratory testing, and analyses performed to determine the stability of a rock fill over fat clay deposits (South Fill) bordering the Hudson River at the West Point Military Academy, West Point, New York. The South Fill area in its present configuration was found to be stable and should remain stable provided use is limited to parking, athletic fields, and recreational areas. The report contains documentation of data collected since the monitoring program began in 1961."

Levee Underseepage Analysis for Special Foundation Conditions

Description: This report describes a research study in which techniques were developed for prediction of underseepage conditions for special cases of levee and foundation geometry. The differential equations for levee underseepage were derived and programmed in finite difference form for three special cases of boundary conditions. The developed programs allow analyses that are not restricted to the boundary conditions assumed in the conventional, closed form solution, i.e., two foundation layers of uniform thickness with horizontal boundaries.

Levee Underseepage Software: User Manual and Validation

Description: Report discussing the FORTRAN 77 computer program (LEVSEEP), developed to analyze levee underseepage on IBM PC compatible microcomputers with an 8087 math coprocessor. The software and associated equipment plots cross sections and piezometer data; calculates seepage flow and substratum pressure; analyzes landside berm, river side blanket, cutoff and relief well control measures; and finally, estimates the construction cost of these alternatives.

Trafficability of Soils: Effects of Surface Conditions on Drawbar Pull of a Wheeled Vehicle

Description: "A study was conducted to (a) investigate the effects of soil surface conditions on one-pass drawbar pull capabilities of a wheeled vehicle, (b) relate optimum drawbar pull to soil strength as measured by several instruments, (c) develop tentative equations for predicting optimum tractive coefficient, and (d) determine effects of tire characteristics (tread pattern and deflection) on drawbar pull. One hundred and six drawbar pullslip tests were conducted with a 3/4-ton M37 truck at a gross weight of 7240 lb. One tire size (9.00-16, 8-PR), two tread patterns (smooth and nondirectional military), and two tire deflections (15% and 35%) were tested. Surface conditions varied from dry and firm, to wetted with small amounts of water, to flooded. Asphalt surfaces also were tested" (p. xi).

Model Study of the Outlet Structures for the Wappapello Dam

Description: This memorandum constitutes a final report of the study performed at the U. S. Waterways Experiment Station on a model of the outlet works for the Wappapello Dam The model was built undistorted to the linear scale ratio, model-to-prototype, of 1 to 25. The general purpose of the model study was to check the hydraulic characteristics of all elements in the design of the outlet works, and to develop means of correcting any uneconomic, unsafe, or undesirable conditions.
