Production test-105-55-P -- Reactivity of the B Pile under shutdown conditions. Interim report

Description: At the shutdown of the B Pile, 269 active tubes were discharged and ten poison columns were charged. As a result, the pile was let considerably below critical. The present test described in this report was set up to develop methods of detecting possible changes in reactivity by periodic measurements of neutron flux in the shutdown pile. The irradiation of indium foils in an empty process tube was found to provide a satisfactory method of monitoring the shutdown pile, and was sensitive than the … more

Report on SOM Investigations in Arizona (Except the Plateau Province Area)

Description: From summary: Union Mines' examination of Arizona's pegmatites, lode deposits of the central and southeastern parts of the state, and heavy mineral concentrates from few placer deposits indicates that SOM is practically non-existent in the first two and that minor amounts of monazite and possibly other S-37 minerals are present in the last.

Methods of Analysis of Fission Products in the Experimental Biology Section

Description: From abstract: "This report describes methods used for radiochemical analysis of fission products most used in the Experimental Biology Section. The report includes methods of analysis of Sr89, Ba140-La140, Zr95-Cb95, Ce144-Pr144, and Y91 by standard chemical procedures. In addition, a method of analysis by use of an absorption curve is described in some detail for Zr95-Cb95 mixtures. The absorption curve method makes possible rapid determination of percentage composition of a mixture of isotop… more

Measurement of Weak Neutron Intensities by Szilard-Chalmers Reaction in Calcium Permanganate Solution

Description: From abstract: "A sensitive method for measuring the intensity of weak neutron sources by measuring induced Mn56 beta activity after concentration by a Szilard-Chalmers process has been developed. The practical detection efficiency for Ra-Be neutron is 7.8%; the procedure is capable of detecting a neutron intensity of about one neutron per second."

Wind-Tunnel Tests of a Modified Koppers Aeromatic Impeller-Generator Combination, TED No. NACA ARR 2901

Description: From Summary: "An investigation was conducted in the 6- by 6-foot test section of the Langley stability tunnel on a modified Koppers Aeromatic wind-driven impeller-generator combination. This investigation consisted of a few fixed pitch tests and a series of variable pitch tests. The fixed pitch tests indicated that the impeller should operate between the blade-pitch angles of 20 and 32deg at the specified output of 11.7 kilowatts in order to remain within the specified rotational speed of from… more

Wind-Tunnel Tests to Determine Aileron Characteristics of the McDonnell XFD-1 Airplane, TED No. NACA 23102

Description: "Tests were performed on a partial span of the wing of a McDonnell XFD-1 airplane to determine a combination of sealed internal balance and spring-tab stiffness for the aileron that would give satisfactory stick-force characteristics for the airplane. Two sealed internal balances were tested in combination with spring tabs of various stiffnesses. One of the combinations was tested at several speeds to determine the variation of stick force with speed" (p. 1).

Altitude-Wind-Tunnel Investigation of Performance of Several Propellers on YP-47M Airplane at High Blade Loadings 4 - Curtiss 732-1C2-0 Four-Blade Propeller

Description: "An altitude-wind-tunnel investigation has been made to determine the performance of a Curtiss 732-1C2-0 four-blade propeller on a YP-47M airplane at high blade loadings and engine power. Propeller characteristics were obtained for a range of power coefficients from 0.30 to 1.00 at free-stream Mach numbers of 0.40 and .50" (p. 1).

Altitude-Wind-Tunnel Investigation of Performance of Several Propellers on YP-47M Airplane at High Blade Loading 2 - Curtiss 838-1C2-18R1 Four-Blade Propeller

Description: "An investigation was conducted in the Cleveland altitude wind tunnel to determine the performance of a Curtiss propeller with four 838-1C2-1SR1 blades on a YP-47M airplane at high blade loadings and engine powers. The study was made for a range of power coefficients between 0.30 and 1.00 at free-stream Mach numbers of 0.40 and 0.50. The results of the force measurements indicate primarily the trend of propeller efficiency for changes in power coefficient or advance-diameter ratio, inasmuch as … more

Performance of 19XB-2A Gas Turbine 1 - Effect of Pressure Ratio and Inlet Pressure on Turbine Performance for an Inlet Temperature of 800 Degrees R

Description: "An investigation of the 19XB-2A gas turbine is being conducted at the Cleveland laboratory to determine the effect on turbine performance of various inlet pressures, inlet temperatures, pressure ratios, and wheel speeds. The engine of which this turbine is a component is designed to operate at an air flow of 30 pounds per second at a compressor rotor speed of 17,000 rpm at sea-level conditions. At these conditions the total-pressure ratio is 2.08 across the turbine and the turbine inlet total … more
