Development of Nondestructive Testing Systems for in situ Evaluation of Concrete Structures

Description: Final report regarding the testing of concrete structures. Partial abstract: "The need for additional capability to nondestructively evaluate concrete in large structures is similar for both the US Army Corps of Engineers (CE) and the US Bureau of Reclamation (USBR). In view of this mutual need, the CE and the USBR entered into a cooperative program of research and development designed to increase the nondestructive testing evaluation capabilities of these two organizations, with each agency sharing the program planning and financial support."

Concepts for Installation of the Precast Concrete Stay-in-Place Forming System for Lock Wall Rehabilitation in an Operational Lock

Description: Report describing a study to extend the application of a method to rehabilitate damaged lock walls that uses a stay-in-place forming system. "During this study, operational and design criteria were developed to serve as the basis for design. A number of repair concepts were identified that satisfied the criteria" (abstract, para. 3).

Comparison of Cast-in-Place Concrete Versus Precast Concrete Stay-in-Place Forming Systems for Lock Wall Rehabilitation

Description: "The objectives of this report are as follows: (a) To present the design and details utilized on the precast concrete panel rehabilitation at Troy Lock. (b) To compare the results of precast concrete panel rehabilitation with previous cast-in-place repairs, with respect to quality, cost, and schedule. (c) To recommend refinements in the details and methods of fabrication and erection of the precast panels, based on lessons learned from work performed at Troy Lock." (p. 2).

Geotechnical Aspects of Rock Erosion in Emergency Spillway Channels, Report 1

Description: "The problem of rock erosion in unlined emergency spillway channels is described in this first-of-a series report. Recent CE and non-CE case histories which illustrate the potentially hazardous impacts of excessive erosion in discharge channels are described as are the various factors controlling erosion and other responses to emergency spillway overflow. Research programs designed to improve geotechnical capabilities with respect to selection of cost-effective preventive and remedial measures in discharge channels where the risk of excessive erosion appears high are also discussed" (abstract, para. 1).

Nondestructive Vibratory Testing and Evaluation Procedure for Military Roads and Streets

Description: This report describes a procedure for the nondestructive evaluation of military roads and streets, performed with the Road Rater 2008 (an electrohydraulic vibrator which measures the load-deflection response of pavements). "[It] also describes the testing equipment, testing techniques, data reduction procedures, and computational methodology used in developing the evaluation procedures. Detailed examples are presented in the Appendices to guide the users through the evaluation procedures for both flexible (AC) and rigid (PCC) highway pavements. An operator's guide describing the day-to-day maintenance and operation of the NODET is presented in Appendix C" (abstract, para. 2).

State-of-the-Art for Assessing Earthquake Hazards in the United States, Report 25: Parameters for Specifying Intensity-Related Earthquake Ground Motions

Description: Abstract: "A set of 12 charts are presented that relate Modified Mercalli intensity units to peak horizontal acceleration, velocity and duration for near field and far field locations, hard and soft sites, and sizes of earthquakes. Also shown is the mean, mean plus one standard deviation, mean plus two standard deviations, and the highest observed values. Ratios are provided of vertical to horizontal motions and predominant periods. These charts are for use with known fault sources and for floating earthquakes in zones where there are no identifiable causative faults. The procedure provides parameters for shaping time histories to be used for dynamic analyses."

State-of-the-Art for Assessing Earthquake Hazards in the United States, Report 28: Recommended Accelerograms for Earthquake Ground Motions

Description: Abstract: "A catalog of recommended accelerograms and response spectra is provided to accompany all representative values for Richter magnitudes at distance determined peak horizontal accelerations-velocities-durations, hard and soft sites, shallow and deep earthquakes. Accelerograms are also recommended for corresponding Modified Mercalli intensities. The accelerograms are related to the Krinitzsky-Chang-Nuttli curves for magnitude and distance, and the Krinitzsky-Chang curves for MM intensity."

Earthquake Resistance of Earth and Rock-Fill Dams, Report 2: Analysis of Response of Rifle Gap Dam to Project Rulison Underground Nuclear Detonation

Description: Summary: The motion of Rifle Gap Dam was measured in September 1969 during the Project RULISON underground nuclear explosion. The observed response was then compared with the response computed in a mathematical model. Observed and computed responses were similar. From this study it appears that the mathematical models used are applicable to the design and analysis of soil structures, at least for ground motion intensities comparable to those observed at Rifle Gap Dam.
