Oak Ridge Environmental Information System (OREIS): Phase I, System Definition Document. Environmental Restoration Program

Description: The Phase 1--System Definition Document documents the basis for establishing a consolidated environmental data base and information system for the Department of Energy Oak Ridge Field Office (OR) facilities operated by Martin Marietta Energy Systems, Inc. (Energy Systems). The Automated Data Processing System Development Methodology (ADPSDM), an Energy Systems procedure to assist in developing scientific and technical systems, was used to guide the preparation of the feasibility study and the system requirements definition, both of which are contained in this document. The Feasibility Study (Part 1) documents the existing system and data management practices and establishes and analyzes preliminary alternatives to be considered for the development of a consolidated system, i.e., the Oak Ridge Environmental Information System (OREIS). Alternatives were analyzed for technical and operational feasibility, benefits, and risks. Performance criteria used to rank alternatives included standardization, documentation, robustness, integration, reliability, and predictability. Of the three alternatives studied--request/referral, distributed, and centralized--the centralized system was selected to be most feasible because of its conformance to the performance criteria.

Multiaxial deformation and life prediction model and experimental data for advanced silicon nitride ceramics

Description: This paper summarizes recent experimental results on creep and creep rupture behavior of a commercial grade of Si{sub 3}N{sub 4} ceramic in the temperature range of 1150 to 1300C obtained at ORNL; and introduces a tentative multiaxial deformation and life prediction model for ceramic materials under general thermomechanical loadings. Issues related to the possible standardization of the data analysis methodology and possible future research needs for high temperature structural ceramics in the area of development of data base and life prediction methodology are also discussed.

Radiological survey results at the former Bridgeport Brass Company facility, Seymour, Connecticut

Description: At the request of the US Department of Energy (DOE), a team from Oak Ridge National Laboratory conducted a radiological survey of the former Bridgeport Brass Company facility, Seymour, Connecticut. The survey was performed in May 1992. The purpose of the survey was to determine if the facility had become contaminated with residuals containing radioactive materials during the work performed in the Ruffert building under government contract in the 1960s. The survey included a gamma scanning over a circumscribed area around the building, and gamma and beta-gamma scanning over all indoor surfaces as well as the collection of soil and other samples for radionuclide analyses. Results of the survey demonstrated radionuclide concentrations in indoor and outdoor samples, and radiation measurements over floor and wall surfaces, in excess of the DOE Formerly Utilized Sites Remedial Action Program guidelines. Elevated uranium concentrations outdoors were limited to several small, isolated spots. Radiation measurements exceeded guidelines indoors over numerous spots and areas inside the building, mainly in Rooms 1--6 that had been used in the early government work.

NACA Conference on Aerodynamics of High Speed Aircraft

The Minimum Energy Loss Propeller

Description: "Various cases are presented of the solution of the problem of the most efficient propeller, more general cases being considered than the one by Betz in 1919: namely, that of a propeller under a limiting light load. The problem is solved directly and also with the aid of the Ritz method which became readily applicable after the author proposed a method for the solution of the propeller problem, in general, with the aid of trigonometric series. The design of a propeller with the aid of this method is given and an analysis is made of the effect of the fuselage and of the viscosity coefficient mu on the character of the solution of the variational problem" (p. 1).

The Minimum Induced Drag of Aerofoils

Description: This report helps explain the phenomenon of flight. It contains some theorems concerning the arrangement of airplane wings which are of considerable practical interest. In particular, it shows the theoretical reasons for the decrease of drag which accompanies all increase in the aspect ratio or lateral extension of a wing. The efficiency of a given arrangement of wings may be calculated from the formulae derived in this paper.

The Monoplane as a Lifting Vortex Surface

Description: "In Prandtl's airfoil theory the monoplane was replaced by a single lifting vortex line and yielded fairly practical results. However, the theory remained restricted to the straight wing. Yawed wings and those curved in flight direction could not be computed with this first approximation; for these the chordwise lift distribution must be taken into consideration. For the two-dimensional problem the transition from the lifting line to the lifting surface has been explained by Birnbaum. In the present report the transition to the three-dimensional problem is undertaken" (p. 1).

The Minimum Induced Drag of Aerofoils

Description: Equations are derived to demonstrate which distribution of lifting elements result in a minimum amount of aerodynamic drag. The lifting elements were arranged (1) in one line, (2) parallel lying in a transverse plane, and (3) in any direction in a transverse plane. It was shown that the distribution of lift which causes the least drag is reduced to the solution of the problem for systems of airfoils which are situated in a plane perpendicular to the direction of flight.

Micromechanical Study of Metals

Description: "The Institut Scientifique Experimental des Transports at Moscow established toward the end of 1925 had since its inception included in its program the study of the mechanism of plastic deformation and the problems associated with it with reference to the materials of the means of transport. Before the program thus determined upon could be carried out, it was necessary to adopt a method of research, or, more exactly, a system of such methods. Because of the modest equipment of the laboratory of the recently established institute, the choice of any particular method was determined not only by the advantages it offered but also by the resources available. As a result of a series of studies and investigations, a method was determined upon which in this paper will be denoted as the micromechanical method" (p. 1).

The Oscillating Circular Airfoil on the Basis of Potential Theory

Description: "Proceeding from the thesis by W. Kinner the present report treats the problem of the circular airfoil in uniform airflow executing small oscillations, the amplitudes of which correspond to whole functions of the second degree in x and y. The pressure distribution is secured by means of Prandtl's acceleration potential. It results in a system of linear equations the coefficients of which can be calculated exactly with the aid of exponential functions and Hankel's functions" (p. 1).
