The Vaiont Slide: A Geotechnical Analysis Based on New Geologic Observations of the Failure Surface, Volume 1: Main Text

Description: First part of a final report describing "efforts to confirm the existence and nature of clay seams in the [Vaiont Slide] mass and to confirm the possible existence of an 'old' slide at the site. These efforts were made by (a) firsthand field observations of the geology, (b) an examination of preslide and postslide airphotographs, (c) laboratory testing of samples of failure plane materials, and (d) and examination and translation of geologic and other documents related to preslide and postslide conditions" (abstract, para. 2). The report also presents stability analyses of the Vaiont Slide.

New Concepts in Fish Ladder Design: Analysis of Barriers to Upstream Fish Migration, Volume IV of IV, Investigation of the Physical and Biological Conditions Affecting Fish Passage Success at Culverts and Waterfalls, 1982-1984 Final Report.

Description: A synopsis of the project components was prepared to provide an overview for persons who are not fisheries scientists or engineers. This short report can be used also by technical persons who are interested in the scope of the project, and as a summary of the three main reports. The contents includes an historical perspective on fishway design which provides the basis for this project. The major project accomplishments and significant additions to the body of knowledge about the analysis and design of fishways are discussed. In the next section the research project organization, objectives and components are presented to familiarize the reader with the scope of this project. The summary report concludes with recommendations for assisting in the enhancement and restoration of fisheries resources from the perspective of fish passage problems and their solution. Promising research topics are included.

Crack Parameters

Description: One of the important variables in the design of the end cap calorimeter is the number of angular divisions that should be made in the face of the calorimeter array. While it would be ideal to have no such divisions, they are unavoidable because the maximum size for uranium sheets is less than the diameter of the array. These divisions create regions which are either partially or totally devoid of absorber and readout. It is the purpose of this note to analyze the effects of different parameters on the size of these cracks. This analysis assumes wedge shaped structures of significant depth (i.e. > 20% of the total depth). For such modules there are five variables which affect the size of a crack. They are: (1) The clearance between modules. The extent to which the module wall and the array extend into this region depends on the tolerances on the manufacture of the module. All of the module construction techniques currently under consideration have very tight tolerances (e.g. 2 mils). Therefore, this region is assumed to be void of solid material. In the C.C this region is thought to be .090 inches wide. (2) The thickness of the module walls. The wall thickness depends on which module is discussed. Design thicknesses range from .078 inches in the C.C. modules to .150 inches in the E.C leakage modules. Because tight tolerances are assumed on the construction of the modules the skin is assumed to be perfectly flat. (3) The dimension tolerance on the uranium width. The effect of the dimension tolerance varies depending on the location of the module.
