Uranium Hydrogeochemical and Stream Sediment Reconnaissance of the Moab NTMS Quadrangle, Utah/Colorado, Including Concentrations of Forty-Three Additional Elements

Description: Partial abstract: "During the summers of 1976, 1977, and 1978, 442 water and 1755 sediment samples were collected from 1801 locations within the 19 400 km2 area of the Moab quadrangle, Utah and Colorado, by private contractors for the Los Alamos Scientific Laboratory. Water samples were collected from streams, springs, and wells; wet and dry sediment samples were collected both from stream channels and from springs. Each water sample was analyzed for 13 elements, including uranium, and each sediment sample was analyzed for 43 elements, including uranium, thorium, and vanadium. All field and analytical data are listed in the appendixes of this report" (p. 1).

FLAT FLAME BURNER ANALYSES

Description: Velocity and temperature fields in the sintered material surrounding an embedded cooling coil in a Kaskan type flat flame burner are predicted. An approximate two-dimensional velocity field is obtained in closed form using a potential flow analogy. The velocity profile above the burner surface will be flat if the distance from the burner surface to the plane of the coil is sufficiently large that the coil wake is ameliorated. Quantitative results for this minimum distance are presented. Several approximations to the temperature field are discussed. Detailed temperature profiles are given for the simplest - one-dimensional with uniform velocity - and the most complex - two-dimensional with potential flow velocity field. The influence of the burner and cooling geometries, fuel type and stoichiometry, flow rate, ambient and cooling water temperatures and sintered material properties, are all described by a small set of dimensionless parameters. Optimization of burner performance in terms of these parameters is discussed. It is hoped that the results will be useful in the design of burners for flame structure studies.

HUMAN DISEASE FROM RADON EXPOSURES: THE IMPACT OF ENERGY CONSERVATION IN RESIDENTIAL BUILDINGS

Description: The level of radon and its daughters inside conventional buildings is often higher than the ambient background level. Interest in conserving energy is motivating homeowners and builers to reduce ventilation and hence to increase the concentration of indoor generated air contaminants, including radon. It is unliekly that the current radiation levels in conventional homes and buildings from radon daughters could account for a significant portion of the lung cancer rate in non-smokers. However, it is likely that some increased lung cancer risk would result from increased radon exposures; hence, it is prudent not to allow radon concentrations to rise significantly. There are several ways to implement energy conservation measures without increasing risks.

Applications of Passive Thin Films

Description: The physical properties of thin films affect the performance and durability of nearly every solar energy conversion device. Familiar examples of thin films for solar applications are optical materials and protective coatings. Optimized optical properties are key to cost-effective photothermal conversion where individual components must have high absorptance, reflectance, or transmittance. The protection of sensitive substrates from corrosion and/or erosion is essential to ensure adequate component and system lifetime. Such substrates range from photovoltaic materials operating near room temperature to turbine blade structural alloys in hostile environments at very high temperatures (>1,000 degrees C). Although much has been written on particular categories of thin-film materials for solar energy (for example, absorbers for receiver surfaces), to date no one has provided an overview of the spectrum of applications for passive thin films in solar energy. This work is such an overview and also reviews the material state of the art as described in the current literature. Active thin film devices such as photovoltaics and thermoeleetrics are not discussed.

Temperature-gradient and heat flow data, Grass Valley, Nevada

Description: A series of 16 shallow and intermediate-depth temperature-gradient holes were drilled for Sunoco Energy Development Co. in Grass Valley, Pershing County, Nevada, on leases held by Aminoil USA, Inc., under the cost-sharing industry-linked program of the Department of Energy. Thirteen shallow (85-152 m) and 3 intermediate-depth (360-457 m) holes were completed and logged during the period June through September, 1979. The locations of these holes and of pre-existing temperature-gradient holes are shown on plate 1. This report constitutes a final data transmittal and disclosure of results. The drilling subcontractor was Southwest Drilling and Exploration, Inc. of Central, Utah. They provided a Gardner-Denver 15W rig, a 3-man crew, and supporting equipment. A l l holes were drilled with mud as the circulating medium. Drilling histories for each hole are summarized in table 1. GeothermEx, Inc. performed on-site geological descriptions of the cuttings; obtained several temperature profiles for each hole, including an equilibrium profile taken 23 days or more after cessation of drilling; selected samples for thermal conductivity measurements; integrated temperature, temperature-gradient, and heat-flow data obtained in this project with published values; and prepared this report.

Imprinting Salmon and Steelhead Trout for Homing, 1978 Annual Report of Research.

Description: During 1978, the National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS), under contract with the Bonneville Power Administration (BPA), initiated research on imprinting salmon and steelhead trout for homing. The primary objectives of the homing research are as follows: (1) determine whether a single imprint or a series of stimuli (sequential imprinting) are necessary to assure homing for various stocks of salmonids; (2) determine a triggering mechanism to activate the homing imprint in salmonids; (3) determine the relationship between the physiological condition of fish (gill ATPase activity, etc.) and their ability to imprint. The ability to activate the imprint mechanism at the proper time should assure a suitable homing cue that, coupled with transportation, will result in high smolt survival and insure adequate return to the homing site or hatchery. For the purposes of this study, imprinting is accepted to mean a rapid and irreversible learning experience that provides fish with the ability to return to natal streams or a selected site. In our tests, we used single imprints and sequential imprints. Single imprinting means cueing fish to a unique, single water supply prior to release. Various mechanical stimuli may be used in combination with the unique water source to achieve a single imprint. Sequential imprinting means cueing fish to two or more water sources in a step-by-step process which will established a signpost for learning the route ''home''.

Geothermal logging instrumentation development progress report

Description: Evaluation of the first 275 C voltage regulators delivered by Teledyne Philbrick has begun. Teledyne delivered 50 units to Sandia; testing is being performed with the aid of microprocessor based testers and laboratory ovens. Thus far, the units short-term stability and output voltage temperature coefficient are within specification. The 4000 pF capactiros have been successfully fabricated for the Teledyne Philbrick voltage-to-frequency converter hybrid circuit. The capacitors are stable in that they changed less than {+-} 1.5% between room temperature and 300 C. The Sandia exhibit of high temperature components and hybrid circuits was well received at the annual Geothermal Resources Council Meeting in Reno, Nevada, during September 24-26, 1979. A high percentage of attendees requested purchase information for the display items. Such interest indicates a ready market for commercialization. Development of a 300 C integrated circuit, operational amplifier (op amp) is underway at Harris Semiconductor under a Sandia contract. This 300 C op amp will be pin-for-pin replacement for the popular Harris HA4602 quad op amp (rated to 125 C) that is commonly used in many commercial logging tools.

PG and E Geysers Retrofit Project: Milestone Report No. 1

Description: Rogers Engineering was contracted to determine the technical feasibility and cost/benefit ratios for Pacific Gas and Electric Company to replace the iron-catalyst/peroxide/ caustic systems with surface condensers and Stretford H{sub 2}S abatement systems for Units 1 through 12 at the Geysers. This Milestone No.1 Report is a 6 week progress report and will not have the cost benefit analyses which is planned for in the Final Report. This report will focus only on Units 1 and-3, which are thought of as typical to Units 2 and 4 in our contract. The work performed analyzes the cooling water cycle for both units and determines the turbine operating back pressure as a function of cold water from the existing cooling towers to the new surface condensers. Any power penalty is noted and assessed to the respective turbine-generator with necessary definition for the reason in heat rate deterioration. The direction of Rogers Engineering Co.'s efforts was the conceptual system analysis for Units 1 and 3. But cooling tower performance differences between Units 1 and 2 influenced the similarity of, the cycle thermodynamics and power output at the generator for these two units. We therefore are reporting on Units One and Two. Units Three and Four are identical with some minor location and piping.

Description: From abstract: The existing locks at Locks and Dam No. 1 were constructed between 1929 and 1932. Problems have been experienced with accumulation of ice and debris at the intakes, air entrapment in the culverts of the filling and emptying system, excessive turbulence in the lock chamber during filling, and hazardous conditions downstream from the locks during emptying operations.
