An Autunite Deposit in the Rosamond Hills, Kern County, California

Description: From introduction: An autunite deposit in the SW 1/4 sec. 25, T. 10 N., R. 13 W. San Bernardino meridian, was visited by F. M. Chace on May 6 and 15, 1950. The deposit is about 100 yards west of a north-south country road and is at an altitude of approximately 2,775 feet. The autunite-bearing tuffaceous sandstone strikes N. 35-40 W. and dips 20 -25 SW. It has been traced about 40 feet along the strike at the base of the outcrop and for about 20 feet up the dip. Insufficient work was done to give an accurate idea of the size of the deposit or to determine if other autunite-bearing beds are present.

Geology of the Kettleman Hills Oil Field, California: Stratigraphy, Paleontology, and Structure

Description: From Introduction: The field work that furnished the basis for this report was begun in 1930 and was continued at intervals until 1934. The anticlinal character of the Kettleman Hills is apparent to even the casual observer, but the many structural complications due to an intricate network of minor faults, at least in North Dome and Middle Dome, are much less obvious. Though it is improbable that these faults have any relation to the occurrence of oil, an attempt was made to map them, not only to represent the structure adequately but also because the stratigraphy could not be understood if they were neglected. Faunal zones were particularly useful in mapping. On the other hand, some lithologic units proved to be more persistent than had been expected. The two sets of features-fossils and lithology-served as checks on each other.

Spirit Leveling in South Carolina: Part 2. Southern South Carolina, 1896-1938

Description: From introduction: This bulletin, which is published in two parts, contains the complete results of all spirit leveling done in South Carolina by the Geological Survey of the United States Department of the Interior, including those heretofore published.' The 34th parallel of latitude, passing through Columbia, serves to divide the State into two sections, each of which is represented by one of the parts of the bulletin. Part 1 deals with the section lying north of the 34th parallel, designated as northern South Carolina, and part 2 deals with the section lying south of that parallel, designated as southern South Carolina. In each part descriptions of the points for which figures of elevation have been determined are listed according to the quadrangles in which the points occur, and the quadrangles are arranged in alphabetic order.

Flow around wings accompanied by separation of vortices

Description: The flow around wings computed by the usual method leads in the case of a finite trailing edge to a stagnation point in the trailing edge due to the Kutta-Joukowsky condition of flow governing this region. As a result, the theoretical pressure distribution differs substantially from the experimental values in the vicinity of the trailing edge. The present report describes an alternative method of calculation in which the rear stagnation point no longer appears. The stream leaves the trailing edge tangentially on the pressure side and a similar tangential separation occurs on the suction side of the profile at a point slightly in front of the trailing edge.

Internal-flow systems for aircraft

Description: An investigation has been made to determine efficient arrangements for an internal-flow system of an aircraft when such a system operates by itself or in combination with other flow systems. The investigation included a theoretical treatment of a problem and tests in the NACA 5-foot vertical wind tunnel of inlet and outlet openings in a flat plate and in a wing. When an internal-flow system tends to decrease the final velocity of it's wake, the results showed that it should be arranged in series with the propulsive system; the inlet opening should be located at a forward stagnation point; and the outlet opening should be so shaped and located as to recover the kinetic energy of the jet without increasing the drag of other portions of the aircraft. When an internal-flow system tends to increase the final velocity new b's wake, as does a propeller, location of the inlet opening in the boundary layer or in the wake of the wing or in the fuselage may be desirable.

An investigation of sheet-stiffener panels subjected to compression loads with particular reference to torsionally weak stiffeners

Description: A total of 183 panel specimens of 24ST aluminum alloy with nominal thickness of 0.020, and 0.040 inch with extruded bulb-angle sections of 12 shapes spaced 4 and 5 inches as stiffeners were tested to obtain the buckling stress and the amplitude of the maximum wave when buckled. Bulb angles from 3 to 27 1/2 inches long were tested as pin-end columns. The experimental data are presented as stress-strain and column curves and in tabular form. Some comparisons with theoretical results are presented. Analytical methods are developed that make it possible for the designer to predict with reasonable accuracy the buckling stress and the maximum-wave amplitude of the sheet in stiffened-panel combinations. The scope of the tests was insufficient to formulate general design criteria but the results are presented as a guide for design and an indication of the type of theoretical and experimental work that is needed.

A new method of studying the flow of the water along the bottom of a model of a flying-boat hull

Description: A new method of studying the flow of the water along the bottom of a model of a flying-boat hull is described. In this method, the model is fitted with a transparent bottom and is divided down the center line by a bulkhead. The flow is observed and photographed through one-half of the model by means of the diffused illumination from a battery of lamps contained in the other half of the model. Photographs of the flow, particularly of the changes that occur when the step ventilates, are shown. The results of the present investigation indicate that the method has considerable promise, chiefly in connection with motion-picture studies.

New equipment for testing the fatigue strength of riveted and welded joints

Description: The mechanical and electrical construction of a new experimental instrument for fatigue testing riveted and welded joints is described. This experimental device has the advantage of being able to stress, even with comparatively low magnetic exciter force, structural components in alternate bending by resonance vibrations up to incipient fatigue failure.

The problem of cooling an air-cooled cylinder on an aircraft engine

Description: An analysis of the cooling problem has been to show by what means the cooling of an air-cooled aircraft engine may be improved. Each means of improving cooling is analyzed on the basis of effectiveness in cooling with respect to power for cooling. The altitude problem is analyzed for both supercharged and unsupercharged engines. The case of ground cooling is also discussed. The heat-transfer process from the hot gases to the cylinder wall is discussed on the basis of the fundamentals of heat transfer and thermodynamics. Adiabatic air-temperature rise at a stagnation point in compressible flow is shown to depend only on the velocity of flow.

Pressure-distribution investigation of an NACA 0009 airfoil with an 80-percent-chord plain flap and three tabs

Description: Pressure-distribution tests of an NACA 0009 airfoil with an 80-percent-chord plain flap and three plain tabs, having chord of 10, 20, and 30 percent of the flap chord, were made. Section data suitable for application to the design of horizontal and vertical tail surfaces were obtained. Resultant-pressure diagrams for the airfoil with the flap and the 20-percent-chord tab are presented. Plots are also given of increments of normal-force and hinge-moment coefficients for the airfoil, the flap, and the three tabs. A comparison of some characteristic slopes for the 30-, the 50-, and the 80-percent-chord flaps, tested in the general investigation of plain flaps for control surfaces, is included. Section aerodynamic and load data have been made available for a wide range of flap and a tab chords to be used on an NACA 0009 airfoil or on other conventional sections.

Pressure and temperature measurement in supercharger investigations

Description: With the further development of the supercharger, requirements with regard to measuring accuracy increase while at the same time the conditions under which the measurements must be carried out become more difficult. The present paper is a contribution toward the improvement and refinement of the measuring methods. For pressure measurements some suggestions are made with regard to design and location of the measuring stations. The question of temperature measurement in rapid air flow is discussed, new instruments for the direct measurement of the temperature in the rapid airstream are described and the results obtained with the various instruments presented.

Preliminary wind-tunnel investigation of an NACA 23012 airfoil with various arrangements of venetian-blind flaps

Description: Report presents the results of an investigation made in the NACA 7 by 10-foot wind tunnel of a large-chord NACA 23012 airfoil with several arrangements of venetian-blind flaps to determine the aerodynamic section characteristics as affected by the over-all flap chord, the chords of the slats used to form the flap, the slat spacing, the number of slats and the position of the flap with respect to the wing. Complete section data are given in the form of graphs for all the combinations tested.

The lead susceptibility of fuels and its dependence on the chemical composition

Description: The fact that by the use of tetraethyl lead a number of otherwise unsuitable fuels could be made to meet engine requirements was not sufficiently appreciated. While use of tetraethyl lead is limited, the addition of special leaded fuels that increase the octane number is a requirement for many fuels. In this connection, the extent to which the action of tetraethyl lead through the addition of knock-resistant hydrocarbons to the base gasoline is influenced, is quite important. To the elucidation of this problem and of the storage stability of leaded fuels, the present report is dedicated.

Longitudinal stability and control with special reference to slipstream effects

Description: Report presents the results of a study of data obtained in the NACA full-scale wind tunnel concerning the effects of interference and of propeller operation on longitudinal stability and control. The data include pitching moments for various power conditions for airplanes with tails removed and with tails set at various stabilizer and elevator angles. A number of surveys of the dynamic pressure and the flow direction in the region of the horizontal tail surface are also included. Results are given for eight airplanes, including a model of a four-engine airplane tested both as a tractor and as a pushed and a model of two-engine pusher. The effects are shown of propeller operation on the downwash angles and the dynamic pressures at the tail and on the pitching-moment contribution of the propeller and the wing.

Measured moments of inertia of 32 airplanes

Description: A compilation of the experimentally determined moments of inertia of 32 airplanes is presented. The measurements were obtained at the laboratories of the naca by means of a pendulum method. The airplanes tested are representative of several types of aircraft of gross weight less than 10,000 pounds. The results are presented in coefficient as well as in dimensional form. An elementary analysis of the data disclosed the possibility of grouping the results according to wing type of the airplane, as low-wing monoplanes, parasol and high-wing monoplanes, and biplanes. The data are shown to provide a convenient means of rapidly estimating the moments of inertia of other airplanes. A three view drawing of each of the 32 airplanes is included.
