Mission Bay Harbor, California, Design for Wave and Surge Protection and Flood Control: Hydraulic Model Investigation

Description: Partial abstract: A 1:100-scale (undistorted) hydraulic model, reproducing Mission Bay Harbor, approximately 3 miles of shoreline, and sufficient offshore area to permit generation of the required test waves, was used to investigate the arrangement and design of proposed structures for (a) improving hazardous entrance conditions, (b) reducing surge inside the harbor, and (c) eliminating potential flood hazards. The original proposal for harbor improvement consisted of a 2,200-ft-long offshore breakwater. The proposed structures for river flood control consisted of (a) a 1,200-ft-long weir in the middle jetty, (b) various south jetty extensions, and (c) diversion dikes on the middle jetty.

Marysville Lake Hydrothermal Study: Report 2

Description: Partial abstract: "This study was conducted to determine the effect that the proposed Marysville Lake pump-storage hydropower (2250-mw power plant) project would have on downstream water temperatures. A one-dimensional numerical model was used for simulation and prediction of temperatures within and downstream of Marysville Lake. Two physical hydraulic models were used for study and description of the hydrodynamic response of the project. Information from the physical models was necessary to determine coefficients used by algorithms within the mathematical model."

Isabella Dam Spillway, Kern River, California: Hydraulic Model Investigation

Description: Abstract: "Tests were conducted on a 1:50-scale model of Isabella Dam Spillway to determine the adequacy of proposed spillway, dam, and channel improvements. The model reproduced an area of the reservoir 800 ft wide by 1,100 ft long, the spillway, and the entire length of the exit channel. Unsatisfactory flow conditions were observed in the vicinity of the spillway crest due to approach conditions to the spillway. Large cross waves, present in the exit channel just downstream of the spillway, resulted in occasional overtopping of the right wall. A grouted rock dike that provided satisfactory flow conditions at the spillway and downstream throughout the exit channel was placed adjacent to the existing spillway approach wall."

The Ecology of Stream and Riparian Habitats of the Great Basin Region

Description: "The purpose of this profile is to summarize the ecological information available for and relevant to stream and riparian habitats of the Great Basin. The Great Basin comprises the northern half of the Basin and Range physiographic province and covers most of Nevada and western Utah and portions of California, Oregon, and Idaho. The entire basin actually consists of numerous subbasins and mountain ranges which present an extremely diverse physical setting" (p. iii).

[Evolution of Sedimentary Basins/Onshore Oil and Gas Investigations--Santa Maria Province: Chapters Y and Z]

Description: From abstract: A complex Neogene history characterizes the offshore Santa Maria basin and the northwest margin of the western Transverse Ranges, California. This history includes the transition from subduction to a transtensional and then transpressional plate boundary, including about 900 of clockwise rotation of the western Transverse Ranges. This report uses seismic reflection data to document the geometry of structures that accommodated this deformation and offshore well data to date and correlate the sediments which were affected by the different tectonic episodes.

Geologic Summary of the Central Valley of California with Reference to the Disposal of Radioactive Waste

Description: From introduction: This report describes the geology of the area only to the extent necessary for preliminary evaluation of the possibilities for the disposal of liquid radioactive waste by injection through deep wells. Their value will increase with development of extensive commercial production of atomic power and attendant creation of radioactive waste from the processing of spent fuel elements. The disposal of liquid waste in deep reservoirs is only one of several possibilities that must be considered.

Shorter Contributions to General Geology, 1929

Description: From introduction: This report describes the deposits of analcite in the Green River formation, to compare them with other similar deposits, and to present them with other similar deposits, and to present the observations and inferences that led him to explain them as alteration products of volcanic ash that fell into an ancient saline lake. The report also records the occurrence of several thin beds of sepiolite, or meerschaum, in the Green River formation and presents new data on the molds of saline minerals of the Green River formation whose determination affects directly the interpretation of the analcite and sepiolite deposits.

OSHA State Plans: In Brief, with Examples from California and Arizona

Description: This report examines various state plans under the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970 (OSH Act), which authorizes states to establish their own occupational safety and health plans and preempt standards established and enforced by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA). OSHA must approve state plans if they are "at least as effective" as OSHA's standards and enforcement. The report provides specific examples from California and Arizona

Description: From Introduction: "This volume contains the descriptions of the samples whose analyses are published in the preceding volume, Part I of this bulletin. The descriptions have been compiled from the notebooks of the persons who collected the samples, have been condensed from accounts given in published reports of the United States Geological Survey, or have furnished by the collection themselves. Inasmuch as the descriptions represent the work of many persons during a period of six years, and inasmuch as they were recorded under widely differing conditions, they necessarily vary in fullness detail."
