Characterization of Dredged River Sediments in 10 Upland Disposal Sites of Alabama

Description: Abstract: The U.S. Bureau of Mines, Tuscaloosa Research Center, in cooperation with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers under interagency Agreement No. 14-09-0078-1510, conducted a comprehensive sampling program of 10 upland disposal sites along the Alabama, Black Warrior, and Tombigbee River systems in Alabama. Samples from each site were characterized according to particle size, chemical analysis, mineralogical content, and potential end use. Additionally, samples were subjected to the Toxic Characteristic Leachate Procedure to determine the presence of potentially harmful heavy metals. Based on the results of these studies, each sample was determined to have properties amenable for use as aggregate in general-purpose portland cement concretes and certain asphalt concrete applications.

Uranium in the Southern United States

Description: From introduction: In this study on raw material sources of uranium the Southern Interstate Nuclear Board has catalogued all known occurrences of uranium and some references to thorium in a 17-state area (P1. 1). These occurrences have been evaluated as potential sources of uranium by the State Geological Surveys and the consultant group of SINB. Favorability guides have been applied to the known occurrences and recommendations have been made for future action by the states involved, federal agencies, or by industry. State recommendations are included in state-by-state summaries. The state reports were written either by personnel of the State Geological Surveys or were abstracted from State geological survey data by members of the consultant group...The purpose of this study was to compile information on and systematically assess uranium and other radioactive occurrences in the region. The SINB undertook the project because of its statutory, interstate capability as an extension of government in each of the 17 states, an arrangement that lends itself effectively to this cooperative undertaking.

Base Flow of Streams in the Outcrop Area of Southeastern Sand Aquifer: South Carolina, Georgia, Alabama, and Mississippi

Description: From purpose and scope: The purpose of this study are to derive base flow estimates for representative parts of the Cretaceous and Tertiary clastic outcrop area as an aid in estimating recharge to the sand aquifers; to use base flow relations to estimate aquifer hydraulic parameters; and to relate the lithology of the aquifer to the streamflow duration curves.

Hydrology of Selected Basins in the Warrior Coal Field, Alabama -- A Progress Report

Description: Abstract: Hydrologic data are being collected in four basins in the Warrior coal field to provide baseline information to aid in determining the effect mining will have on water resource Basins monitored are in two different geologic and hydrologic environments. Well yields from the Pottsville Formation generally range from 0 to 0.3 L/s, whereas well yields from the Coker Formation generally range from 0.3 L/s to 6.4 L/s. Streamflow distribute reflects seasonal precipitation. Streams draining basins underlain chiefly by the Pottsville Formation frequently go dry, whereas those draining basins underlain chiefly by the Coker Formation have well sustained low flows. Water in the Pottsville Formation is slightly acidic and moderately hard to very hard. Dissolved solids concentrations ranged from 176 to 268 mg/L. Water in the Coker Formation is soft, far less mineralized and more acidic than water in the Pottsville. Surface water is generally soft, acidic, and low in dissolved solids concentrations. Water in streams draining basins underlain chiefly by the Pottsville Formation was slightly more mineralized and less acidic than water in streams draining the Coker Formation.

Results of a Test Well in the Nanafalia Formation Near Melvin, Choctaw County, Alabama

Description: Purpose and scope: The purpose of this report is to assemble and present hydrologic and geologic data collected by the U.S. Geological Survey during the drilling and testing of the test well. Hydrogeologic data collected are presented in tables, graphs, and diagrams. These data include lithologic, geophysical, and sample logs, and the results of aquifer tests and chemical analyses of ground water.

Injury Experience in the Coking Industry, 1951

Description: From Introduction and Summary: "Reports from operating companies showed that 25,715 men worked at coke ovens in 1951, about 6 percent more than were employed in 1950 and, except in 1943, the largest work force since 1930, when 28,139 men were employed. The work time for all employees was 70,190,493 man-hours. The returns indicated an average of 344 work days per man as compared with 341 days in the previous year. Accidents at the ovens resulted in the death of 10 and injury to 768 workers, both of these figures representing fewer injuries than in 1950."
