Trafficability of Soils: Effects of Surface Conditions on Drawbar Pull of a Wheeled Vehicle

Description: "A study was conducted to (a) investigate the effects of soil surface conditions on one-pass drawbar pull capabilities of a wheeled vehicle, (b) relate optimum drawbar pull to soil strength as measured by several instruments, (c) develop tentative equations for predicting optimum tractive coefficient, and (d) determine effects of tire characteristics (tread pattern and deflection) on drawbar pull. One hundred and six drawbar pullslip tests were conducted with a 3/4-ton M37 truck at a gross weight of 7240 lb. One tire size (9.00-16, 8-PR), two tread patterns (smooth and nondirectional military), and two tire deflections (15% and 35%) were tested. Surface conditions varied from dry and firm, to wetted with small amounts of water, to flooded. Asphalt surfaces also were tested" (p. xi).

X-ray emission from laser-produced plasmas

Description: The intensity and spectral characteristics of x-ray emitted from laser-produced plasmas have been investigated computatinoally and experimentally. a two-dimensional implosi code was used successfully to calculate laser-plasma radiation characteristics and to aid in the design of laser targets for high-yield x-ray production. Other computer codes, in use or under development predict lime strengths and energies for laser-plasma x-ray emission. An experimental effort is aimed at reliable measurements of x-ray yields and spectra. a wide variety of x-ray detection methods have been evaluated, and x-ray yields have been measured from plasmas produced with two dissimilar laser systems. The high energy x-ray spectrum, from about 10 to 140 keV, has been studied using high-gain scintillatino detectors and thick K-edge filters. Various supplementary measurements have provided information concerning characteristics of the target-reflected laser light, the ion energies, and the laser intensity patterns.

Earthquake Resistance of Earth and Rock-Fill Dams, Report 2: Analysis of Response of Rifle Gap Dam to Project Rulison Underground Nuclear Detonation

Description: Summary: The motion of Rifle Gap Dam was measured in September 1969 during the Project RULISON underground nuclear explosion. The observed response was then compared with the response computed in a mathematical model. Observed and computed responses were similar. From this study it appears that the mathematical models used are applicable to the design and analysis of soil structures, at least for ground motion intensities comparable to those observed at Rifle Gap Dam. An Analytical Model for Predicting Cross-Country Vehicle Performance, Appendix D: Performance of Amphibious Vehicles in the Water-Land Interface (Hydrologic Geometry)

Description: Summary: "Forty tests were conducted with two amphibious tracked vehicles and one amphibious wheeled vehicle at Eglin Air Force Base, Fla., and near Khon Kaen, Thailand, to determine the vehicles' capabilities for exiting closed bodies of water. Empirical relations, based on the data collected in this study and in previous studies, are presented to support the conclusions that performance of amphibious tracked and wheeled vehicles (in terms of "go-no go") in the water-land interface can be correlated with soil strength (expressed as average cone index of the 0- to 6-in. soil layer), and that the slope-climbing ability in the water-land interface of the tracked vehicles tested compares favorably with that of the same vehicles operating on land surfaces of similar soil composition and consistency" (p. ix).
