Decomposition of Water at High Temperatures and Pressures Under Reactor Irradiation

Description: Partial abstract: "The investigation of the high temperature and pressure dissociation of water under irradiation was undertaken by the Power Pile Division of Oak Ridge National Laboratory in an effort to determine the degree of importance of the phenomenon with respect to the design of a high temperature water-cooled power reactor. Theory and past experimentation indicate that net steady-state dissociation is determined by the rates of the dissociation and recombination reactions under the imposed conditions, the dissociation rate being essentially a function of flux and the recombination rate essentially a function of temperature" (p. 3).

Levee Underseepage Analysis for Special Foundation Conditions

Description: This report describes a research study in which techniques were developed for prediction of underseepage conditions for special cases of levee and foundation geometry. The differential equations for levee underseepage were derived and programmed in finite difference form for three special cases of boundary conditions. The developed programs allow analyses that are not restricted to the boundary conditions assumed in the conventional, closed form solution, i.e., two foundation layers of uniform thickness with horizontal boundaries.

State-of-the-Art for Assessing Earthquake Hazards in the United States, Report 25: Parameters for Specifying Intensity-Related Earthquake Ground Motions

Description: Abstract: "A set of 12 charts are presented that relate Modified Mercalli intensity units to peak horizontal acceleration, velocity and duration for near field and far field locations, hard and soft sites, and sizes of earthquakes. Also shown is the mean, mean plus one standard deviation, mean plus two standard deviations, and the highest observed values. Ratios are provided of vertical to horizontal motions and predominant periods. These charts are for use with known fault sources and for floating earthquakes in zones where there are no identifiable causative faults. The procedure provides parameters for shaping time histories to be used for dynamic analyses."

A Field Test of Selected Insects and Pathogens for Control of Waterhyacinths, Report 1: Preliminary Results for the 1975-76 Season

Description: "During the growing season of 1975, a field experiment was initiated on Lake Concordia, Louisiana, to test the potential effectiveness of selected organisms as control agents against waterhyacinths, Eichhornia crassipes (Mart.) Solms. [...] This report describes the experiment, presents the collected data, and summarizes the observations. Statistical analyses and interpretation of the data are also presented" (abstract).

Shutdown of the Federal Government: Causes, Effects, and Process

Description: This report provides a brief overview of the causes and effects of federal government shutdowns. This report provides a brief overview of the causes and effects of federal government shutdowns. When federal agencies and programs lack appropriated funding, they must cease operations, except in emergency situations. The failure of the President and Congress to reach agreement on funding measures has caused government shutdowns. It is necessary either to enact temporary funding legislation at the close of the fiscal year or to shut down the activities that are not funded at that time.
