Notes on Eastern Oil Shale Drilling

Description: Purpose: The primary objective of the eastern oil shale drilling was to obtain cores of the Chattanooga shale, from considerable depths and at long distances from its outcrops. Correlation of the cores with outcrop samples showed the effect of weathering on the shale, as well as changes in the stratigraphy. Of secondary interest was acquisition of information on the stratigraphy of the overlying rocks.

Manganiferous and Ferruginous Chert in Perry and Lewis Counties, Tennessee

Description: From abstract: Perry and Lewis Counties, east of the Tennessee River, in west-middle Tennessee, are underlain by nearly flat-lying rocks of Paleozoic age, with Mississippian cherty limestones forming the greater part of the surface of the western Highland Rim Plateau ridges. Near the summits of the ridges there is a fairly definite horizon in the chert that contains manganese and iron oxides in varying degrees of concentration. Weathering of the mineralized chert has produced widespread float on the hill slopes and in the beds of small spring branches, and the presence of this float, some of it rich enough for metallurgical manganese ore, has encouraged a search for promising deposits in place. In the present study 52 localities where the mineralized beds crop out or have been prospected were examined.

Ground Water in Carbonate Rocks and Regolith in the Fairview Area, Tennessee

Description: From abstract: Fourteen test wells drilled in the Fairview area, Tennessee, produce from 3 to 100 gallons per minute and have an average yield of 32 gallons per minute; yields were measured while blowing water from the wells with compressed air. In comparison, the average yield of 134 supply wells reported by drillers is 13 gallons per minute. Specific capacities for three of the test wells ranged from 0.3 to 0.6 gallons per minute per foot of drawdown after 8 hours of pumping at 20 to 47 gallons per minute. Two test wells had specific capacities of 1.1 and 0.4 gallons per minute per foot of drawdown after 72 hours of pumping at 55 and 43 gallons per minute.

Uranium Content of Chattanooga Shale in East-Central Tennessee and Southern Kentucky

Description: From abstract: Uranium assays of all the samples collected by the Geological Survey from the Chattanooga shale in east-central Tennessee and southern Kentucky from 1947 to 1949 are assembled here, and conclusions are drawn concerning the distribution of the uranium. The 1108 assays from 80 localities provide reasonably reliable information on the stratigraphic and regional variations of the uranium content.

Historic Water-Level Changes and Pumpage from the Principal Aquifers of the Memphis Area, Tennessee: 1886-1975

Description: Abstract: Annual pumpage for both the Memphis Sand ("500-foot" sand) and Fort Pillow Sand ("1400-foot" sand) from the time of initial pumping from these aquifers to 1975 is presented in both tabular and graphic forms . The Memphis Sand supplied 188 million gallons per day in 1975 or 95 percent of the total water used in the area . Pumpage from the Fort Pillow Sand has decreased in recent years and in 1975 was about 4 million gallons per day. Pumping increases from the Memphis Sand have caused an almost continual decline of water levels as shown by graphs , tables, and a series of potentiometric-surface maps. Water-level-change maps show the fluctuations in water levels for two periods of high water use. Water levels in the Fort Pillow Sand are also shown by tables and graphs and a potentiometric-surface map . These graphs illustrate a rise of water levels since 1963, coincidental with pumping reductions. The data presented suggest that a constant pumping rate will cause little water-level decline and that the water levels can be altered for efficient resource management by areally varying the distribution of pumping . The references listed support the information presented in this report .
