AFNOL synthesis. Quarterly report, October--December, 1971

Description: Five batches of unplasticized AFNOL, each approximately one pound, were synthesized using 4,4-dinitropimelic acid as the starting material. Two 10 g batches were completed prior to the pound batches to assure the usability of the acid chloride. Characterization of each of the larger batches was by differential thermal analysis (DTA), infrared spectrophotometry (IR), and cure tests. Some characterization was also done on the commercial chemicals used in the synthesis.

ANFOL synthesis. [Quarterly report], April--June 1971

Description: A new method was developed for chlorination of 4,4-dinitropimelic acid with PCl{sub 5} using a Soxhlet extraction apparatus as the addition vessel. Acid used was that reclaimed from the purification of the crude acid chloride of 4,4-dinitropimelic acid supplied by LRL. Synthesis of FEFO plasticized AFNOL has been scaled up to a nominal 30-pound batch. Small batches and cure tests were run prior to the scaleup. Cure rate of the AFNOL system was followed by infrared spectrophotometry. The tempera… more

Calibration of a fluid for use in the aquarium technique from {minus}45 to +165 F. Quarterly report, April--June 1971

Description: In general, the distance-time history of a shock front moving through a transparent medium is obtained by the aquarium technique. Differentiation of the distance-time curve yields shock velocity information, and given the Hugoniot of the transparent medium, a pressure-time history may be calculated. Distilled water typically comprises the transparent medium for the aquarium technique, hence, desirable properties of the fluid to be selected were patterned after those of water. The aquarium techn… more

Calibration of a fluid for use in the aquarium technique from {minus}65 F to +165 F. Quarterly report, October--December, 1971

Description: The usefulness of the aquarium technique has been extended from {minus}65 F to +165 F by calibration of a fluid at four temperatures, {minus}65 F, {minus}45 F, room temperature and +165 F. Linear least square curves were derived from (U{sub s}, U{sub p})-data for each temperature. Listed Hugoniots are defined by equal slopes with intercepts at the longitudinal speed of sound for respective temperatures.

Compatibility of EXTEX with tetryl by thermal methods. Quarterly report, July--September, 1971

Description: A progress report is given on the study of the compatibility of XTX 8003 and tetryl. The 100 C coupon test samples were discarded after 8 weeks because of excessive decomposition. There is no indication of a compatibility problem of XTX with tetryl as long as they are in a solid phase. The 80 C coupon test evaluations are continuing.

Compatibility of Extex with tetryl by thermal methods. Quarterly report, October--December, 1971

Description: A final report is given on the study of the compatibility of Extex and tetryl. The 100 C coupon test samples were discarded after 8 weeks because of excessive decomposition. The 80 C coupon test evaluations have been completed and an analysis of the data made. There is no indication of a compatibility problem of Extex with tetryl as long as they are in a solid phase.

Corrosion effects of the interreaction of 6061 aluminum with aqueous mixtures and solutions of selected HE`s

Description: The behavior of several selected HE and HE-component materials in aqueous media in contact with 6061 aluminum has been studied via conductance, cathodic tendencies (cell EMF measurements), pH, and visual analysis (photomicrographs) of the 6061 electrodes and media contacts rods. Addition of orthophthalic acid (OPA) to the media was also made to study potential corrosive effects possibly due to some breakdown of the polyphthalate systems in contact with these materials. Overall assessment of dat… more

The detonation electric effect as applied to the MC-2453 driver subassembly. Quarterly report, July--September, 1971

Description: The detonation electric effect has been used for the purpose of measuring the change in transit time through the temperature range of {minus}45 to +165 F, in the MC-2453 driver subassembly. Ionization switches were applied to an additional sample of subassemblies in order to compare the transit time as measured by the detonation of electric effect and the ionization switches. Results of these tests are included in this report.

The detonation electric effect as applied to the MC-2453 driver subassembly. Quarterly report, October--December, 1971

Description: The detonation electric effect has been used to measure transit times of the MC-2453 driver subassemblies at 185 F, 212 F and room temperature after the units were subjected to a temperature of 232 F. The test procedure and the results are included in this report.

Detonation sphere. Quarterly report, April--June, 1971

Description: The final HE test for the fiscal year was conducted in the 4-foot detonation sphere in May. A 200 g charge of 2-4-6 trinitrotoluene (1 1/2-inch diameter x 4 1/2-inch long) was initiated. On initiation, the TNT charge failed to detonate but instead partial deflagration of the HE took place. The ensuing pressure rise (54 torr vs. {approximately} 120 torr expected) implied a partial detonation; nevertheless, sampling and evaluation at the detonation products was continued. After removal of the pro… more

Development of PEX explosives: Solid-liquid phase diagrams of energetic mixes. Quarterly report, July--September, 1971

Description: The solid-liquid phase diagrams of various binary mixtures of FEFO, BDNPA, EDNP and BDNPF are being studied. Temperatures at which a 0.025-inch probe penetrated the samples were measured. It appears that the samples had not crystallized but solidified into a glass.

Electromagnetic stress and velocity gages. Quarterly report July--September, 1971

Description: The installation of a new electromagnet to be used with the stress and velocity gages is discussed. The results obtained from a new gage designed to eliminate the anomalous signals reported last quarter are given. Using this gage, a comparison of the waveforms from the XMC 2361 driver and the MC 2453 driver subassembly was made; the difference between the two, as determined by the velocity gage, is negligible. Also reported are the results of an unsuccessful attempt to use the velocity gage to … more

Description: Four batches of experimental PETN have been made for incorporation into LX-13 (Extex). A control batch was reprecipitated in the conventional manner (shock reprecipitation from acetone into violently agitated water) while three batches were made in the Micronizer: Two of these were treated with MRL 22A.with one of the treated batches being heat stabilized for 8 hours at 116 C. Two 500-pound batches of RX-04-EC (4% Viton A) were made to supply material for the special studies of the effects of d… more

HE formulation. Quarterly report, October--December, 1971

Description: A freeze drying process has been developed which alleviates the caking of high surface area HE powders upon drying and yields a light fluffy textured powder. Three batches of high surface area PETN treated with a surface active agent and two batches of high surface area (Micronizer) RDX have been freeze dried. The RDX powder had a low bulk density of about 0.25 g/cc. Batch sizes ranging from 2 to 10 pounds or more can be easily processed. Samples of the RDX, along with Micronized PETN (surface … more
