Development of continuous glass melting for production of Nd-doped phosphate glasses for the NIF and LMJ laser system

Description: The NIF and LMJ laser systems require about 3380 and 4752 Nd-doped laser glass slabs, respectively. Continuous laser glass melting and forming will be used for the first time to manufacture these slabs. Two vendors have been chosen to produce the glass: Hoya Corporation and Schott Glass Technologies. The laser glass melting systems that each of these two vendors have designed, built and tested are arguably the most advanced in the world. Production of the laser glass will begin on a pilot scale in the fall of 1999.

An implicit method for hyperbolic conservation laws on meshes with small cells in one dimension

Description: In this paper we study a new method for solving hyperbolic conservation laws on a Cartesian mesh with some small cells. Our main task here is to devise a stable algorithm in the small zones. An algorithm proposed by Berger and LeVeque combines the small zones with neighboring zones and solves rotated Riemann problems. This method is very geometrically oriented. It requires knowledge of the areas of the small cells, as well as the areas of cells contained in various {open_quote}boxes{close_quotes} drawn from the edges of the small cells. Here we propose a more algebraic algorithm: we combine an implicit method with an explicit second-order conservative finite difference scheme. In section 2 the basic algorithm in one dimension is presented, as well as the slopes calculations and the iterative procedure. In section 3 we present some numerical results for the 1-D advection equation and the inviscid Burger`s equation.

The two-photon decay of 1s2s {sup 1}S{sup 0} states in heavy he-like atomic systems.

Description: In He-like systems the decay of the 1s2s {sup 1}S0 excited state to the 1s{sup 2} {sup 1}S0 ground state is not allowed. This excited state can only decay to the ground state via the emission of two photons. The spectral shape of the emitted continuum is determined by the complete structure of the atomic system as all bound and continuum P states contribute to the 2E1 decay. For very heavy atomic systems the {sup 3}P states ALSO have to be included and the normalized spectral shape changes with atomic number according to the relative strengths of both, the electron-electron interaction and of the relativistic effects. A brief survey on the variation of the spectral shape of the two-photon continuum with atomic number is given and compared to experiments ranging from He-like Ni to He-like Au with special emphasis on the heavy relativistic system. The data compare well with fully relativistic calculations.

A primary mission of the CNEA is to direct waste management activities for Argentina's nuclear industry.

Sampling and analysis plan for sampling of liquid waste streams generated by 222-S Laboratory Complex operations

Description: This Sampling and Analysis Plan (SAP) establishes the requirements and guidelines to be used by the Waste Management Federal Services of Hanford, Inc. personnel in characterizing liquid waste generated at the 222-S Laboratory Complex. The characterization process to verify the accuracy of process knowledge used for designation and subsequent management of wastes consists of three steps: to prepare the technical rationale and the appendix in accordance with the steps outlined in this SAP; to implement the SAP by sampling and analyzing the requested waste streams; and to compile the report and evaluate the findings to the objectives of this SAP. This SAP applies to portions of the 222-S Laboratory Complex defined as Generator under the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA). Any portion of the 222-S Laboratory Complex that is defined or permitted under RCRA as a treatment, storage, or disposal (TSD) facility is excluded from this document. This SAP applies to the liquid waste generated in the 222-S Laboratory Complex. Because the analytical data obtained will be used to manage waste properly, including waste compatibility and waste designation, this SAP will provide directions for obtaining and maintaining the information as required by WAC173-303.

Ventures in science Truman College. Final technical report, September 15, 1991--August 14, 1996

Description: This is the final report for a Venture in Science program begun in the summer of 1992 for a group of students just finishing the eighth grade, in the greater Chicago area. Students were chosen to participate in the program, and to serve as part of control groups as part of the evaluation of the effectiveness of the program. The program met on Saturdays throughout the school year, and had more extensive activities in the summer. Following almost a two year no-cost extension, students are still involved with each other, and with program teachers on a regular basis, pursuing development of the general program goals.
