The Comparative Effectiveness of Conventional and Programed Instructional Procedures in Teaching Fundamentals of Music

Description: The purpose of this study was to investigate the comparative effectiveness of three out-of-class procedures designed to augment a conventional classroom instructional method in a course in the fundamentals of music for elementary education students. The procedures examined were (a) conventional out-of-class study assignments; (b) out-of-class individual use of a programed textbook; and (c) out-of- class individual use of a teaching machine program. This study was concerned with measures of achievement in fundamentals of music as taught to elementary education students at North Texas State University, Denton, Texas, during the 1963-1964 school year. The measures of achievement in music were limited to the pre-test of fundamentals of music and to the post test, interim test, and retention test of fundamentals of music.

Behavioral Outcomes of Client-Centered Play Therapy

Description: This study was concerned with determining the effectiveness of play therapy as measured by behavioral changes in interpersonal relationships, mature behavior patterns, and more adequate use of intellectual capacities. Client-centered play therapy appears to have grown out of the concept that it is the relationship between the therapist and the child that brings about change and growth. Rather than diagnostic or as preliminary to therapy, the relationship itself is seen as therapy. Problems are seen not in terms of their historical past, but rather as they exist in the immediate present and in terms of the child's own means of expression. The relationship offers to the child the opportunity to experience growth under the most favorable conditions. Like its adult counterpart, client-centered counseling, client-centered play therapy is based upon the hypotheses that the individual has within himself the capacity for growth and self-direction, and that these growth impulses are released within the therapeutic relationship established between the therapist and the child. This study was conducted to investigate changes in behavior which occur as a result of play therapy and to determine that such changes do not occur in the absence of play therapy. It was a direct outgrowth of an ongoing program developed at the Pupil Appraisal Center of North Texas.

A Course in Freshman English Composition Based on Theories of Creativity

Description: Today's colleges and universities are faced with the challenges of reforming their curriculums in an effort to hold a generation of students who are now demanding more than just a degree. Today prominent writers in the field of higher education point to the necessity of assessing and reconstructing college courses so that new direction will be provided. Each student entering college for the first time usually must enroll in an English composition course. Such a course offers great potential to encourage the creative capacity of the incoming student and foster an attitude of personal inquiry. The diversity of subjects and intentions which can be introduced in the beginning composition course offers a healthy reservoir of opportunity for exploring personal meaning. Introducing some of the goals and concepts of creativity may thus inspire the design of a new course given to meeting the challenges of higher education.The problem of this study was to develop a course in freshman English composition based on the theories of creativity and directed towards the development of the student's creative and critical capacity.

The Relationship of Educational Achievement to the Role-Concept of Women

Description: The problem of this investigation was an analysis of selected variables that affected woman's role-concept. Specifically this research was concerned with how a woman's role-concept was influenced by education. This research concluded that the level of education influenced role-concept. Respondents with more than a high school education were very contemporary. Other variable such as marital status, age, parental views, ethnic group, and major seemed to have little effect on role-concept. All groups surveyed were more contemporary than traditional. Further research to determine if all women are becoming contemporary would be meaningful.

A Comparison of the Self-Concepts of Negroes and Jews

Description: The purpose of this study was to compare self-concepts of Negroes and Jews. The historical background conditions influencing the development of the Jews and Negroes are beyond the scope of this work and are therefore mentioned only incidentally. Two aspects of these two groups are under consideration: (1) How well or poorly do Jews and Negroes function in contemporary American society? (2) What sort of family life is characteristic of Jews and Negroes? These two aspects are considered important in connection with self-concepts, for the first is at least in part a manifestation of the self-concept, and family life is considered important as the major factor in the development of the self-concept. The self-concept and its development are treated more fully in a later part of this paper.

A Proposed Guidance Program for Electra High School

Description: The problem of this study is to develop a functional plan for organizing, initiating, and administering a sound guidance program in the Electra, Texas, High School. Major emphasis has been placed upon a multidimensional guidance service in order that the optimum measure of guidance can be provided for all pupils in accordance with their needs. In order to plan a guidance program adapted to the needs of the particularly designated group of boys and girls, it was deemed necessary to discover their needs as much as possible, in a short period of time, by testing student opinion and knowledge. Another specific problem of the study is to survey the opinions of authorities in the field of guidance and personnel so as to determine what they think constitutes a sound guidance program in a secondary school. Thus, the problem of the writer resolves itself into a threefold undertaking, as follows: 1. To determine the guidance needs of the pupils of Electra High School. 2. To establish a set of criteria of soundness for a guidance program in a secondary school. The criteria are to be based upon the opinions of several authorities in the field of guidance. 3. To set up a proposed guidance program for Electra High School.

Dogmatism as Related to Anxiety and Self-Ideal Discrepancy

Anxiety Levels of Creative, Performing Musicians

Description: The term creativity will be used in this paper to denote the unique imposition of the personality upon, in this case, the instrument selected and the work performed. The result of the creativity, the performance, is in the indefinable but, to a competent judge, readily recognizable area of true artistry, and represents, at best, a spontaneity resulting from interaction with unconscious processes after the conscious mastery of the technical problems of the particular instrument. For the purposes of this study, May's definition of anxiety is as good and workable as any: "Anxiety is the apprehension cued off by a threat to some value which the individual holds essential to his existence as a personality. In the case of the musician, the threatened value is his desire (and necessity, in terms of his self concept) to pursue music as a career. When his career is threatened or depreciated, the result is anxiety, which manifests itself in various forms of irrational behavior, physical symptoms, and inadequate adjustments to everyday situations.

An Analysis of the Background Data of Fifty Students Who Failed in the College of Home Economics, Syracuse University

Description: The problem of academic failure has been of real concern to the administration and faculty at Syracuse University. The study at hand is concerned specifically with the problem in the College of Home Economics. Through a study of the data known about students at the time of entrance into the College, it was thought that a better basis for selection night be recommended for the admission of students to the College. Such questions as the following arise in the mind of the research worker: 1. Do the group psychological tests given at the University at the time of entrance give us one basis by which we may predict probable academic success or failure? 2. Are the known high school quartiles dependable bases for selection of successful students? 3. Are there factors in the family backgrounds of these students that.may be significant in their selection? 4. Does an objective personality test have validity as a predictive factor in the success of a student? 5. Do we have any anecdotal records that reveal significant differences in personal adjustment between successful and failed students? 6. Are we able to predict the probable success of failed students upon readmission? 7. Do we have any combination of factors that may be significant in predicting the probable success of a student?

Maladjustment and the Distortion of Self-Perception

Description: Contemporary psychology has shown an increasing interest in the self-concept of the individual. This interest has grown in large measure from studies of perception. Many theorists have felt that perception in general and self-perception in particular is a function of the needs of the organism, as well as a function of the external stimuli. Perseverance in Children

Description: The purpose of this study was to measure perseverance time as related to the individual's need for achievement, past success or failure, the difficulty of a task, and the experimenter's instructions regarding its difficulty. The subjects used in this study were twenty-eight children, fifteen males and thirteen females, who ranged in age from eight years, six months to nineteen years and nine months, with the mean chronological age being twelve years and ten months.

Characteristics of Groups Taught Under Two Social Climates

A Conceptual Validation Study of the Rorschach Indicators of Creativity

Description: The major theoretical position of this study was that the cognitive functioning of the creative individual, as compared with the non-creative normal, is characterized by the greater availability of mature operations as these operations are defined by the Rorschach. It was assumed that the "creative individual" is free to use his imaginal processes to enrich his perception of the world. This study recognized that the perception of good Gestalten of the world is a function of the perceiver, his needs, defense mechanisms, integration, and the characteristics of the stimulus-field. When the stimulus is ambiguous, as it is in the Rorschach, the perceiver has to draw on his own resources more heavily than if the stimulus was structured.

Projective Use of Human-Figure Drawings

Description: The first aspect of the problem of this study is to investigate a number of drawing characteristics, the interpretation of which is frequently associated with dynamics of the maladjusted personality. This investigation is primarily concerned with validity as it occurs in a significant appearance of these characteristics in the drawings of maladjustedd individuals as compared with an assumed significantly lesser appearance in the drawings of relatively well-adjusted individuals. The second aspect of the problem is concerned with distinguishing those characteristics which show the greatest significance of occurrence from those of no significant occurrence in the maladjusted group. The former can be, thus, considered as possibly valid and important for further testing.

The Effects of Memory Load on the Accuracy of Recognition of Stimuli

The Administration of the Guidance Program for Secondary Schools
