Review of literature on catalytic recombination of hydrogen--oxygen. [Removal of hydrogen from containment atmosphere following LWR blowdown]

Description: The results are reported of a literature search for information concerning the heterogeneous, gas phase, catalytic hydrogen-oxygen recombination. Laboratory scale experiments to test the performance of specific metal oxide catalysts under conditions simulating the atmosphere within a nuclear reactor containment vessel following a loss-of-coolant blowdown accident are suggested.

GAS CHROMATOGRAPHIC SYSTEM FOR FFTF FAILED FUEL DETECTION AND LOCATION - STATE-OF-THE-ART REPORT

Description: A review of the present state-of-the-art in the areas of gas chromatography, radiochemical counting and inert cover gas sampling reveals that : 1, The chromatographic approach to fuel failure detection and locatlon is technically feasible and holds promise of having distinct advantages over existing methods. 2, Considerable knowledge which is directly applicable to the problem exists and therefore the research and development costs required will be modest, 3. Existfng knowledge indicates that t… more

Final Report on Grant DE-FG03-02ER63470

Description: The goal of this project is to provide critical information to characterize the qualitative and quantitative similarities and difference in repair characteristics between clustered damage sites formed by ionizing radiation and singly damaged sites produced by endogenous processes. The premise is that base pairing and base stacking interactions are qualitatively and quantitatively different for singly and multiply damaged DNA sites. State-of-the-art computational chemistry model were used to cha… more

Production of S{sub 2}F{sub 10}, S{sub 2}OF{sub 10} and S{sub 2}O{sub 2}F{sub 10} by spark discharges in SF{sub 6}*

Description: Measurements have been made of the spark yield of S{sub 2}F{sub 10} and S{sub 2}OF{sub 10} as a function of O{sub 2} and H{sub 2}O concentration. In addition the formation of S{sub 2}O{sub 2}F{sub 10} is reported. The spark yield of S{sub 2}F{sub 10} is reduced when either oxygen or water is added to SF{sub 6}. On the other hand the yield of S{sub 2}OF{sub 10} is increased when either oxygen or water is added, oxygen having the greater effect. A simple model is presented based on a common SF{su… more

Precision volume measurement system.

Description: A new precision volume measurement system based on a Kansas City Plant (KCP) design was built to support the volume measurement needs of the Gas Transfer Systems (GTS) department at Sandia National Labs (SNL) in California. An engineering study was undertaken to verify or refute KCP's claims of 0.5% accuracy. The study assesses the accuracy and precision of the system. The system uses the ideal gas law and precise pressure measurements (of low-pressure helium) in a temperature and computer cont… more

Rugged miniaturized mass sensors for use in plutonium conversion processes

Description: Ionization is produced either through Plasma Desorption, in the case of a solid, using fission fragments from a Cf-252 source; or in the case of a gas, via an electron avalanche from the impact on a microsphere detector of {alpha} particles from a radioactive source. The gaseous compound analysis yielded multiple peaks on parent ion and molecular fragments. In the solid compound analysis, the results indicated that solid-state mass spectrometry will provide important information about the degra… more

Hydrogen and methane synthesis through radiation catalysis. Final report

Description: The goal of this research was to evaluate the potential for using reactor wastes to synthesize useful products in quasi-photochemical configuration. It was found that semiconductor oxides act as heterogenous catalysts for the formation of H/sub 2/ in aqueous media under /sup 60/Co irradiation. The principle of a gamma-ray solar cell was demonstrated experimentally. Experiments with ultraviolet irradiated TiO/sub 2/ and ZnO grains demonstrated that both H/sub 2/ and H/sub 2/O/sub 2/ were formed,… more

Selective flotation of fossil resin from western coal. A special report comprising: Monthly report for December 1991--April 1992 and Quarterly reports for December 1, 1991--February 29, 1992

Description: The test program has demonstrated that: (1) technically, the new flotation technologies discovered at the University of Utah and then improved upon by Advanced Processing Technologies, Inc. provide a highly efficient means to selectively recover fossil resin from coal. The proof-of-concept continuous flotation circuit resulted in fossil resin recovery with the same separation efficiency as was obtained from laboratory bench-scale testing (more than 80% recovery at about 80% concentrate grade); … more
