Édouard Batiste's Symphonie militaire (1845): edition and commentary

Description: Symphonie Militaire is a three movement work for twelve solo wind instruments composed by Édouard Batiste (1820-1876), a professor at the Paris Conservatoire and organist. The composition is scored for flute, two oboes, two B-flat clarinets, two bassoons, E-flat trumpet with valves, two F-horns with valves, trombone, and B-flat ophicleide.

The overtures of Samuel Wesley

Description: Born into one of the most distinguished families in eighteenth-century England, Samuel Wesley (176-1837) distinguished himself as a child prodigy, an ardent devotee of the music of J. S. Bach, and as a composer, performer and music lecturer. His four extant overtures, written from the year 1778 to 1824, offer an insight into his development as a composer. This edition, drawn from the Wesley manuscripts housed in the British Library, is preceded by a commentary dealing with Wesley's life, the history of the overture as an independent for, and with Wesley's place in the history of English instrumental music.

Capriccio: a composition for symphonic orchestra

Description: A body of works titled 'capriccio' have existed for over four hundred years. Most of these works are characterized by a composers abandonment of expected stylistic norms. Guided only by the fanciful whim of the composer, a capriccio exhibits extreme contrasts in the various parameters of a musical composition including melody, harmony, counterpoint, mood and texture. The composition embedded in these compositional parameters as its point of departure and development.

Description: This work in three movements is written for piccolo, flute, alto flute in G, oboe, English horn in F, clarinet in Bb, bass clarinet in Bb, contrabass clarinet in Bb, bassoon, soprano saxophone in Bb, alto saxophine in Bb, horn in F, trumpet in Bb, six percussion, violins, violas, and violoncellos. The approximate duration is thirteen minutes.

Description: Since Jasmine's Secret contains elements of cantata and follows a dramatic story or program, the work may be classified as a narrative or dramatic story or program, the work may be classified as a narrative or dramatic cantata employing five solo voices, narrator and orchestra. This work attempts a revival of these two genres as a combined entity due to the decreased popularity of both cantata and programmatic music in the 20th century.

Te Deum

Description: Te Deum is a single movement work for chorus and orchestra. It employs an ensemble comprising the complement of string, woodwind, and brass instruments typically available in a small symphony orchestra with an expanded percussion section. The choral forces are in proportional relation to the instrumental forces are in proportional relation to the instrumental forces and it is sung in the original Latin. The intended performance time is approximately 18 minutes.

Description: Chronomorphosis is a chamber ensemble piece for flute, clarinet, viola, cello, piano, and percussion. The work, comprising three movements is approximately fourteen minuted in duration. One of the most apparent characteristics of the work is its progression from non-metrical time organization involving aleatoric elements to metrical time organization involving changing meters but no aleatoric elements.

Watership Down

Description: Watership Down is a work for chamber orchestra in four movements, approximately sixteen minutes in duration. The piece is a programmatic work based on the novel Watership Down by Richard Adams; however, the musical action is not intended to be an aural narrative of the story but, rather, is meant to capture the general mood of the four sections of the novel. The work exhibits the influence of several styles of late nineteenth-century and early twentieth-century music with the symphonic poem being the genre it most closely resembles.

Concerto for guitar and chamber orchestra

Description: The Concert for Guitar and Chamber Orchestra, a three-movement work, is appoximately seventeen and one-half minutes in duration. Adhering to the three movement concerto form, the work reflects the influence of several styles of twentieth-century orchestral music. In the first movement, two principal motives, significant throughout the work, are developed in a series of metered and non-metered events. The second movement consists of a set of guitar cadenzas framed by increasingly complex material in the orchestra. The third movement explores an application of the two principal motives in a rondo setting.

The pagination restarts for each collection and for the fables which fall at the end of each section.

Moment variations: for orchestra and choir

Description: Moment Variations is a three-movement composition for chamber orchestra and chamber choir of approximately 21 minutes duration. The basis of this piece is compositional unity through variations technique, where the retained element of the theme is its structure or fixed-structure variations.The fixed-structure is a succession of six musical events, called moments, in the order: I II III II IV V III V VI, where moments II, III, and V are internally repeated and I, IV, and VI occur only once.

Description: The Symphony has been composed using traditional Korean idioms and Western-style four-movement arrangement. The Symphony requires Western instrumental forces. Description: Kami is a two-movement composition for chamber orchestra. It is scored for two flutes; two Bb clarinets; bassoon; two F horns; Bb trumpet; bass trombone; a percussion section consisting of two performers alternating on triangle, suspended cymbal, three toms (low, medium, high), two timpani, and xylophone; piano; harp; and strings. The movements are approximately five and six minutes in duration, respectively, with a total duration of approximately eleven minutes. The title, Kami, is taken from the Japanese word for "god," and is meant to convey a sense of otherworldliness. This piece is intended as a fantasy for chamber orchestra, merging eastern and western musical influences.
