Effects of 4-Chloroglutaranilic Acid on Growth and Development of Sunflower Seedlings

Description: The potential growth-regulating compound 4-chloroglutaranilic acid (CGA) was tested in whole-plant bioassay systems which utilized sunflower seedlings (Helianthus annuus, L.). Test systems included the growth of plants in soil , solid inert (Vermiculite) substrate, and hydroponic (Seed-Pak) pouches.

A Screening of Fungi for Metabolites Inhibitory to the Growth of Bloom-Forming Blue-Green Algae

Description: Since many approaches to dealing with algal blooms are inefficient, expensive, or harmful, it was concluded that a biologically-synthesized chemical agent, specifically inhibitory to pre-bloom algal cells, might prove helpful in controlling algal blooms. Fungi were chosen as the biological entities to investigate for such a chemical.

Description: The primary purpose of this study was to develop the considerations and techniques for the selection, development, and validation of laboratory experience units in general biology for prospective elementary school teachers. The completed laboratory experience unites developed in this study may serve as resources of activities for college instructors who teach general biology to undergraduate majors in elementary education. For purposes of this study the laboratory experience unites were centered about those principles of general biology which an elementary school teacher should understand in order to teach about plants and animals.

An Ecological Survey of the Herpetofauna of Palo Pinto County, Texas

Description: The purpose of this research was to compile a presence list of reptiles and amphibians that occur in Palo Pinto County, Texas, and to investigate the ecological distributions and zoogeographic affinities of these herpetiles. The study area was chosen primarily because of its location in North Central Texas and its rugged topography, which sets it apart from the surrounding area.

Microbial Activity in "Overland Flow" Industrial Waste Treatment

Description: One of the major problems of modern industries concerns the disposal of waste materials without the concomitant pollution of the environment. Several food and wood products industries have solved this problem by using the "overland flow" method of waste treatment. The research described in this paper was undertaken to ascertain the fact that the waste purification occurring on the disposal field is the result of microbial activities in the soil, and to study the transformations taking place.

Studies on Malic Enzyme from Hymenolepis Diminuta

Description: Malic enzyme from the rat tapeworm, Hymenolepis diminuta, has been purified 320-fold to a final specific activity of 29.4. The purification procedure included heat treatment, followed by column chromatography with Sephadex G-20, two phosphocellulose columns, and Sephadex G-200, respectively. The final purified enzyme appeared to be homogeneous on disc gel electrophoresis and G-200 gel filtration.

Capillary Permeability to Narrow-Range Macromolecular Dextrans at Normal and Hypobaric Pressures

Description: In view of its varied concepts and interpretations, and because of the discrepancies produced by the previous utilization of polydispersed dextrans, a study using extremely narrow-range molecular weight dextran fractions was initiated to reevaluate and consolidate some of the aspects of capillary permeability. A portion of the study was performed under decreased barometric pressure in order to clarify further some of the mechanisms involved in particulate transfer across the capillary endothelial membranes. Gel filtration procedures augmented the study as an assessment of the polydispersity effects of the dextrans employed.

Description: It was the purpose of this investigation to isolate and characterize the pigments of Mycobacterium rhodochrous by partition behavior, chromatographic data, and absorption spectra. In addition, it was the purpose to determine whether or not the type of pigments found in M. rhodochrous is typical of those found in other mycobacteria.

A Laboratory Study of the Asiatic Clam (Corbicula fluminea Müller) as Influenced by Substrate, Food Source and Water Type

Description: Growth of Corbicula fluminea was monitored in the laboratory. Three experiments were conducted. Experiment I utilized three substrates and one food type. Experiment II utilized three substrates and two food types. Experiments I and II were conducted to determine if substrate type or food type effected growth. Experiment III used no substrates, one food type and was conducted to determine growth response to different types of water. Clams were maintained in three substrates: sand, gravel and clay. Clams were also maintained without substrate. Growth was monitored by measuring shell length (mm) and recording the weight (mg) of clams over a period of thirty days. At the end of the test period data were evaluated for normality and homogeneity.
