Problems of Transcribing the First Movement of Schubert's Symphony in B Flat Major

Description: The problem for this study is a transcription for band of the first movement of Schubert's Symphony in B-flat Major. In the arrangement of the data, the discussions are presented before the transcription. This procedure was followed in order that the transcription might be readily understood.

Symphonic Piece for Band

Description: Primarily the objective was to compose a piece for concert band in a large form with the ultimate aim of submitting the number for publication for perfromance by a college, or good high school band, with the additional hope this number might eventually be included on a high school band contest list. With the thought of publication in mind, it was necessary to cross-cue certain parts and limit the technical scope of the composition.

Contemporary Music Studies for the Concert Band

Description: The purpose of this thesis is to isolate the techniques presently being used by composers and to define and explain these techniques. The thesis concludes with a series of studies based on these twentieth-century compositional techniques for high school students in the form of warm-up and technique materials. The purpose of this study was to devise a sequence of studies designed to acquaint band members with twentieth-century composition techniques found in contemporary band literature.

Symphony for Band

Description: Symphony for Band is a composition in three movements following a fast, slow, fast tempo scheme; the work is approximately sixteen minutes in duration. The standard band instrumentation is augmented by the addition of C trumpets, flugelhorns, an English horn, and a piano. The timbre of these instruments is explored both in a soloistic manner and in varying instrumental sombinations.

Aesthetic Models and Structural Features in Concerto for Solo Percussion and Concert Band

Description: Concerto for Solo Percussion and Concert Band was commissioned by Staff Sergeant Rone Sparrow, a percussionist with the West Point Military Academy Band. Funding for the project was provided by the Barlow Foundation. The piece was premiered April 13, 2005 in the Eisenhower Hall Theater at West Point, New York.
