Other Terrains

Description: Recording of Jon Christopher Nelson's Other Terrains. This work was created for percussion ensemble and tape. It explores the sonic possibilities of traditional percussion instruments through the use of a barrage of found metallic and glass instruments. The piece was created with the help of an ICMC 98 commission and a University of North Texas Faculty Research Grant.

Flights of Fancy

Description: Recording of Jon Christopher Nelson's Flights of Fancy. This work, for fireworks and tape, was written as the grand finale to the Grand Opening Concert of the Murchison Performing Arts Complex at the University of North Texas and premiered at the event. The piece incorporates a variety of musical excerpts that were performed throughout the concert as well as sample sounds of fireworks. It was premiered simultaneously with a fireworks display.

Superstrings

Description: Recording of Adrian Moore's Superstrings. This work premiered at the SEAMUS "Acousma-Tex Conference" at University of North Texas. The composer dedicates this work to his father. This composition uses natural string sounds from the piano and harpsichord to create new harmonics and musical gestures. The composer relates the title to the scientific theory of matter and intended for this piece to "pulse" with that raw energy.

Ice breaker

Description: Recording of Kevin Jones's Ice breaker. Jones had just traveled from Helsinki to Stockholm by boat across the frozen Baltic Sea, which had been made more difficult due to a strike of icebreaker crews. During the crossing, the magical and mysterious sight of distant plains of ice reflecting the ship's searchlights contrasted strongly with the occasional violent thrusts of the bows ramming into thickly packed ice.
