Effects of shoot X-irradiation on water uptake by single isolated roots of intact onion plants

Description: Using a micro-potometric method, it was found that x-irradiation (400 R-18 Kr) of the shoots of the onion plant Allium cepa will produce an immediate, pronounced (200%) and reversible enhancement of the water uptake by the shielded roots. Unfiltered X-irradiation (1200 R/min., 120 KVP, 5 ma) was delivered at right angles to the shoot.

The intracellular location of carotenoid pigments in the yeast- phase of Wangiella dermatitidis

Description: Carotenoids in W. dermatitids were found to be associated with membranes of lipid globules and/or proteins dispersed in the lipids in the yeast-phase of the organism. The lipid globules increase in size and the pigment concentrations increase with age of the cell. Electron micrographs show these organelles to be surrounded by a single unit membrane. The free carotenoids are extractable with ethyl ether from pigmented fractions of osmotically ruptured protoplasts only after the sample has been treated with acetone, indicating the pigment is non-covalently bound, presumably to a protein.

The utilization in sculpture of ceramic shell piece molds for specific nonexpendable materials

Description: This investigation was concerned with developing a procedure for using nonexpendable pattern materials in ceramic shell piece molds. Literature relating to this study indicated that nonexpendable materials, used in whole ceramic shell molds, had been limited to frozen mercury.

A comparison of attitudes of secondary school teachers and supervisors in Region X, Texas, and Karachi, Pakistan, toward selected supervisory practices

Description: The problem of this study was to determine whether the attitudes toward selected supervisory practices among the teachers and supervisors of Region X, Texas and Karachi, Pakistan, are similar or different according to their sex, age, marital status, educational attainment, and years of experience.

Determination of the complete nucleotide sequence of the xylZ region of the Pseudomonas putida TOL plasmid pDK1, encoding a subunit of the toluate oxidase complex

Description: A 1.57 kb XhoI restriction fragment derived from the TOL plasmid pDKI was subcloned into the E. Coli plasmid pUC19. The complete nucleotide sequence of this XhoI fragment was determined using both the chemical cleavage and chain termination DNA sequencing methods.

Colonial dissociation in Neisseria gonorrhoeae

Description: The studies reported herein indicate that, under the conditions commonly employed for cultivating Neisseria gonorrhoeae, colonial type T1 and T2 cultures of the organism dissociate to type T3 and T4 forms, and that this occurs both among populations of the organism grown in liquid media as well as in individual, well-isolated colonies grown on solid media.

Genetic organization and mRNA expression of enolase genes of Candida albicans

Description: The glycolytic enzyme enolase is an abundant, immunodominant antigen of the fungal pathogen Candida albicans. A C. albicans enolase cDNA was used to study the genetic organization and expression of enolase genes. Experimental results were consistent with a model predicting four enolase genes per diploid genome. Enolase steady state mRNA levels increased during logarithmic growth, but were unaffected by pH, growth form or carbon source.

"Nivritti,"an original dance composition based on selected phases of the ocean and its relationship with the sun and the moon

Description: The problem of this study was to arrange, develop, and stage creatively a complete dance composition in four parts using the ocean as a thematic source. The five specific purposes relating the theme and the choreography were developed and expressed through the medium of modern dance.

An analysis of teachers' incomes and expenditures in ten Texas cities

Description: The immediate purpose of this thesis is to show incomes and current living costs of teachers by geographical areas and to draw justified conclusions based upon statistical data regarding necessary and desirable teachers' salaries. Since the survey made by the Bureau of Business Research, University of Texas, included such widely separated cities as Corpus Christi, Austin, Tyler, El Paso, Lubbock, and Abilene, the different sections of the state are well represented.

Ultrastructure of Azotobacter vinelandii

Description: The purpose of this research was to reveal the morphological and cytological characteristics of Azotobacter vinelandii cells cultured in dialyzed soil medium. Culture samples taken at two, four, eight, sixteen and thirty-two days were prepared and examined with the electron microscope. Comparisons of the morphology of Azotobacter vinelandii grown in dialyzed soil medium with those grown in Burk's nitrogen-free, chemically-defined medium were done.

Ultrastructural characteristics of cultured embryonic mouse olfactory epithelial and bulb cells

Description: This laboratory is involved in physiological and histochemical studies of olfactory tissue grown in cell culture in an attempt to create an in vitro model of the olfactory system. The present study is an in-depth ultrastructural study of the morphology of cultured olfactory cells to determine the extent of similarities and differences between cultured tissues and the intact olfactory system in vivo.
