Benefit-cost framework for analysis of trace element emissions from coal-fired power plants. [103 references]

Description: The major conclusions of this report may be summarized in the following four points: (1) It is probable that atmospheric emissions of trace elements from Southwestern coal-fired power plants will not cause major problems over the next 20 years. But monitoring for trace element build-up (especially mercury, selenium, and arsenic) in the mountains of southern Colorado, Navajo Reservoir, and other local hot spots would be an important and desirable step. (2) It appears that damage from trace eleme… more

Nondestructive Evaluation Techniques for Silicon Carbide Heat-Exchanger Tubes : Second Annual Report, October 1978-September 1979

Description: This report discusses the development of ultrasonic testing, acoustic microscopy, dye-enhanced radiography, holographic interferometry, and infrared scanning techniques for flaw detection in silicon carbide (SiC) heat-exchanger tubing. Both preservice and in-service testing requirements are discussed. An ultrasonic boreside probe and an acoustic microscope stage have been designed for continuous monitoring of SiC tubing. Preliminary results with these acoustic systems are presented. In addition… more

Nondestructive Evaluation Techniques for Silicon Carbide Heat-Exchanger Tubes : Annual Report, October 1977-September 1978

Description: This report discusses the adequacy of several nondestructive evaluation techniques for the detection of flaws in silicon carbide heat-exchanger tubing. Experimental results have been obtained for conventional ultrasonic testing, acoustic microscopy, conventional and dye-enhanced radiography, holographic interferometry, infrared scanning and internal-friction measurements.

Chemistry and structure of coal derived asphaltenes and preasphaltenes. Interim report

Description: It is the objective of this project to isolate the asphaltene and preasphaltene fractions from coal liquids from a number of liquefaction processes. These processes consist of in general: catalytic hydrogenation, staged pyrolysis and solvent refining. The asphaltene fractions may be further separated by both gradient elution through column chromatography, and molecular size distribution through gel permeation chromatography. These coal-derived asphaltene and preashpaltene fractions will then be… more

Chemistry and structure of coal derived asphaltenes and preasphaltenes. Quarterly progress report, October-December 1979

Description: The solvent refined coal liquid from the Pittsburg and Midway Coal Mining Company pilot plant located at Fort Lewis, Washington, has been received and separated reproducibly by the standard solvent fractionation method into three fractions. The coal liquid received is so-called stripper bottom product from SRC-II mode. Table I shows the coal liquefaction reaction conditions and the composition of the products. The 300 cc autoclave system equipped with injection loading, withdrawal systems, and … more

Maine Firewood Study. Final report, 19 September 1977-30 September 1978

Description: The Maine Firewood Study was initiated to assess the demand for wood energy and to determine the effectiveness of market mechanisms in meeting that demand. In addition, the concern for the implications of increased firewood harvesting from small woodlots caused Maine Audubon to sponsor a corps of firewood specialists to assist small woodlot owners. To gauge statewide firewood use a comprehensive telephone survey was conducted during the winter of 1977-1978. The survey revealed high levels of fi… more
