Investigation of horn balances on a 45 degree sweptback horizontal tail surface at high subsonic speeds

Description: A wind-tunnel investigation of horn balances on a 45 degree sweptback, semispan, horizontal tail surface was made to determine the effects of horn size and inboard-edge fairing at a Mach number of 0.30 and to determine the effects of compressibility up to a Mach number of 0.89. Presented are lift, drag, pitching-moment, and hinge-moment data and lift and hinge-moment parameters.

Filter Media Recommendation Review

Description: The original filter recommended by PNNL for the RASA is somewhat difficult to dissolve and has been discontinued by the manufacturer (3M) because the manufacturing process (substrate blown microfiber, or SBMF) has been superceded by a simpler process (scrim-free blown microfiber, or BMF). Several new potential filters have been evaluated by PNNL and by an independent commercial lab. A superior product has been identified which provides higher trapping efficiency, higher air flow, is easier to dissolve, and is thinner, accommodating more filters per RASA roll. This filter is recommended for all ground-based sampling, and with additional mechanical support, it could be useful for airborne sampling, as well.

Transportable Xenon Laboratory (TXL-1) Operations Manual

Description: The Transportable Xenon Laboratory Operations Manual is a guide to set up and shut down TXL, a fully contained laboratory made up of instruments to identify and measure concentrations of the radioactive isotopes of xenon by taking air samples and analyzing them. The TXL is housed in a standard-sized shipping container. TXL can be shipped to and function in any country in the world.

MARS Flight Engineering Status

Description: The Multi-sensor Airborne Radiation Survey Flight Engineering project (MARS FE) has designed a high purity germanium (HPGe) crystal array for conducting a wide range of field measurements. In addition to the HPGe detector system, a platform-specific shock and vibration isolation system and environmental housing have been designed to support demonstration activities in a maritime environment on an Unmanned Surface Vehicle (USV). This report describes the status of the equipment as of the end of FY09.
