Model-based localization for a shallow ocean experiment

Description: In this paper a modern approach was developed to solve the passive localization problem in ocean acoustics using the state-space formulation. It is shown that the inherent structure of the resulting processor consists of a parameter estimator coupled to a nonlinear optimization scheme. The parameter estimator is design using an acoustic propagation model in developing the modern identifier required for localization. The detection and localization of an acoustic source has long been the motivation of early sonar systems. With the advent of quieter and quieter submarines due to new manufacturing technologies and the next proliferation of diesel powered vessels, the need for more sophisticated processing techniques has been apparent for quite some time.

Model-based processing for shallow ocean environments: The broadband problem

Description: Most acoustic sources found is the ocean environmental are spatially complex and broadband. When propagating in a shallow ocean these source characteristics complicate the analysis of received acoustic data considerably. The enhancement of broadband acoustic pressure- field measurements using a vertical array is discussed. Here a model- based approach is developed for a broadband source using a normal- mode propagation model.

Predicted radionuclide release from reactor-related unenclosed solid objects dumped in the Sea of Japan and the Pacific Ocean, east coast of Kamchatka

Description: Between 1978 and 1991 reactor-related solid radioactive waste was dumped by the former Soviet Union as unenclosed objects in the Pacific Ocean, east coast of Kamchatka, and the Sea of Japan. This paper presented estimates for the current (1994) inventory of activation and corrosion products contained in the reactor-related unenclosed solid objects. In addition, simple models derived for prediction of radionuclide release from marine reactors dumped in the Kara Sea are applied to certain of the dumped objects to provide estimates of radionuclide release to the Pacific Ocean, east coast of Kamchatka, and Sea of Japan environments. For the Pacific Ocean, east coast of Kamchatka, total release rates start below 0.01 GBq yr{sup -1} and over 1,000 years, fall to 100 Bq yr{sup -1}. In the Sea of Japan, the total release rate starts just above 1 GBq yr{sup - 1}, dropping off to a level less than 0.1 GBq yr{sup -1}, extending past the year 4,000.

Reactor thrust during boost in a high altitude trajectory

Description: Reactor startup of a submarine based missile must be accomplished during boost., so that at burnout the reactor maximum wall temperature is at or near the design value. Because cooling air must be supplied during this period, there exists the possibility of obtaining some thrust to augment the booster. To find how much reactor thrust might be available, a representative high altitude boost trajectory was selected. This is shown together with an estimated pressure recovery curve for the inlet. It has been assumed that by some appropriate means the flow rate passed by the inlet exactly matches that demanded by the reactor and nozzle. Hot day conditions are assumed. The missile power plant was the Tory II-C reactor with its design point-optimized nozzle throat area of 750 square inches. Nozzle expansion is complete. The reactor maximum wall temperature was assumed to be constant at design (2500 degrees F) from time zero. Thus the thrust computed at any time is the maximum possible within the reactor design temperature limitation, and provides a guide to a desirable startup time. Available thrust and reactor exit conditions were obtained with the digital codes Dash N and Nomac.

Adaptive ocean acoustic processing for a shallow ocean experiment

Description: A model-based approach is developed to solve an adaptive ocean acoustic signal processing problem. Here we investigate the design of model-based identifier (MBID) for a normal-mode model developed from a shallow water ocean experiment and then apply it to a set of experimental data demonstrating the feasibility of this approach. In this problem we show how the processor can be structured to estimate the horizontal wave numbers directly from measured pressure sound speed thereby eliminating the need for synthetic aperture processing or a propagation model solution. Ocean acoustic signal processing has made great strides over the past decade necessitated by the development of quieter submarines and the recent proliferation of diesel powered vessels.

Control rod studies (Tory II-C)

Description: This memorandum outlines the area of interest in connection with the SSBN launch application, on modification of the Tory II-C control rod system; and suggest a plan of development of information. Because of the very limited space for overall missile length, little room is available for control rod motion upstream from the core. Shortening the rod stroke, and the total length occupied by control rod mechanism., becomes very desirable. Changes in the actuator and linkage mechanism will clearly help, and should be investigated. However, this is concerned only with neutronic aspects.

Possible criticality of marine reactors dumped in the Kara Sea

Description: The largest inventory of radioactive materials dumped in the Kara Sea by the former Soviet Union comes from the spent nuclear fuel (SNF) of seven marine reactors. Using corrosion models derived for the International Arctic Seas Assessment Project (IASAP), the possibility of some of the SNF achieving criticality through structural and material changes has been investigated. Although remote, the possibility cannot at this stage be ruled out.

Application of Polynomial and Radial Basis Function Maps to Signal Masking

Description: The objective of this research was to develop and demonstrate a technique for encrypting information by using a masking signal that closely approximates local ambient noise. Signal masking techniques developed to date have used nonlinear differential equations, spread spectrum, and various modulation schemes to encode information. While these techniques can effectively hide a signal, the resulting masks may not appear as ambient noise to an observer. The advantage of the proposed technique over commonly used masking methods is that the transmitted signal will appear as normal background noise, thus greatly reducing the probability of detection and exploitation. A promising near-term application of this technology presents itself in the area of clandestine minefield reconnaissance in shallow water areas. Shallow water mine-counter-mine (SWMCM) activity is essential for minefield avoidance, efficient minefield clearance, and effective selection of transit lanes within minefields. A key technology area for SWMCM is the development of special sonar waveforms with low probability of exploitation/intercept (LPE/LPI) attributes. In addition to LPE/LPI sonar, this technology has the potential to enable significant improvements in underwater acoustic communications. For SWMCM, the chaotic waveform research provides a mechanism for encrypted communications between a submarine (SSN) and an unmanned underwater vehicle (UUV) via an acoustic channel. Acoustic SSN/UUV communications would eliminate the need for a fiberoptic link between the two vessels, thus increasing the robustness of SWMCM. Similar applications may exist in the areas of radar masking and secure communications. The original approach called for the use of polynomial maps to generate a masking signal.
