Full-Scale Demonstration Low-NOx Cell Burner retrofit

Description: The overall objective of the Full-Scale Low-NOx Cell (LNC) Burner Retrofit project is to demonstrate the cost-effective reduction of NOx generated by a large, base-loaded (70% capacity factor or greater), coal-fired utility boiler. Specific objectives include: at least 50% NOx reduction over standard two-nozzle cell burners, without degradation of boiler performance or life; acquire and evaluate emission and boiler performance data before and after the retrofit to determine NOx reduction and im… more

Experimental characterization of initial conditions and spatio-temporal evolution of a small Atwood number Rayleigh-Taylor mixing layer

Description: The initial multi-mode interfacial velocity and density perturbations present at the onset of a small Atwood number, incompressible, miscible, Rayleigh-Taylor instability-driven mixing layer have been quantified using a combination of experimental techniques. The streamwise interfacial and spanwise interfacial perturbations were measured using high-resolution thermocouples and planar laser-induced fluorescence (PLIF), respectively. The initial multi-mode streamwise velocity perturbations at the… more

The 2010 Decennial Census: Background and Issues

Description: The U.S. Constitution--Article 1, Section 2, clause 3, as modified by Section 2 of the Fourteenth Amendment--requires a population census every 10 years, to serve as the basis for reapportioning seats in the House of Representatives. Decennial census data also are used for within-state redistricting and in certain formulas that determine the annual distribution of more than $400 billion dollars in federal and state funds. This report discusses the major innovations that were planned for the 201… more

Number of core samples: Mean concentrations and confidence intervals

Description: This document provides estimates of how well the mean concentration of analytes are known as a function of the number of core samples, composite samples, and replicate analyses. The estimates are based upon core composite data from nine recently sampled single-shell tanks. The results can be used when determining the number of core samples needed to ``characterize`` the waste from similar single-shell tanks. A standard way of expressing uncertainty in the estimate of a mean is with a 95% confid… more

Statistical study of the strength of near-isotropic graphite

Description: More than 2000 tensile and four-point bend tests were made at ambient temperature on specimens from one log of extruded near-isotropic petroleum-coke-based nuclear graphite (Great Lakes Carbon Corporation grade H-451). The mean strengths showed the expected systematic dependence on orientation and location, with axial specimens stronger than radial specimens and material near the edge of the log stronger than material near the centerline. There were additional local fluctuations in strength whi… more

Proceedings: Fourth Workshop on Mining Scientific Datasets

Description: Commercial applications of data mining in areas such as e-commerce, market-basket analysis, text-mining, and web-mining have taken on a central focus in the JCDD community. However, there is a significant amount of innovative data mining work taking place in the context of scientific and engineering applications that is not well represented in the mainstream KDD conferences. For example, scientific data mining techniques are being developed and applied to diverse fields such as remote sensing, … more

Identifying and Exploiting Spatial Regularity in Data Memory References

Description: The growing processor/memory performance gap causes the performance of many codes to be limited by memory accesses. If known to exist in an application, strided memory accesses forming streams can be targeted by optimizations such as prefetching, relocation, remapping, and vector loads. Undetected, they can be a significant source of memory stalls in loops. Existing stream-detection mechanisms either require special hardware, which may not gather statistics for subsequent analysis, or are limit… more

Developing Livestock Facility Type Information from USDA Agricultural Census Data for Use in Epidemiological and Economic Models

Description: The epidemiological and economic modeling of livestock diseases requires knowing the size, location, and operational type of each livestock facility within the US. At the present time, the only national database of livestock facilities that is available to the general public is the USDA's 2002 Agricultural Census data, published by the National Agricultural Statistics Service, herein referred to as the 'NASS data.' The NASS data provides facility data at the county level for various livestock t… more

Wind Climate Analyses for a 61-M Tower in the Southeast

Description: The Savannah River Technology Center's (SRTC) Atmospheric Technologies Group (ATG) has operated nine 61-m tower sites including the Central Climatology (CC) tower which is located near the center of the Savannah River Site (SRS) since 1985. Data from the weather instruments on this tower have provided answers to questions involving risk analyses, dose studies, forecast verifications, and wind/temperature conditions during extreme events and planned tests. Most recently, data from these towers a… more

Statistical Analyses of Scatterplots to Identify Important Factors in Large-Scale Simulations, 2. Robustness of Techniques

Description: Procedures for identifying patterns in scatterplots generated in Monte Carlo sensitivity analyses are described and illustrated. These procedures attempt to detect increasingly complex patterns in scatterplots and involve the identification of (i) linear relationships with correlation coefficients, (ii) monotonic relationships with rank correlation coefficients, (iii) trends in central tendency as defined by means, medians and the Kruskal-Wallis statistic, (iv) trends in variability as defined … more

Numerical Techniques to Evaluate Moments of Dynamic System Response

Description: Probabilistic uncertainty is a phenomenon that occurs to a certain degree in many engineering applications. The effects that this uncertainty has upon a given system response are a matter of some concern. Techniques which provide insight to these effects will be required as modeling and prediction becomes a more vital tool in the engineering design process. The purpose of this paper is to outline a procedure to evaluate uncertainty in dynamic system response exploiting various numerical methods… more

Detection of Coherent Structures in Extreme-Scale Simulations

Description: The analysis of coherent structures is a common problem in many scientific domains ranging from astrophysics to combustion, fusion, and materials science. The data from three-dimensional simulations are analyzed to detect the structures, extract statistics on them, and track them over time to gain insights into the phenomenon being modeled. This analysis is typically done off-line, using data that have been written out by the simulations. However, the move towards extreme scale architectures, w… more
