The Radiation Leakage Survey of the Shield of the Nuclear Ship Savannah

Description: A detailed 4urvey of the radiation from the N.S. Savannah shield was made. The study was accomplished with the reactor at its full power of 69 Mw during a cruise of 2821 miles. The results of the detailed shield survey show that the design dose rate of 0.5 rem/yr for passenger spaces is not exceeded in any region to which passengers have access. ln the area restricted to crew access the design dose rate of 5.0 rem/yr is nowhere exceeded except in a small region on D'' deck in a room to which en… more

Coast Guard Polar Icebreaker Modernization: Background, Issues, and Options for Congress

Description: Coast Guard polar icebreakers perform a variety of missions supporting U.S. interests in polar regions. The Coast Guard's two heavy polar icebreakers - Polar Star and Polar Sea - have exceeded their intended 30-year service lives. Following a decision to design and build one or more new polar icebreakers, the first replacement polar icebreaker might enter service in eight to 10 years, by which time Polar Star and Polar Sea could be more than 40 years old. The issue for Congress is whether to ap… more

Calculation of Effect of Fuel Burnup on Fuel and Poison Distributions and on Flux Distribution in the Marine Reactor

Description: The changes in fuel and poison distributions and the changes in flux shape which accompany the consumption of fuel are studied. The technique employed is a perturbation calculation based on a one-velocity group treatment of the neutrons. The geometry is a spherical core surrounded by an infinite reflector. The programming forms for the IBM-650 which performs the computations using the Wolontis interpretative system are included. Two sample calculations were worked out using the code described a… more

Metals Verification Study for Sinclair and Dyes Inlets,Washington

Description: Sinclair and Dyes Inlets near Bremerton, Washington, are on the State of Washington's 1998 303(d) list of impaired waters because of fecal coliform contamination in marine water, metals in sediment and fish tissue, and organics in sediment and fish tissue. This Metals Verification Study was conducted to address the 303(d) segments that are listed for metal contaminants in marine sediment, because significant cleanup and source control activities have been conducted in the Inlets since the data … more

Scavenging of Particulate Matter in Connection With Nuclear-Powered Ships. Final Scientific Report

Description: The work carried out over a 2 1/2-yr period on the scavenging of radioactive particles which might be released by the reactor system of a nuclear- powered ship is summarized. Two types of dispersions were considered: aerosols and hydrosols. Radioactive aerosols were scavenged by heterogeneous coagulation with solid and liquid aerosols produced within the radioactive aerosol cloud. Liquid or highly hygroscopic particles, which can be classified as solid particles with liquld films on their surfa… more
