B Plant Ion Exchange Feed Line Leak

Description: >One of the objectives of the Waste Management Program is to separate the long-lived heat emitter /aup 137/Cs from the bulk of the high-level Iiquid wastes. This separation is accomplished by the ion exchange process in the 221-B Building. Interim storage of the cesium is in solution as a nitrate. The feed for the B Plant cesinm ion exchange process is pumped from the lag storage tank, 105-C, through a pipeline and several diversion boxes to the 221-B Building. On December 19, 1969, a leak was … more

Strategic storage, superports and salt domes: a synthesis

Description: In the U. S., there is a bill before the Senate that would establish emergency reserves of petroleum to sustain the country for at least 90 days. Storage of such reserves would be costly. If salt domes were leached to provide capacity for stoning petroleum for a 90-day requirement, each facility would be about 8 million dollars, pipelines another 5 million, and the cost of the oil unknown. The arrival of large tankers involves the construction of superports to accommodate them. The proposed Tex… more

Dynamic response of a linear elastic/linear strain-hardening thin ring. [LMFBR type reactors]

Description: In studying the dynamic response of fluid filled cylindrical shells to large internal pressure pulses, it would be advantageous to have a rapid method of computing the final deformed shape of the shell. In treating the dynamic response of liquid metal heat transport system to pressures generated by large sodium/water reactions, determinations of the structural response of various components is only a fraction of the information required to describe the entire event. The problem treated in this … more

Materials selection and corrosion problems

Description: Data tabulated for chemical composition of geothermal waters are presented for four areas of interest in Nevada: Beowawe steam well and Beowawe Hot Spring, Buffalo Valley Hot Springs, Kyle Hot Springs, and Leach Hot Springs. Material recommendations were prepared for the Nevada geothermal well. A detailed field corrosion test program planned for the Nevada test well is included. A progress report is presented for a laboratory research program on velocity effects in corrosion. (MHR)

Sampling a two-phase geothermal brine flow for chemical analysis

Description: An experiment designed primarily to define the problems associated with sampling the two-phase flow in a pipeline of geothermal brine is described. Analyses reported for 26 samples include chemical composition, oxidation potential, pH, density, and total solids. Changes in brine composition as the well operated during a four-week period are evaluated. The apparatus and techniques used for sampling are described and evaluated. (auth)
