Survey of Physical Education in Texas High Schools

Description: The first purpose of this study was to determine whether the physical education programs of Texas high schools met the recommended minimum requirements of the Texas Education Agency in the following areas: 1. Appraisal of fitness 2. Body mechanics 3. Conditioning exercises 4. Gymnastics 5. Weight training (modified for girls) 6. Rhythms 7. Minimum of two team sports 8. Minimum of two individual-dual activities 9. Track and field. The second purpose of this study was to determine whether the small high schools in Texas were meeting the recommended minimum requirements of the Texas Education Agency to the same degree as large Texas schools. The third purpose of this study was to determine whether the boys' physical education program in Texas high schools were meeting the recommended minimum requirements of the Texas Education Agency to the same degree as girls' programs.

An Investigation of the Relationship Between Health Education and Physical Education

Description: The problem in this study was to examine the relationship between health education and physical education as areas of specialization as perceived by selected health and physical educators in five southwestern states. Data for the study were obtained by use of a questionnaire. Surveyed educators consisted of college and university department chairmen, secondary curriculum directors, and secondary instructors. The data were presented in such a manner to indicate opinions of the total group of respondents as well as those of each of the three categories. The findings of the study indicate that health education and physical education are related historically and are substantially related at the current time, and that specialization in teacher preparation and instruction in each area is desirable.

A Study of Physical Education Programs of Negro Elementary Schools of Texas

Description: The study is an evaluation of the physical education programs of ninety-one elementary Negro schools of Texas. The following purposes were established for the study: 1) to obtain information concerning the administration, conduct, and scope of physical education programs in Negro elementary schools of Texas; 2) to evaluate the physical education programs of selected Negro elementary schools of Texas on the basis of criteria such as Texas Education Association and documentary sources; and 3) to make recommendations for future development of the physical education programs in the Negro elementary schools of Texas.

K-12 Education: School-Based Physical Education and Sports Programs

Description: A letter report issued by the Government Accountability Office with an abstract that begins "While the most recent national data show instruction time for PE decreased from 2000 to 2006, officials GAO interviewed stated that school sports opportunities have generally increased in recent years. Specifically, the percentage of schools that offered PE at least 3 days a week decreased from 2000 to 2006, but the percentage of schools that required students in each grade to take some PE increased during the same period. For example, the estimated percentage of schools that required PE in ninth grade increased from 13 percent in 2000 to 55 percent in 2006. Moreover, states, districts, and schools appear to have increased emphasis on the quality of PE programs, such as helping students develop lifelong fitness skills, according to national data and GAO interviews. Data on high school students show that participation in PE varies by grade level but not by gender or across racial groups. In addition, most state, district, and school officials GAO interviewed said opportunities to participate in interscholastic sports have increased, particularly for girls, and that many schools have responded to increased demand by adding new sports teams over the last few years."

Job Satisfaction Among Physical Education Instructors at Teachers Colleges in Thailand

Description: The purpose of this study was to investigate job satisfaction among physical education instructors at Teachers Colleges in Thailand by using the Faculty Job Satisfaction/Dissatisfaction Scale developed by Olin R. Wood, which was translated into the Thai language by Vatthaisong. The investigation was based on the 10 facets of job satisfaction selected from Herzberg's Motivation-Hygiene theory: achievement, growth, interpersonal relations, policy and administration, recognition, responsibility, salary, supervision, the work itself, and working conditions. The questionnaire consisted of 68 items. A 6-point rating scale was used for the 10 facets of job satisfaction. A total of 169 physical education instructors from 36 Teachers Colleges in Thailand, or 86.22% of the population, participated in this study. For this investigation, frequencies, percentages, one-way ANOVA, and the Scheffe method were used for data analysis. Significance was established at the .05 level. From the findings of this study it could be concluded that physical education instructors were satisfied with their jobs. The major sources of satisfaction were ranked as follows: interpersonal relations, the work itself, achievement, recognition, responsibility, working conditions, growth, policy and administration, supervision, and salary. The gender variable did not contribute significantly to job satisfaction, while region, age, level of education, work position, years of teaching experience, and salary level did contribute significantly to job satisfaction. There were no significant differences between the overall job satisfaction (item 68) of the physical education instructors and their demographic classifications. The levels of overall job satisfaction derived from the 10 facets and item 68 were similar. Thus it could be concluded that physical education instructors at Teachers Colleges in Thailand were satisfied with their jobs.
