Selected constituents in the smoke of domestic low tar cigarettes

Description: Thirty-two brands of domestic commercial low tar and nicotine cigarettes were analyzed for their production of tar, nicotine, nitrogen oxides (as nitric oxide), hydrogen cyanide, acrolein, carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide under standard analytical smoking conditions. Results are compared with published data for certain brands.

Description: A block of Pittsburgh seam bituminous coal and a block of Wyodak subbituminous coal were pyrolyzed under reducing gas in support of in situ gasification. Information from previously completed block pyrolysis of bituminous coal under an argon atmosphere show that differences in evolved gas result from differences in heating rates. Hot-ion distribution function in ORMAK, the Oak Ridge Tokamak

Description: A distortion of the Maxwellian ion-energy distribution function in tokamak-produced plasmas may be revealed in the spectral-line radiation. We report experimental evidence that (1) a change in the value of Z/sub eff/, (2) delayed gas injection, (3) neutral beam injection, and (4) liner cleaning procedures can alter the profile of the Balmer-..cap alpha.. (6563 A) line of hydrogen. The distortion is analyzed in terms of an effective toroidal-drift velocity, ion-temperature relation.

Isolation of pathogenic Naegleria from artificially heated waters

Prediction of temperature increases in a salt repository expected from the storage of spent fuel or high-level waste

Health physics aspects of nuclear radiations from deuterium beam injectors

Description: Estimations are made for X-ray generation from the accelerator column of various neutral beam injectors. Preliminary report on the promise of accelerator-driven natural-uranium-fueled light-water-moderated breeding power reactors

Experiments with a lime slurry in a stirred tank for the fixation of carbon-14-contaminated CO/sub 2/ from simulated HTGR fuel reprocessing off-gas

Description: The fixation of CO/sub 2/ with a lime slurry in a stirred tank reactor appears to be feasible. The rate of reaction is fast, and virtually complete removal of CO/sub 2/ can be attained. At a gas residence time of <1 min, the decontamination factor (DF) is >100 in a single stage reactor for CO/sub 2/ concentrations ranging from 5 to 100%.
