Heavy Aggregate Investigation

Description: This report follows a manuscript report made in January 11, 1952, and provides results of a survey that gives corrections as well as suggestions for new and local sources of aggregate material in comparison to the original report. These reports were made in response to a heavy desire of improvement in reactor design and shielding.

Homogeneous Reactor Preliminary Process Design Report

Description: "The following report is meant to serve a two fold purpose. First, it is the quarterly report of the homogeneous reactor project for the Technical Division of Oak Ridge National Laboratory. Secondly, it is a description and general feasibility discussion of a 200-1000 K.W. pilot model, homogeneous reactor."

Design and Operating Experience of the ESADA Vallecitos Experimental Superheat Reactor (EVESR)

Description: Summary: "The various design features significant to superheat are described for the 12-1/2 MW., 960 psig, 1050° F, steam-cooled, low-enriched, annular-fueled, experimental superheat reactor built by the General Electric Company at the Vallecitos Atomic Power Laboratory. Results obtained during the first six months of full-power operation, on the emergency cooling system, core thermal performance, and pressure vessel temperatures are presented and compared with predictions. Operating experience… more

Optimum Design of Catalytic Towers

Description: Abstract: "This paper gives an arithmetic method of computing the number of sections required in a catalytic tower to produce a given enrichment. It also tells how to calculate the enrichment of a tower with a given number of sections. The problem of the most economical design of catalytic towers is solved. Methods are given for determining the temperature, the efficiencies of catalyst beds and strippers, the relative production rate, and the water vapor-hydrogen gas ratio which give the optimu… more

Oak Ridge Static Autoclave Water Decomposition Test

Description: Abstract: "Steady states decomposition product partial pressures of water exposed to an epithermal neutron flux of about 2 x 10-11, at 235F, were 0.4 to 0.65 psi. Recombination studies were made by adding hydrogen and oxygen gases to water under irradiation at different temperature and flux levels. The data show a significant effect of temperature on the rate of pressure drop of the added hydrogen and oxygen. In operating at two flux levels, 1.2 x 10-11 and 2.0 x 10-11, no difference in the rat… more

Experimental Facilities for Schenectady Pile

Description: The following report describes the use of two experimental facilities used to evaluate the Schenectady Pile. The facilities are divided into nuclear physics and chemistry experiments, and testing of pile components and materials under pile conditions. This document discusses the experiments taken place in these facilities to evaluate the pile.

Neutron Economy of Various Converter Reactor Designs

Description: The following report determines how many neutrons are being absorbed in various converter reactor designs, how many neutrons leak from the reactor and the breakdown between fast and thermal leakage. Another interest this paper examines is to determine how many neutrons are absorbed in thorium in the resonance region, at thermal energy, and in the blanket.
