Landing characteristics in waves of three dynamic models of flying boats

Description: Powered models of three different flying boats were landed in oncoming waves of various heights and lengths. The effects of varying the trim at landing, the deceleration after landing, and the size of the waves were determined. Data are presented on the motions and accelerations obtained during landings in rough water.

Tank tests of a 1/8-size dynamic model of the PB2Y-3 airplane with increased power: NACA model 131

Description: Report presenting a study of the installation of 1800-horsepower engines in the PB2Y-3 airplane in place of the current 1200-horsepower engines. Stability and spray tests were made to determine the performance of the model on the water when tested at both the present and projected conditions of gross load and engine power. Results regarding aerodynamic tests and hydrodynamic tests are provided.

Tank Tests of a Flying-Boat Model Equipped With Several Types of Fairing Designed to Reduce the Air Drag of the Main Step

Description: "Tank tests were made of a flying-boat model having various types of fairing with and without ventilation ducts behind the main step to investigate the hydrodynamic characteristics of the model. All the types were designed to reduce significantly the air drag chargeable to the main step. The configuration that combined the best stability with a good aerodynamic form consisted of a shallow step and an adjoining ventilation aperture having an area about 7 percent of the square of the beam" (p. 1). more

Acceleration Measurements During Landings of a 1/5.5-Size Dynamic Model of the Columbia XJL-1 Amphibian in Smooth Water and in Waves: Langley Tank Model 208M, TED No. NACA 2336

Description: A 1/5.5-size powered dynamic model of the Columbia XJL-1 amphibian was landed in Langley tank no. 1 in smooth water and in oncoming waves of heights from 2.1 feet to 6.4 feet (full-size) and lengths from 50 feet to 264 feet (full-size). The motions and the vertical accelerations of the model were continuously recorded. The greatest vertical acceleration measured during the smooth-water landings was 3.1g.

Tank Tests of 1/5.5-Scale Forward Dynamic Model of the Columbia XJL-1 Amphibian - Langley Tank Model 208, TED No. NACA 2336

Description: Tests of a powered dynamic model of the Columbia XJL-1 amphibian were made in Langley tank no.1 to determine the hydrodynamic stability and spray characteristics of the basic hull and to investigate the effects of modifications on these characteristics. Modifications to the forebody chime flare, the step, and the afterbody, and an increase in the angle of incidence of the wing were included in the test program.
