Depleted Uranium Human Health Risk Assessment, Jefferson Proving Ground, Indiana

Description: The risk to human health from fragments of depleted uranium (DU) at Jefferson Proving Ground (JPG) was estimated using two types of ecosystem pathway models. A steady-state, model of the JPG area was developed to examine the effects of DU in soils, water, and vegetation on deer that were hunted and consumed by humans. Description: High level waste tanks 18F and 19F have residual mounds of waste which may require removal before the tanks can be closed. Studies of laser-driven radiative blast waves

Description: We have performed two sets of experiments looking at laser-driven radiating blast waves. In one set of experiments the effect of a drive laser's passage through a background gas on the hydrodynamical evolution of blast waves was examined. It was found that the laser's passage heats a channel in the gas, creating a region where a portion of the blast wave front had an increased velocity, leading to the formation of a bump-like protrusion on the blast wave. Post-Shot Radiation Environment Following Low-Yield Shots Inside the National Ignition Facility

Description: A detailed model of the Target Bay (TB) at the National Ignition Facility (NIF) has been developed to estimate the post-shot radiation environment inside the facility. The model includes large number of structures and diagnostic instruments present inside the TB. Laboratory Simulations of Supernova Shockwave Progagation and ISM Interaction

Description: High Mach number shockwaves were launched in laboratory plasmas to simulate supernova shockwave propagation. The experiments were carried out at inertial fusion facilities using large lasers. Spherical shocks were created by focusing laser pulses onto the tip of a solid pin surrounded by ambient gas. Analysis of Radially Resolved Spectra and Potential for Lasing in Mo Wire Array Z Pinches

Description: Measurements of radially resolved L-shell Mo spectra from wire array pinches on Sandia's Z generator are presented and analyzed using a collisional-radiative model. The spectra indicate large radial gradients in density over the {approx}8-mm-diameter plasma column, but only the emission from the {approx}2 mm central region of the pinch appears to be influenced by opacity. Investigation of the 2p3/2-3d5/2 line emission of Au53+ -- Au69+ for diagnosing high energy density plasmas

Description: Measurements of the L-shell emission of highly charged gold ions were made under controlled laboratory conditions using the SuperEBIT electron beam ion trap, allowing detailed spectral observations of lines from ironlike Au{sup 53+} through neonlike Au{sup 69+}.
