Long-Range Neutron Detection

Description: A neutron detector designed for detecting neutron sources at distances of 50 to 100 m has been constructed and tested. This detector has a large surface area (1 m{sup 2}) to enhance detection efficiency, and it contains a collimator and shielding to achieve direction sensitivity and reduce background. Salt-saturated concrete strength and permeability

Description: Laboratory-scale experiments applicable to the use of salt-saturated concrete as a seal material for a transuranic waste repository have been completed. Nitrogen gas permeability measurements were made using a flexible-wall permeameter, a confining pressure of 1 MPa, and gas pressure gradients ranging from 0.3 MPa to 0.75 MPa. The D0 solenoid NMR magnetometer

Description: A field monitoring system for the 2 Tesla Solenoid of the D0 detector is described. It is comprised of a very small NMR probe cabled to a DSP based signal processing board. Polarization Transfer in the He-4(polarized-e, e-prime polarized-p)H-3 Reaction up to Q{sup 2}=2.6 (GeV/c){sup 2}

Description: We have measured the proton recoil polarization in the {sup 4}He(polarized-e, e-prime, p){sup 3}H reaction at Q{sup 2} = 0.5, 1.0, 1.6, and 2.6 (GeV/c){sup 2}. The measured ratio of polarization transfer coefficients differs from a fully relativistic calculation, favoring the inclusion of a predicted medium modification of the proton form factors based on a quark-meson coupling model. High-purity, isotopically enriched bulk silicon

Description: The synthesis and characterization of dislocation-free, undoped, single crystals of Si enriched in all 3 stable isotopes is reported: {sup 28}Si (99.92%), {sup 29}Si (91.37%), and {sup 30}Si (89.8%). A silane-based process compatible with the relatively small amounts of isotopically enriched precursors that are practically available was used.
