Abortion: Legal Control

Description: The U.S. Supreme Court decisions in Roe v. Wade, 410 U.S. 112 (1973), and Doe v. Bolton, 410 U.S. 179, which held generally that a State could no longer prohibit abortions in the first 6 months of pregnancy, caused several House and Senate members to move for an abortion prohibition effectuated by congressional action. To this end, proposed bills and constitutional amendments have been introduced in both Houses. Rather than having settled the abortion question conclusively, the Supreme Court de… more

Brine disposal

Description: Two issues pervade all of geothermal fluids utilization--the resource and the economics of producing and utilizing it and the effluent and the economics of disposing of it in an environmentally acceptable manner. Clearly, the resource must be available; its availability, however, will not be attractive unless the effluents can be disposed of economically. The purpose of this chapter is to discuss the accumulated evidence concerning disposal alternatives from the standpoint of technology, econom… more

Brown and Root, Inc. report, Appendix A

Description: Bown & Root will define the requirements for commercial electric-power generation, using U.S. Gulf Coast geopressured geothermal fluids as fuel. These commercialization requirements shall then be translated into the data and technology requirements which are either available or which a pilot plant and laboratory (test bed) facility will need to provide. From these considerations will evolve a recommendation with respect to the necessity for a pilot plant and laboratory facility and, if necessit… more

Comparison of Free-Flight Measurements of the Zero-Lift Drag Rise of Six Airplane Configurations and Their Equivalent Bodies of Revolution at Transonic Speeds

Description: "Free-flight drag measurements are presented which show the practicability of duplicating the zero-lift drag rise of many airplane configurations by simple bodies of revolution. The results confirm the transonic area rule for straight wings, and for delta and modified-delta wings with and without nacelles. The results showed that the area rule did not apply to one swept-wing configuration and an explanation is advanced to explain why it does not apply" (p. 1).

Dow Chemical USA Report - Appendix B

Description: The geopressured zone, assuming the presence of natural gas and high water productivity, may be used to produce economical electric power only if the water is at least 375 F or a means of conversion more efficient than flashing is found. The design and costing of a double-flash 25-megawatt plant using water at 325 F gave a capital cost of $678/kwh, a fuel cost of 63?/M Btu and a unit power cost of 46 mills/kwh. The conversion efficiency of the plant, including hydraulic turbine energy from the … more

Drag Measurements at Low Lift of a Four-Nacelle Airplane Configuration Having a Longitudinal Distribution of Cross-Sectional Area Conducive to Low Transonic Drag Rise

Description: Report discussing a flight test of a four-nacelle delta-wing airplane configuration based on the transonic area rule in order to counteract the effects of high pressure drag at transonic and supersonic speeds. The testing verified that the transonic area rule can make designing complex aircraft with low transonic and supersonic pressure drag much easier.

Drag Measurements at Low Lift of a Four-Nacelle Airplane Configuration Having a Longitudinal Distribution of Cross-Sectional Area Conductive to Low Transonic Drag Rise

Description: Memorandum presenting a procedure based on the transonic area rule, which has been used to design a four-nacelle delta-wing airplane configuration. A flight test of a model of the configuration showed a zero-lift transonic drag rise of 0.010 which, when compared with estimates, indicated the absence of adverse interference effects.

Drag Measurements on Equivalent Bodies of Revolution of Six Configurations of the Convair MX-1964 (Originally MX-1626) Proposed Supersonic Bomber

Description: "Tests on equivalent bodies of revolution of six configurations of the Consolidated Vultee Aircraft Corporation proposed supersonic bomber (Convair MX-1964) have indicated that it is possible to reduce the drag of the configuration by designing it to have a favorable area distribution. The method of NACA RM L53I22c to predict the peak pressure drag of a configuration on the basis of its area distribution gave generally good agreement with the subject models" (p. 1).

Effect of Nose Shape and Wing Thickness Ratio on the Drag at Zero Lift of a Missile Having Triangular Wings and Tails

Description: "Free-flight tests have been made to determine the drag at zero lift of several configurations of a missile having triangular wings and tails. Base-pressure measurements were also obtained for some of the configurations. The results show that increasing the wing thickness ratio from 4 to 6 percent increased the wing drag by about 100 percent at M = 1.3 and by about 30 percent at M = 1.8" (p. 1).

Effect of Wing Size and Amount of Indentation on Applicability of Transonic Area Rule to Swept-Wing Configurations

Description: Memorandum presenting a systematic transonic zero-lift drag investigation utilizing a swept-wing configuration with three different ratios of wing to fuselage size utilizing a 6-inch helium gun. The experiments and comparisons with other results indicated that the reduction of pressure drag obtainable from partial indentation is approximately proportional to the amount of indentation employed up to a Mach number of 1.3. Results regarding the basic data, total drag, pressure drag, equivalent bod… more

Effect on Transonic and Supersonic Drag of Fuselage Gloves Designed to Give a Smooth Overall Area Distribution to a Swept-Wing--Body Combination

Description: "A free-flight investigation into the effect of fuselage gloves, or load increases in volume, designed to improve the overall longitudinal area distribution of a swept-wing-body combination revealed that a reduction of about 20 percent in maximum pressure drag was obtained. The drag reduction effected by the use of gloves decreased with increasing Mach number, becoming zero at a Mach number of about 1.35, the limit of the experiments" (p. 1).

A Feasibility Study of the Flare-Cylinder Configuration as a Reentry Body Shape for an Intermediate Range Ballistic Missile

Description: "A study has been made of a flare-cylinder configuration to investigate its feasibility as a reentry body of an intermediate range ballistic missile. Factors considered were heating, weight, stability, and impact velocity. A series of trajectories covering the possible range of weight-drag ratios were computed for simple truncated nose shapes of varying pointedness, and hence varying weight-drag ratios" (p. 1).

Industrial utilization of geopressured geothermal energy

Description: Discussion of the industrial utilization of geopressured geothermal energy is currently limited by the limited knowledge of the resource's distribution. However, the resource assessment activity in the Bureau of Economic Geology, The University of Texas at Austin, has identified a number of fairway or potential resource zones. These zones are located in Kenedy County; in and about Corpus Christi and Nueces Bays in Nueces, San Patricio, and Aransas Counties; in the coastal zones of Matagorda Cou… more
