The Synthesis of Certain Alkyl Alpha-(2-Dialkylam Inoalkoxy)Phenylacetates

Description: This thesis describes the procedures used in preparation of the derivatives of certain alkyl phenylacetates and the necessary intermediate compounds. Compounds resembling the structure of Benadryl were prepared in this study in the hope that at least one might prove to be of value in the fight against allergy.

Self-diffusion of Pb210 and Cl36 in Molten PbCl2-KCl Mixtures in the Region of the Compound 2PbCl2-KCl

Description: The specific goal of the investigation was the measurement, as a function of temperature, of the self-diffusion coefficients of Pb210 and Cl36 in PbCl2-KCl compositions in the region of the first compound, and to calculate from these data the activation energy necessary for the diffusion of these ions.

Nitrogen Derivatives of Naphthoquinone

Description: A series of nitrogen derivatives of 1,4-naphthoquinone, which are structurally similar to the compounds of Hall, has been prepared by this worker. In general, the amido groups are those of the long-chain, fatty acids, and it is believed they will have increased physiological activity. These compounds are to be tested for medicinal activity by Parke-Davis and Company.

The Adsorption of Radioactive Isotopes on Precipitates

Description: This thesis concerns the investigation of radioisotopes as indicators for precipitation reactions. As a precipitate forms in the presence of a radioisotope, adsorption may take place on its surface. If this adsorption changes markedly at the stoichiometric point it will be possible to use this variation as an indicator for the reaction.

Crystalline Polymorphism of Nitrates

Description: The purpose of this study was to investigate the polymorphism of a group of related compounds. Special emphasis was placed upon the temperature at which transitions occurred and a possible correlation of these temperatures with other properties of the compounds.

An Application of the Reformatsky Reaction to the Thiophene Series of Compounds

Description: In view of the increasing importance of thiophene derivatives as chemotherapeutic agents, it was considered of interest to apply the Reformatsky reaction to the synthesis of compounds containing the thiophene nucleus with the thought that these might serve as intermediates for further syntheses.

The Hydrolysis of α-(Benzenesulfonyl)-Acetophenone

Description: In view of the unexpected behavior of α-(benzenesulfonyl)-acetophenone toward hydrolysis and because of the possible physiological importance of its derivatives it was deemed of interest to make a further study of the hydrolysis of this compound. It was decided to study both the acid and basic hydrolysis of this compound. The problem consisted of finding a satisfactory means of analyzing the hydrolysis products, and carrying out the hydrolysis under the different conditions.

Dipole Moments of Diphenyl Compounds with Conjugated Double Bonds

Description: This thesis is a continuation of a study of molecular moments begun by Joseph T. Fielder. In his paper he discussed the theory and the equipment necessary for such a study. It is the purpose of this paper to set forth modifications of his equipment, to present data obtained with this modified equipment, and to interpret this data.
