Dipole Moments of Olefinic Esters

Description: It is the purpose of this thesis to investigate the applicability of the Debye equation to measurements dipole moments of polar compounds in dilute solutions of non-polar solvents more fully than has been done by previous workers at this institution.

Nitrogen Derivatives of Naphthoquinone

Description: A series of nitrogen derivatives of 1,4-naphthoquinone, which are structurally similar to the compounds of Hall, has been prepared by this worker. In general, the amido groups are those of the long-chain, fatty acids, and it is believed they will have increased physiological activity. These compounds are to be tested for medicinal activity by Parke-Davis and Company.

The Adsorption of Radioactive Isotopes on Precipitates

Description: This thesis concerns the investigation of radioisotopes as indicators for precipitation reactions. As a precipitate forms in the presence of a radioisotope, adsorption may take place on its surface. If this adsorption changes markedly at the stoichiometric point it will be possible to use this variation as an indicator for the reaction.

Self-diffusion of Pb210 and Cl36 in Molten PbCl2-KCl Mixtures in the Region of the Compound 2PbCl2-KCl

Description: The specific goal of the investigation was the measurement, as a function of temperature, of the self-diffusion coefficients of Pb210 and Cl36 in PbCl2-KCl compositions in the region of the first compound, and to calculate from these data the activation energy necessary for the diffusion of these ions.

Stereoisomerism of Dimethyl Muconate

Description: The acid which is analogous to the next member of the diphenylpolyenes, 1,4-diphenylbutadiene, is muconic acid. This acid has been chosen to be investigated in an effort to isolate all the stereoisomers of a set containing more than two isomers.

Factors Involved in the Antibiotic Sensitivity of Staphylococcus Aureus

Description: It was the purpose of the present investigation to determine if sensitivity to other antibiotics can likewise be affected by subjecting S. aureus to heparin contact. It is of special interest in this problem to determine whether heparin in some manner affects the combining process of penicillin with the cells of several strains of S. aureus.

The Effect of Repeated Antigen Injections on the C' and C'4 Titers in Guinea Pig Serum

Description: In this study the effects of repeated antigen injections on total complement (C') and C'4 of guinea pig serum were investigated to determine if constant antigenic stimulation would show changes in the C' and C'4 titers. Attempts were also made to correlate any changes with variations in antibody titers during the repeated antigen injections.

The Dropping Gallium Electrode in Fused Salts

Description: This paper is an attempt to appraise the usefulness of the dropping gallium electrode (DGE) in fused LiNO3-KNO3, to compare it with the dropping mercury electrode (DME), and to study the DGE in fused LiCl-KCl.

Some Effects of X-irradiation on the Plasma Corticosterone, Adrenal Weights, and Differential Leukocyte Count in the Rat

Description: The purpose of the present study was twofold: (1) to determine if X-irradiation can be considered a direct stress agent, and if so, to what extent it differs from other stressors; and (2) to further elucidate the role of the adrenal cortex in the radiation syndrome by determining the more immediate responses of this system to X-irradiation.

The Stereochemistry of Diphenylhexatriene

Description: The problem with which this paper is concerned has as its basis one of the most important properties of the conjugated system of double bonds found in some organic molecules, namely, the ability to exhibit stereoisomerism.
