Technology of mirror machines: LLL facilities for magnetic mirror fusion experiments

Description: Significant progress in plasma confinement and temperature has been achieved in the 2XIIB facility at Livermore. These encouraging results, and their theoretical corroboration, have provided a firm basis for the design of a new generation of magnetic mirror experiments, adding support to the mirror concept of a fusion reactor. Two new mirror experiments have been proposed to succeed the currently operating 2XIIB facility. The first of these called TMX (Tandem Mirror Experiment) has been approve… more

High flux isotope reactor. Quarterly report, April--June 1977

Description: Routine reactor operation with four end-of-cycle shutdowns resulted in an on-stream time of 96.6%. The control plates were changed, and the No. 2 drive rod was replaced. Leaks have occurred in two primary heat exchangers, probably as a result of the 100 psi increase in system operating pressure. A brief electrical power outage (less than two seconds) was weathered without a reactor scram occurring--the control system worked as designed to maintain operation. Basic operating data for the quarter… more

Uranium production in thorium/denatured uranium fueled PWRs

Description: Uranium-232 buildup in a thorium/denatured uranium fueled pressurized water reactor, PWR(Th), was studied using a modified version of the spectrum-dependent zero dimensional depletion code, LEOPARD. The generic Combustion Engineering System 80 reactor design was selected as the reactor model for the calculations. Reactors fueled with either enriched natural uranium and self-generated recycled uranium or uranium from a thorium breeder and self-generated recycled uranium were considered. For enri… more

Stresses in reinforced nozzle-cylinder attachments under internal pressure loading analyzed by the finite-element method: a parameter study. [PWR and BWR]

Description: A parameter study was conducted on stresses in reinforced nozzle-to-cylinder attachments under internal pressure loading as analyzed by the finite-element method. Twenty-five models with branch-to-run diameter ratios 0.08 less than or equal to d/D less than or equal to 0.50 and run diameter-to-thickness ratios 10 less than or equal to D/T less than or equal to 100 were investigated. A three-dimensional finite-element program, CORTES-SA, which was developed at the University of California at Ber… more

Critique of the Council on Economic Priorities test ''power plant performance: nuclear and coal capacity factors and economics''

Description: The Council on Economic Priorities (CEP) has assembled capacity factor data on most U.S. nuclear and coal-fired units in operation, performed a regression analysis upon capacity factor as a function of intrinsic unit variables such as size and age, and attempted a comparison of the economics of typical nuclear and coal-fired units using the resultant fitted-capacity factors. The report points out inadequacies in the CEP data base, the lack of predictive value in the results of the regression an… more

Monte Carlo heat conduction using the transport equation approximation

Description: The use of Monte Carlo radiation transport codes to solve heat conduction problems was shown to be applicable to steady state and time dependent multi-media problems. An improved method for treating problems with given surface temperature distributions is presented. The method is also shown to be applicable to coupled nuclear radiation and heat conduction problems.

Standards for digital computers used in non-safety nuclear power plant applications: objectives and limitations

Description: There are currently a number of efforts to develop standards which would apply to digital computers used in nuclear power plants for functions other than those directly involving plant protection (for example, ANS: 4.3.3 Subworking Group in the U.S., IEC 45A/WGA1 Subcommittee in Europe). The impetus for this activity is discussed and generally attributed to the realization that nonsafety systems computers may affect the assumptions used as the design bases for safety systems, the sizable econom… more
