Two-dimensional finite element analysis of a polymer gel drug delivery system

Description: Hydrogels are being investigated as drug delivery mechanisms. Gels can be impregnated with a drug and then stimulated through various means to release it. Having the capability to numerically predict the dynamic behavior of these release process would benefit the design and control of the such a process. In the paper, a finite element analysis is used to simulate the dynamic behavior of an eroding polyelectrolyte gel. The gel is impregnated in a collapsed state. It is then subjected to a higher… more

Characterization of Tumor-Avid Antibody Fragments Genetically Engineered for Mono-Specific Radionuclide Chelation

Description: The successful clinical application of targeted-radiopharmaceuticals depends on the development of molecules that optimize tumor specific radionuclide deposition and minimize non-specific organ irradiation. To this end, this proposal outlines a research effort to identify and evaluate novel antibodies and antibody fragments that bind breast tumors. The tumor-avid antibodies will be investigated for as imaging and therapeutic agents and to gain a better understanding of the pharmacokinetics and … more

Electronic Aroma Detection Technology for Forensic and Law Enforcement Applications

Description: A major problem hindering criminal investigations is the lack of appropriate tools for proper crime scene investigations. Often locating important pieces of evidence means relying on the ability of trained detection canines. Development of analytical technology to uncover and analyze evidence, potentially at the scene, could serve to expedite criminal investigations, searches, and court proceedings. To address this problem, a new technology based on gas sensor arrays was investigated for its ap… more

Monfort dirt lot experiments. Status report

Description: A mobile processing unit is being used to investigate the feasibility of producing fuel gas and an energy-intensive refeed product from dirt feedlot residues by anaerobic fermentation. Results to date have shown that: a stable fermentation can be achieved utilizing aged feedlot pen residue if a sufficient adaptation period is provided. Methane yields of 2.75 ft/sup 3//pound volatile solids fed can be attained at a loading rate of 0.25 pounds volatile solids/ft/sup 3/, 10 day retention time and … more

Drug pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics: Technological considerations

Description: Additionally, the use of PET to examine drug pharmacokinetics and pharmacadynamics and the relationship of these properties to the behavioral, therapeutic and toxic properties of drugs and substances of abuse is emerging as a powerful new scientific tool. The pharmacokinetic properties of a drug, which comprises all of the biological processes which determine the fraction of the drug available, can be measured using the labeled drug itself. For example, the labeled drug can be used to measure t… more

Pharmaceutical Supply Chain Security

Description: This report serves as a primer on pharmaceutical supply chain issues. It (1) describes the chain from manufacturer to patient, including where it is vulnerable; (2) summarizes current federal law, regulation, and FDA policies that Congress and the agency designed to protect the integrity of the final drug product, and indicates where those protections may falter; (3) notes state-level and professional association activities; and (4) discusses areas that Congress, FDA, and industry, health care,… more

Evaluation and analysis of non-intrusive techniques for detecting illicit substances

Description: Argonne National Laboratory (ANL) and the Houston Advanced Research Center (HARC) have been tasked by the Counterdrug Technology Assessment Center of the Office of National Drug Control Policy to conduct evaluations and analyses of technologies for the non-intrusive inspection of containers for illicit substances. These technologies span the range of nuclear, X-ray, and chemical techniques used in nondestructive sample analysis. ANL has performed assessments of nuclear and X-ray inspection conc… more

Systematic, appropriate, and cost-effective application of security technologies in U.S. public schools to reduce crime, violence, and drugs

Description: As problems of violence and crime become more prevalent in our schools (or at least the perception of their prevalence), more and more school districts will elect to use security technologies to control these problems. While the desired change in student and community attitudes will require significant systemic change through intense U.S. social programs, security technologies can greatly augment school staff today by providing services similar to having extra adults present. Technologies such … more

Associated-particle sealed-tube neutron probe for nonintrusive inspection

Description: The development and investigation of a small associated-particle sealed-tube neutron generator (APSTNG) show potential to allow the associated-particle method to be moved out of the laboratory into field applications. Alpha particles associated with 14 MeV neutrons generated from the D-T reaction travel in the opposite direction and are detected inside the sealed tube. Gamma-ray spectra of resulting neutron reactions in the inspected volume encompassed by the alpha- detector solid angle identif… more

Evaluation of few-view reconstruction parameters for illicit substance detection using fast-neutron transmission spectroscopy

Description: We have evaluated the performance of the Maximum Likelihood algebraic reconstruction algorithm for the case of a few projections and for relatively coarse projection and pixel resolution. Ibis evaluation was done using receiver operator curves obtained from the fast neutron transmission spectroscopy system operated in a mode to detect explosives in luggage. The results show that increasing the number of projection angles is more important than increasing the projection resolution, the reconstru… more

Medical Marijuana: Review and Analysis of Federal and State Policies

Description: This report discusses the issue before Congress of whether to continue the federal prosecution of medical marijuana patients and their providers, in accordance with the federal Controlled Substances Act (CSA), or whether to relax federal marijuana prohibition enough to permit the medicinal use of botanical cannabis products when recommended by a physician, especially where permitted under state law.
