A PC-based telemetry system for acquiring and reducing data from multiple PCM streams

Description: The Solar Energy Research Institute's (SERI) Wind Research Program is using Pulse Code Modulation (PCM) telemetry data-acquisition systems to study horizontal-axis wind turbines. Many PCM systems are combined for use in test installations that require accurate measurements from a variety of different locations. SERI has found them ideal for data-acquisition from multiple wind turbines and meteorological towers in wind parks. A major problem has been in providing the capability to quickly c… more

Application of telerobotic control to remote processing of nuclear material

Description: In processing radioactive material there are certain steps which have customarily required operators working at glove box enclosures. This can subject the operators to low level radiation dosages and the risk of accidental contamination, as well as generate significant radioactive waste to accommodate the human interaction. An automated system is being developed to replace the operator at the glove box and thus remove the human from these risks, and minimize waste. Although most of the processi… more

Countermeasures to Urban Heat Islands: A Global View

Description: An important milestone was passed this year when the fraction of the world's population living in cities exceeded 50%. This shift from the countryside to urban areas is certain to continue and, for many, the destination will be large cities. Already there are over 400 cities with populations greater than one million inhabitants and twenty cities with populations greater than ten million inhabitants. With a growing fraction of the population living in an urban environment, the unique aspects of … more

CERTS Microgrid Laboratory Test Bed - PIER Final Project Report

Description: The objective of the CERTS Microgrid Laboratory Test Bed project was to enhance the ease of integrating small energy sources into a microgrid. The project accomplished this objective by developing and demonstrating three advanced techniques, collectively referred to as the CERTS Microgrid concept, that significantly reduce the level of custom field engineering needed to operate microgrids consisting of small generating sources. The techniques comprising the CERTS Microgrid concept are: 1) a met… more

Data report, oceanographic data from moored instrumentation: velocity, temperature, and salinity off Shinnecock, Long Island, in May 1977

Description: Four instrumented moorings were deployed in the near-shore region off Shinnecock, Long Island, in May 1977. Each mooring had four sensor packages at distributed depths recording velocity, conductivity, and temperature over hourly intervals. The information was radioed to Brookhaven National Laboratory. Three moorings performed satisfactorily. Buoy 1 data suffered frequent gaps due to weak transmissions. The average period of operation was 25 days. The data are shown here through statistics, rea… more
