Indicators of energy efficiency: An international comparison

Description: The United States has long been accused of being energy inefficient based on a comparison of energy intensities among the industrialized countries. Energy intensity is commonly measured by computing the ratio of energy use per unit of Gross Domestic Product (GDP). This is not a true measure of efficiency, however, because it does not account for differences in the standard of living, differences in population densities, or other factors. After corrections are made to account for these factors, … more

Survey of foreign maglev systems

Description: Magnetic levitation (maglev) transportation systems represent an innovative technology that promises to provide pollution-free, contact-free, high-speed ground transportation for the twenty-first century. Great interest in maglev systems has been developing in the United States over the past two years under the auspices of the US National Maglev Initiative. The objective of the survey presented in this report is to provide the US maglev community with information on various maglev concepts that… more

Analyses of Grounded and Ungrounded Photovoltaic Power Systems

Description: Photovoltaic (PV) modules and photovoltaic balance of systems equipment are designed, manufactured, and marketed internationally. Each country or group Of countries has a set of electrical safety codes, either in place or evolving, that guide and regulate the design and installation of PV power systems. A basic difference in these codes is that some require hard (low-resistance) grounding (the United States and Canada) and others opt for an essentially ungrounded system (Europe and Japan). The … more

Summary of national and international fuel cycle and radioactive waste management programs, 1984

Description: Worldwide activities related to nuclear fuel cycle and radioactive waste management programs are summarized. Several trends have developed in waste management strategy: All countries having to dispose of reprocessing wastes plan on conversion of the high-level waste (HLW) stream to a borosilicate glass and eventual emplacement of the glass logs, suitably packaged, in a deep geologic repository. Countries that must deal with plutonium-contaminated waste emphasize pluonium recovery, volume reduct… more

Assessment of national systems for obtaining local acceptance of waste management siting and routing activities

Description: There is a rich mixture of formal and informal approaches being used in our sister nuclear democracies in their attempts to deal with the difficulties of obtaining local acceptance for siting of waste management facilities and activities. Some of these are meeting with a degree of success not yet achieved in the US. Although this survey documents and assesses many of these approaches, time did not permit addressing in any detail their relevance to common problems in the US. It would appear the … more

Interim report on studies of uranium, thorium, and lead migration at Key Lake, Saskatchewan, Canada

Description: The redistribution of uranium, thorium, and lead is being examined in samples representing several million cubic meters of sandstone and metamorphased sediments in the Athabasca Basin which is located in the northwest corner of the Canadian province of Saskatchewan. The region of study includes zones of uranium mineralization at Key Lake. Mineralization occurs at the unconformity between the Athabasca sandstone and the underlying metasediments and in fault zones within the metasediments. Lead i… more
