Flux of energy and essential elements through the continental shelf ecosystem. Progress report

Description: There are three distinct but not mutually exclusive areas of research in this contract, studies of intrusions of the west wall of the Gulf Stream onto the outer continental shelf, studies of the flux of materials across nearshore density fronts, and advances in understanding of the planktonic food web of the continental shelf. Studies of frontal events on the outer and inner continental shelf involve distinctive physical and chemical regimes and have proven to require distinctive biological app… more

Shipboard measurements of the cloud-capped marine boundary layer during FIRE/ASTEX. Technical progress report, October 1, 1992--September 30, 1993

Description: ASTEX is a large multi-agency program to investigate all aspects of marine stratus clouds because of their overall importance in regulating the earth`s climate system. The program focused on clouds in the Eastern Atlantic during the month of June, 1992 because of the expected frequency of low clouds in that area. The experiment was based on the islands of Santa Maria in the Azores and Porto Santo about 800 km away in the Madeira Archipelago with large complements of remote sensors operated from… more

Ammonium silicate diagenesis and its influence on the interpretation of fixed-ammonium anomalies as an exploration tool

Description: The study of nitrogen (NH{sub 4}{sup +}) diagenesis associated with hydrocarbon occurrences is intended to aid in predicting favorable areas of petroleum exploration and recovery by establishing a better understanding of the interaction of organic maturation products with clastic sedimentary sequences. This research has indicated that fixed-NH{sub 4} in clays preserves anomalous NH{sub 4}{sup +} abundances, thus recording a significant reaction in the maturation of hydrocarbons which correlates… more
