Energy Star Lighting Verification Program Semi-Annual Report: April-October 2005

Description: The Program for the Evaluation and Analysis of Residential Lighting (PEARL) is a watchdog program. It was created in response to complaints received by utility program managers about the performance of certain Energy Star lighting products being promoted within their service territories and the lack of a self-policing mechanism within the lighting industry that would ensure the reliability of these products and their compliance with ENERGY STAR specifications. To remedy these problems, PEARL pu… more

Realtime Monitoring of Pipelines for Third-Party Contact Semi-Annual Technical Progress Report: Number 4

Description: Third-party contact with pipelines (typically caused by contact with a digging or drilling device) can result in mechanical damage to the pipe, in addition to coating damage that can initiate corrosion. Because this type of damage often goes unreported and can lead to eventual catastrophic failure of the pipe, a reliable, cost-effective method is needed for monitoring and reporting third-party contact events. The impressed alternating cycle current (IACC) pipeline monitoring method consists of … more

CO2 Selective Ceramic Membrane for Water-Gas-Shift Reaction With Concomitant Recovery of CO2, Quarterly Report: January-March 2005

Description: In this quarter, we have focused on the completion of the loose ends of the experimental study. A series of CO{sub 2}-affinity membranes (carbonaceous base) prepared previously were characterized and evaluated for their suitability for the proposed application The CO{sub 2} permeance and selectivity are 0.5 to >3 m{sup 3}/m{sub 2}/hr/bar and 4 to 10 for CO{sub 2} over nitrogen respectively. Based upon its performance dependence on temperature and pore size, we conclude that this type of CO{s… more

Diffusion Coatings for Corrosion-Resistant Components in Coal Gasification Systems Quarterly Technical Progress Report: Number 7

Description: Heat-exchangers, particle filters, turbines, and other components in integrated coal gasification combined cycle system must withstand the highly sulfiding conditions of the high-temperature coal gas over an extended period of time. The performance of components degrades significantly with time unless expensive high alloy materials are used. Deposition of a suitable coating on a low-cost alloy may improve its resistance to such sulfidation attack, and decrease capital and operating costs. The a… more

Use of Coal Drying to Reduce Water Consumed in Pulverized Coal Power Plants Quarterly Report: July-September

Description: Low rank fuels such as subbituminous coals and lignites contain significant amounts of moisture compared to higher rank coals. Typically, the moisture content of subbituminous coals ranges from 15 to 30 percent, while that for lignites is between 25 and 40 percent, where both are expressed on a wet coal basis. High fuel moisture has several adverse impacts on the operation of a pulverized coal generating unit. High fuel moisture results in fuel handling problems, and it affects heat rate, mass … more
