A Study and Evaluation of the Lighting in the Industrial Arts Shops of the Fort Worth Public Schools

Description: There are many factors to be considered when studying the lighting of industrial arts shops. Adequate light is one of the most important factors, and by adequate lighting is meant light that is sufficient in quantity and quality. Other factors to be considered include the location of the shops in the building, the windows, interior painting, width, and length, and the ceiling height of the shoprooms. The study herein is directed toward better lighting in the industrial arts shops for more efficient work.

The Impact of a Mentoring Program on the Self-Esteem of College-Age Women

Description: The fact that girls and women suffer a loss of self-esteem disproportionate to boys and men is without argument. There are an increasing number of books, magazine articles, and resource kits being made available to begin to comprehensively address the issue with young girls. However, less effort is being directed toward the older adolescent, the college-age woman. The problem with which this study was concerned was that of determining the impact of a mentoring program on the self-esteem of college-age women. The Multidimensional Self-Esteem Inventory (MSEI) was administered as a pre- and posttest, to 40 sophomore women, 20 of whom were in a control group and 20 who participated in the structured mentoring program. Using the MSEI, it was possible to gain statistically significant data which indicated that the self-esteem of the women could be positively impacted as a result of the mentoring experience. In addition to the instrument, the participants kept journals about their mentoring experience. Therefore, this research was able to report both qualitative and quantitative findings. The findings regarding the control group were not statistically significant for any of the 11 characteristics on the inventory. The findings from the mentored group however, were determined to be statistically significant for 5 characteristics: global self-esteem, competence, lovability, body appearance, and identity integration. From the statistical findings, as well as, from the journal entries it appeared that mentoring is a valuable experience. Also it was determined that there was a pattern to a positive mentoring experience. The women felt that their mentors were individuals in whom they could place their trust, the women felt the mentors could be helpful to them because of the wisdom that comes from life experience.

Evaluation of the Preparation for Adult Living Training Program for Severely Emotionally Disturbed Adolescents in a Residential Treatment Center

Description: The purpose of this study was to determine the effectiveness of the Preparation for Adult Living skills training program by measuring the learning gains and learning outcomes of students participating in the training. The quasi-experimental posttest control group design was used. A treatment sample of twelve students received the Preparation for Adult Living training. A nontreatment sample was selected by matching the characteristics of educational and reading level and the gender of twelve students with no previous independent living skills training with those of the treatment sample. Students in the treatment sample were tested for learning gains using the Preparation for Adult Living Test. Both the treatment and nontreatment sample were tested using the post-training Preparation for Adult Living Scale to determine the level of their learning outcomes. The Preparation for Adult Living Test results were analyzed using the t-test for correlated samples of pretests and posttests. The t-test for independent samples was used to analyze the Preparation for Adult Living Scale results to determine the students' learning outcomes. A Pearson r correlation coefficient was calculated for Preparation for Adult Living Scale scores to determine if a relationship existed between employment and the life coping skills of the treatment sample. The findings indicated that no learning gains were made during the training, but that the training had an impact on the students' post-training life-coping skills. A strong relationship was found between the specific life-coping and employment skills of the treatment sample. Investigation of the reliability and validity of the Preparation for Adult Living Test and Scale instruments was recommended.

A Comparative Sociometric Ethnological Study

Description: The purpose of this study is to compare sociometric data obtained from Negro and white pupils in fourth, fifth, and sixth grade public school classrooms in Fort Worth, Texas. An attempt will be made to determine, as nearly as possible with the methods available and other limitations of this study, to what degree socialization is affected by racial factors in groups which are comparable in terms of socio-economic status.

Identification of College Freshmen According to Scholastic and Persistence Potential

Description: This study was designed to develop a procedure for the identification of freshman students at risk in the academic and social integration process at Texas Christian University. The data for the study were collected from the Student Information Form (SIF) and student records system at Texas Christian University. The data included demographic, attitudinal, educational background and one-year persistence indicators (retain and drop) as well as one-year cumulative grade point averages for the fall 1990 entering freshman class.

An Analysis of Enrollment Patterns in Required General Education Courses and the Related Success, as Measured by Grade Point Average, of Technical-Occupational Students in a Multi-Campus Urban Community College

Description: This study investigated the following with regard to technical-occupational students in a multi-campus urban community college: The enrollment patterns in required general education courses at specific intervals of course work; the relation between successful completion of certain required general education courses (English and mathematics) and academic success as measured by grade point average; and the profiles or basic characteristics (age, GPA, sex, and high school graduation status) of (a) the student who had completed a specified amount of general education course work and (b) the graduate who had attained a higher grade point average in technical course work than in general education course work. The data was obtained from the academic records of 328 current student, selected by established criteria, and 284 graduates of six technical-occupational programs. The six programs were chosen by pairs to represent white-collar, technical-skilled, and blue-collar oriented occupations. Data on enrollment patterns were analyzed according to percentage in frequency distributions. Differences in mean grade point averages for completers and non-completers of English and mathematics were analyzed using the t-test. Significant variance among the groups representing types of occupations was analyzed using the chi-square test for independence. The Pearson Product Moment test was used to investigate correlations between grade point average and amount of general education work completed. Among the major findings were the following: over 57 per cent of the current students had completed general education requirements at a level proportional to their total program enrollments; current students tended to avoid enrollment in English more than in mathematics; current students who had completed mathematics had a higher mean GPA than those who had not completed mathematics; graduates who completed mathematics during the first half of the program had a higher mean GPA than those who completed mathematics later; a negative correlation was detected between GPA and ...

A Comparison of the Holding Power of the White and Negro Schools in Fort Worth, Texas with an Analysis of the Significant Difference

Description: As a contribution to the general problem of Negro education, this study has undertaken to compare the holding power of the Negro schools and the White schools in Fort Worth, Texas, to determine whether or not there is a significant difference. It is also the purpose of the study to discover and analyze the reasons for the withdrawal and non-attendance of Negro students. A further purpose is to determine whether or not any significant difference has been achieved in the holding power of the Negro schools in the last three years by practices fostered by the Gilmer-Aiken school laws or by recent efforts made to equalize the educational opportunity afforded Negro scholastics with the educational opportunity afforded White scholastics in Fort Worth.

The Relationship between Desired Results and the Marketing Tools Used in Recreation Programming

Description: The purpose of this study was to compare two types of flyers used in the promotion of a recreational special event by a nonprofit agency. Informational and persuasive flyers were developed for an audience participation murder mystery play presented at Carswell Air Force Base near Fort Worth, Texas. Flyers were distributed throughout this military community. Only those individuals interested in attending a theatrical production registered for this program. A pretest and posttest were administered. Data were analyzed using Chi square goodness of fit tests, tests of proportions, and t-tests. Findings were: (a) persuasive flyers were more effective than the informational type in attracting potential patrons to register for an audience participation murder mystery play, (b) persuasive flyers were also more effective in attracting potential patrons to actually attend a murder mystery production, (c) however, persuasive flyers were not more effective in influencing the expectation or satisfaction of the patrons with the murder mystery production, and (d) neither type of flyer attracted patrons with any different demographic profiles who registered for or who attended this murder mystery production. In view of the findings of this study, the following recommendations for further study appear to be warranted: (a) further research on the use of flyers for advertising and marketing of recreational and leisure activities, programs and special events might be beneficial; (b) further research is also needed to validate that persuasive flyers are more effective in enticing the potential patron to register for and attend a recreation activity; and (c) more study is also required to see whether it is possible for flyers to influence patron expectation and satisfaction with a recreational program.

Biological and Toxicological Responses Resulting from Dechlorination of a Major Municipal Wastewater Treatment Plant Discharge to the Trinity River

Description: Federal regulations such as the Clean Water Act (P.L. 92-500), and its amendments, direct the Environment Protection Agency (EPA) to implement programs to control the releases of conventional pollutants and toxics into the waterways of the United States. The EPA began requiring treatment plants to conduct toxicity tests (biomonitoring) of their effluent discharges. To control toxicity caused by chlorination of wastewater discharges, the EPA also began requiring some treatment facilities to dechlorinate their wastewater before discharging. This research was funded by the EPA to document the changes that occurred in the Trinity River from the dechlorination of the effluent from Ft. Worth's Village Creek municipal wastewater treatment plant. The study occurred over a two year period beginning in August 1990. A wide variety of biological field assessments and toxicological assays were used to measure various responses. Seven river stations, covering approximately twenty river miles, and the treatment plant effluent were assessed. Two of the river stations were upstream from the treatment plant and used as reference sites. The remaining five river stations were downstream from the treatment plant, spread out over seventeen river miles. The study evaluated the impact of chlorination prior to dechlorination, which served as a baseline. Responses determined during dechlorination were compared to the baseline data. An overall improvement in species richness and diversity was seen at those river stations which had previously been adversely impacted by chlorine. Aquatic toxicity tests, such as those required to be used by dischargers, were conducted during this study. Periodic toxicity was observed with these tests in the effluent and river samples after dechlorination was initiated. Those tests, along with in situ toxicity assays, proved to be good predictors of biological community responses.

A Study to Determine the Need for Industrial Arts Activities for Enriching the Elementary Curriculum in the Fort Worth Public Schools

Description: Industrial arts has been taught in varying degrees in the elementary schools of Texas for a number of years. In some cases, industrial arts activities have been integrated with other subject matter areas, and in some cases they have been taught as a separate subject. There have been several studies made concerning what the nature and extent of industrial arts activities should be at the elementary level. Research indicates, however, that there has been no study made to determine if industrial arts activities could be used to enrich the elementary curriculum in the Fort Worth Independent School District. The problem of this study is to determine if there is a need for industrial arts activities to enrich the elementary curriculum in the Fort Worth Independent School District, Fort Worth, Texas.

A Study of Safety in the Industrial Plastics Laboratories in the Secondary Schools of the Fort Worth Independent School District

Description: This study was conducted in order to determine what safety practices and procedures were employed in the industrial plastics laboratories in the secondary schools of the Fort Worth Independent School District. Data were obtained from literature in the field of safety education in industrial arts and from an information form mailed to the teachers of industrial plastics in the Fort Worth Independent School District. Hazardous conditions were found to exist in a majority of the laboratories due to a lack of sufficient floor space and work stations and the absence of proper guards on machines, proper storage facilities for flammable liquids, painted danger zones and nonskid surfaces on floors around machines.

A Study of Modern Automotive Tune-Up Equipment Used in Fort Worth, Texas

Description: The problem with which this investigation was concerned was that of determining the use of modern automotive tune-up equipment as used by the automotive garages in the Fort Worth area. The data for this study were provided by fifteen garages of the Fort Worth area. Of the Fort Worth garages using electronic equipment to perform a tune-up, few appear to have the adequate equipment and few appear to make more use of the equipment. In addition, a deficiency seems evident in the use of the electronic computer in performing tune-ups.

Description: This silent film is a compilation of a number of different scenes and appears to be news footage from an unknown news agency. In the first scene a man interviews a family in their kitchen, a small child eats while seated on the counter, and a group of young people are gathered next to what appears to be a police car or ambulance. In the second scene, men and women dressed in western or cowboy attire eat breakfast at an unknown event in Fort Worth. The story includes a close up of bacon frying, an unidentified man on horseback, a man in a police uniform being led into a jail in what appears to be a joke, a parade of men on horseback with a sign for Seymour's White Front Store in the background, and a close up of a man drinking a cup of coffee. In the third scene, the Moslah Shrine Chanters are seen at a train station and boarding a train. In the fourth, a man demonstrates the use of a piece of equipment for another man which appears to be a FCDA CD-V700 radiation survey meter or radiation detector. The fifth and final scene is preceded by a title card which reads, "Jury Rules Girl is 'Neglected'" and contains courtroom footage.

A Study of Safety in the Industrial Arts Programs in the Fort Worth Public Schools, Fort Worth, Texas, Based upon Recommended Safety Standards

Description: The purpose of the study was actually fourfold: first, to study the literature in the field of safety education with special reference to safety education in industrial arts programs concerning the present safety programs and safety standards as compared with those recommended by authorities in the field of safety; second, to visit each of the industrial arts programs and record information concerning the condition of the building and equipment and the use of these facilities; third; to compile the data for interpretation; and fourth, if an analysis of these data indicates a need for revision of the present safety programs, suggestions for improving the programs will be submitted to the supervisor of industrial arts and other administrators of the Fort Worth Public Schools.

Racial Residential Segregation: Tracking Three Decades in a Single City

Description: This study evaluated the relative association of socioeconomic, minority group and housing characteristics of census tracts with the racial composition of residential areas within one southwestern city between 1950 and 1980. The unit of analysis was the census tract; the data were taken from the U.S. Census of Population and Housing 1950-1980 for the Fort Worth, Texas SMSAs. The Index of Dissimilarity compared racial segregation in the Fort Worth urbanized area for blacks with all others (1950-1980) and for Spanish and non-black minorities with all others (1960-1980). The data show little change in the extent of residential segregation over 30 years. The multiple regression showed that the degree of segregation in census tracts became increasingly predictable based on past minority concentration in the same neighborhood. Lagged social status and minority group variables significantly predicted the percent of the population that was black or Spanish in census tracts ten years later. Beta weights for percent black or percent Spanish were always the strongest in each tract regression and largely determined the level of segregation that existed in tracts ten years later. This paper asserts that social status characteristics must approach more equal levels between minority and majority groups before integrated neighborhoods can reasonably be expected. Yet many of these variables are still highly associated with black and Spanish areas. Rising income and improved housing in black census tracts give some basis for believing that in time these variables will narrow sufficiently to give more choice in residential housing.
