Implementing the theories: A fully integrated project control system that`s implemented and works

Description: Using the theories presented in DOE Orders 4700.1, 1332.1A, and Notice 4700.5 as the basis for system design, the Fernald Environmental Restoration Management Corporation (FERMCO) has developed and implemented a Project Control System (PCS) that complies with requirements and provides DOE and FERMCO management with timely performance measurement information. To this extent, the FERMCO PCS probably is similar to the systems of the majority of the contractors in the DOE complex. In fact. this fac… more

The effect of actinide thin films on the electronic structure and reactivity of various elements

Description: This report summarizes the experimental work carried out at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory on the electronic structure and reactivity of uranium thin films on Pd, Pt, Si, graphite, Cu, and Au substrates from 1990 to 1993. The U-Pd system was studied in the most detail because it was the first to be chosen right after the completion of the experimental equipment. We first studied and characterized clean U overlayers and the possible surface reactions between this metal and the substr… more

New perspectives on the cancer risks of trichloroethylene, its metabolites, and chlorination by-products

Description: Scientific developments in the 1990`s have important implications for the assessment of cancer risks posed by exposures to trichloroethylene (TCE). These new developments include: epidemiological studies; experimental studies of TCE carcinogenicity, metabolism and metabolite carcinogenicity; applications of new physiologically based pharmacokinetic (PBPK) models for TCE; and new pharmacodynamic data obtained for TCE and its rhetabolites. Following a review of previous assessments of TCE carcino… more

Development of a modular integrated control architecture for flexible manipulators. Final report

Description: In April 1994, ORNL and SPAR completed the joint development of a manipulator controls architecture for flexible structure controls under a CRADA between the two organizations. The CRADA project entailed design and development of a new architecture based upon the Modular Integrated Control Architecture (MICA) previously developed by ORNL. The new architecture, dubbed MICA-II, uses an object-oriented coding philosophy to provide a highly modular and expandable architecture for robotic manipulato… more

Characterization of ultradispersed aluminum

Description: Samples of ultradispersed Al were received, which were produced by electrically exploding Al wires in argon. These samples comprised very small particles that were not significantly oxidized and that were stable in air. Particle morphology were studied with SE, micropycnometry, and gas adsorption surface area. Composition were determined using various techniques, as were thermal stability and reaction exotherms. The inexplicable reports of an Al-Ar compound and of an exothermic reaction were no… more

A practical approach to portability and performance problems on massively parallel supercomputers

Description: We present an overview of the tactics we have used to achieve a high-level of performance while improving portability for a large-scale molecular dynamics code SPaSM. SPaSM was originally implemented in ANSI C with message passing for the Connection Machine 5 (CM-5). In 1993, SPaSM was selected as one of the winners in the IEEE Gordon Bell Prize competition for sustaining 50 Gflops on the 1024 node CM-5 at Los Alamos National Laboratory. Achieving this performance on the CM-5 required rewriting… more

Operability test procedure [Tank] 241-SY-101 equipment removal system

Description: The 241-SY-101 equipment removal system (ERS) consists of components, equipment, instrumentation and procedures that will provide the means to disconnect, retrieve, contain, load and transport the Mitigation Pump Assembly (MPA) from waste Tank 241-SY-101 to the Central Waste Complex (CWC). The Operability Test Procedure (OTP) will test the interfaces between ERS components and will rehearse the procedure for MPA removal and transportation to the extent they can be mocked-up at the CTF (Cold Tes… more

A Continuous Automated Vault Inventory System (CAVIS) for accountability monitoring of stored nuclear materials

Description: Nearly all facilities that store hazardous (radioactive or non-radioactive) materials must comply with prevailing federal, state, and local laws. These laws usually have components that require periodic physical inspections to insure that all materials remain safely and securely stored. The inspections are generally labor intensive, slow, put personnel at risk, and only find anomalies after they have occurred. The system described in this paper was developed for monitoring stored nuclear materi… more
